3dfx versoion with a voodoo 3 3000
Supreme Cmdr replied to Commander Blake's topic in Battlecruiser 3000AD (Legacy)
WinMe has less support for DOS, than Win9x. Which is why BC3K is not officially supported under that OS. If runs, I'd be very surprised. But, I never tried it and don't intend to. The system requirements for BCM are listed on the products page -

I must have missed that. Thanks Steve! At any rate, I guess he didn't see the entry I made on 12-14-00 in which I added WinME to the list of unsupported operating systems. So, for folks like this, I just, this minute, added its own Q/A entry in the BC3K v2.0x version control file seeing that lumping it in with WIN2K, Linux et al, didn't seem to get the message across the first time. -

quote: please I am not some computernewbie who thinks their cdrom drive is a automatic cupholder We treat every newbie as a complete and total newbie, until proven otherwise. In any case, since you think knowledge of DOS is a qualification for being an expert.... How'd you miss the memory suggestions in the FAQ, since you claim to still have your memory in the shortcut set to AUTO? If the FAQ lists barebones config.sys/autoexec.bat settings, they are there for a reason. Did you use them? Why did you not provide your system specs, including OS used? Did you install the game using the defaults? i.e you didn't install to a folder with longfilenames, did you? quote: I've heard of problems with WinME Apart from the fact that BC3K is not supported under WinME, I didn't see where he said that he was using that OS -
ROTFLMAO!! Nah Steve, you're not as bad as Gallion was, a few weeks ago when we first started. Man, I'd go to sleep dreaming of which cliff I was going to throw him off. Regardless, I don't get pissed you know. What I type just ends up looking that way because I have to be firm in order to remain in full control and to enforced established guidelines. My New Year's wish is to get this frigging game done in end of March so that I can go buy myself an island and migrate. [This message has been edited by Supreme Cmdr (edited 12-29-2000).]

If it still says 2.7, then you didn't patch it properly. Uninstall, re-install, setup sound, patch up to 2.09 properly by reading the FAQ

Yeah, am waiting for this one to start playing in Fort Lauderdale/Miami. I think its February or something.

no worries. I'm immune to pointless personal jabs, after taking them for so long. Anyway, I don't think you should touch the IRQ settings (I didn't tell you to!). Here is what I want you to do. Plan A: Backup your config.sys (or just put a REM in front of the older lines you are replacing) and create one which matches the on the FAQ. Then reboot. Uninstall the game Delete the folder Re-install and accept all defaults Go to Control Panel and get the DOS settings for your sound card. You will need the DMA, IRQ, IO. If you do not have your sound card setup for DOS sound, you need to do so. I think I covered this in the FAQ. Run the Sound Setup program. Do NOT auto-detect your sound card. Manually enter the values you obtained from Control Panel. Then test both digital and MIDI sounds. If the test program does not work, then sounds won't work in BC3K either. Edit the BC3K (3DFX) shortcut and increase the environment. Don't mess with the memory settings. Leave them to auto, since you seem to have a lot of memory. If that doesn't work, check the relevant section in the FAQ. Run the software mode and see if you can save OK. Then run the 3Dfx mode and see if you can do the same. If you can, problem solved. If you can't, then am stumped. We'll have to go to plan B (see below) Plan B: Register in the BCM Beta Test program. You'll have to fork out $15 for the CD-ROM, but you can always hit your wife for a New Year's present.

Thanks guys, I feel better already. Look at me, after pulling 18-hrs days for almost a year, here I am, working on Christmas eve (I just released a new Beta patch about 5 mins ago) when I should be relaxing with my family. *sigh* [This message has been edited by Supreme Cmdr (edited 12-24-2000).]

...there's nothing merry about it.

I can't help you. The game has been out since 1998 and every known issue is covered in the FAQ. There is nothing that I can add. quote: Now I'm putting this game in the bottom drawer of my computer desk to collect dust with the rest of the games we don't play any more. So much for my only Christmas present. Well, the person who gave you a 1998 title for Christmas, must not like you very much am afraid. Computers progress and a myriad of things happen over the years. So, am not in the position to keep trying to figure out how to make a 2+ year old game work on current day machines. If we [all developers] wanted to do that, we won't be doing other products. All I know is that 2.09 was the last patch. This saving problem you are having seems to be a video or memory related program. I checked my logs and problem with saving in any slot but zero, was fixed awhile back and has NOTHING to do with the problem you are currently having. If you disable sound/midi completely in Config and you have the same problem, then its not a sound problem. That should be obvious. If you are having the same problem with running the software or 3Dfx mode, then video is probably not the problem. That should be obvious. The game does not use DirectX - which is why I've been watching in amusement as you waste your time on that venture. Apart from that, the rest of the world is already running DX8. And I noticed that, through all this, you have not bothered to post your config.sys or autoexec.bat contents. All I can tell you is that is if you can save ok in free flight but not in ACM, then its a memory problem. I don't even know what memory settings you have in the shortcut - whether they are the defaults or tweaked according to the FAQ etc. I misplaced my crystal ball awhile back, so I can't find some of the critical info you should be providing. Instead of doing that, you're embarking on time wasting ventures such as checking your DX version - which, in itself, is not even current. Go figure. And one more thing. Just because I read the forums, doesn't mean I have to respond to everything. I'm not on call for anyone - and most especially not for a 1998 game.

echo, why are you sending the CD-ROM back to BMT Micro? Whats wrong with it?

Considering all the money the dot.coms are losing, am not in the least surprised.

Joel, my reluctance to complete the docs is related to lack of interest. I think my scripts were so kick-ass, that people feel that they can't do any better....except of course, my very own Gallion. Recently, in the Beta, I released GBS-II so that Gallion can play around with it and quite possibly help with the creation of tutorial scripts for BCM. If you joined the beta program and start playing around with GBS-II with Gallion, it would motivate me to complete the specs. I just don't want to release something to the public that I cannot support due to lack of time. So far, only a few of my own internal testing crew (Gallion etc), have actually done anything with the original GBS. I suspect that it would only take me a few hours to cleanup the GBS-II docs and remove all the obsolete stuff - but thats a few hours I could be spenting on something worthwhile, such as BCM development. Being a developer, I'm sure that you can appreciate this, I think. ps: I have edited the subject for you. [This message has been edited by Supreme Cmdr (edited 12-22-2000).]

Thanks Mike. Methinks its time for another gallon of coffee. brb

echo, you can sign-up for the Beta test. I'll approve you. Just make sure you user the same username.

Games Domain preview is up.

Sorry, can't help. Everything that I'm aware of is in the FAQ on the forum. This is probably a hardware of operator failure issue. Did you try the memory config tips in the FAQ? [This message has been edited by Supreme Cmdr (edited 12-19-2000).]

Gallion, now you know why I released GBS-II. You're going to be my right-hand testing guinea pig on this one

Nothing to do with the game. Its a problem with your system and the video card. Read the FAQ

LOL!! I guess Wold didn't want to break the news to you. I guess the NDA works. We just ran into this quirk in BCM and I just fixed it in the latest Beta. Never, ever tell your shuttle to tow you or it will deliver you either to the station or to itself. Its called ...the legacy of the ghost ship

quote: The key of what I'm looking for is a place where you don't have to worry about enemies attacking you. Where you could screw up as much as you want with no consequences. In BCM, the moon regions in Jupiter are fairly safe haven. In the final version, I will probably make them totally safe. But then again, you won't have any hostiles to practice against. I have some ideas that am working on right now, and if they pan out, I will just create a mission script that is for training/tutorial use only (like the XC module) and make it accessible from the main menu as Training Academy or somesuch. Since it will be scripted, I can have hostiles, friendlies etc, scripted to do exactly what I want. I think this will be the best thing since, like XC, it will have its own small pocket universe. quote: As I said earlier in my post, personally, I don't mind goofing around with a game to learn it, but my gaming buddies like to ease into things. And I honestly believe that giving new players something to help them learn just the fundamental skills will sell more games. I know I'll be able to sell at least four. Yes, I agree with you. The only problem that I have is time. I don't have much of it left, unfortunately. I've less than 3 months to finish this game and ship it (it has to be out by the end of March) We'll see. Stay tuned.
