LOL! It had to happen. Idaho

A friend of mine once described Myst as a 'Bankers game', a non-game for non-gamers. I agreed with him, of course. Idaho

Heheh, It's beginning to look like our tastes are widely scattered. Thank GOD no one said Myst! Idaho

Hmm, at first didn't think I had any to put here... Then someone mentioned Super Nintendo/Super Famicon, and I realized I have tons of Anime game roms...so... FF7 (PC version! Killer in 3D!) Magic Knight Rayearth (This game's great!) Sailor Moon: Another Story (No, I'm not kidding! One LONG fun game there!) Tenchi Muyo (Only great if you're a fan I think) 3x3 Eyes Mighty Bomb Jack (Stupid, but it was the only game at my parents house for years...) Pirates! That was a real gem! Idaho

Did he say Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast'? Oh well, I can't speak, I said 'Cats'. Idaho

Heheh, I just noticed I didn't add BCM to my list... But then, I'm here, so that should be obvious. Idaho

I have seen a Perscan CTD problem, as well, it seems to be related to just how FAST you enter perscan after being told you have intruders. I've been unable to reproduce reliably, but my reflexes aren't as sharp as some of the younger folk. Idaho

After seeing the 'Favorite movies' post, I became interested in knowing what games everyone likes most. Here are mine: Starflight (OLD! Heard about Starflight 3 coming out soon? See www.starflight3.com) Wolfenstien Wing Commander (1 especially, but all were good) Xwing Doom Descent (all of them!) Descent Freespace 2 Need for Speed 3 SimCity (3000, but all of them were great for their time) MS Flight Simulator 2002 (Actually earlier versions too) Jedi Knight/Mysteries of the Sith Mechwarrior 2, and 3 (and Pirate's Moon Exp for 3) Homeworld The Sims (though I hate myself for liking it) Starfleet Command (Original) Princess Maker 2 (Unusual game, from Japan, made by Gainax, makers of the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion). I could go on, but my list would never end I'm afraid. Idaho

Star Trek: Bridge Commander (Full Version)
Duncan Idaho replied to Scrivener's topic in General Chatter
Gryph, Heheh, that's odd, it ran champion on my old P-233, with both a Voodoo Graphics card, and then later, a Voodoo 3. The fighters were a stretch, I guess, but I don't recall any 'mainstay' races having fighters...(Feds, Klingons, Romulans, Gorn). The other races were added from the Starfleet Battles board game universe. Same for the missiles. Can't say I liked either idea, but, the game still ruled. See you. Idaho -
Star Trek: Bridge Commander (Full Version)
Duncan Idaho replied to Scrivener's topic in General Chatter
Gryphon, Yeah, I know how to allocate power, but I had both exp packs for Xwing, and in the 5 tours total, there were probably 5 real bad missions where even full speed wasn't enough, you arrived with no shields/weapons, (or very little of both). Agreed however, it's a matter of taste. The net effect of Xwing, I liked, Bridge Commander is pretty, but pales beside Xwing's playability...(and every other Lawrence Holland title I've played does, too...Xwing was his best title, and still is, to me). And I'm not big on online gaming, so that made Bridge Commander suck even more to me, since the single player game quite frankly sucked. (Embarrasing, since single player was supposed to have been the total focus of development, since during most of its development they said there wouldn't BE a multiplayer component). Urza, I agree with you there! Especially SFC1, which I still play, and is Trek at it's purest....(if you forget about the missiles, anyway). Idaho -
Heheh, nice lists. Cats (On DVD, and yes, I mean that musical) ST2-The Wrath of Khan ST First Contact 2001: A Space Odyssey Fantastic Voyage (Very cool!) Yellowbeard (Hysterical) Run Silent, Run Deep Silent Running (70's space/ecological movie) Planet of the Apes (Original, not that new one) Alien (surprised no one else put this one...) Idaho

A note to those mentioning having problems loading save games on a system with a Sound Blaster Live! card: I've spent the past month experimenting, and I verify Xierxior's (and a few others) tip for stopping this problem. Go to your start menu, find your Battlecruiser Millenium folder, right click on the Battlecruiser Millenium program icon, and in the box that says Target, add the following to the line: -x0 (that's a zero, not the letter O) When done, it should look something like this: "C:Program Files3000ADBattlecruiser Millenniumbcm.exe" -x0 This disables 3D positional sound, which seems to cause a problem with the SB Live card. (For the record, the game still sounds about the same on my home theater system, so it shouldn't affect how good the game sounds for you). It works for me, and I've had no problems in the past month with saved games locking up on load. Hope this helps you! (SC, hope this isn't wasting space, but since I saw a few mention the problem again this past week, thought I'd post this to help them out). Star Trek: Bridge Commander (Full Version)
Duncan Idaho replied to Scrivener's topic in General Chatter
Menchise, Yeah, all good points, and in fact, I did beat X-wing eventually. But FUN replayability, for me, only came after I hacked up the ships a little bit to make mine a little more capable, and more importantly, FASTER, so I could get where I needed. Problem with a handful, (not all), of the missions in Bridge Commander (and X-wing), basically come into play when you arrive, and follow orders, only to find out later that what you're supposed to do won't allow you to win. In fact, that particular mission I mentioned, chasing the frieghter, you ARE told to intercept the frieghter by your first officer...only by then, it's too LATE to actually manage it. (At least, 4 tries on my part failed to do it, until I 'cheated' and hit intercept the moment I saw the frieghter...). That kind of mission would require a real starship captain to have some ability to exactly see ahead in time to see what's going to happen. No starfleet captain I'm aware of has such impressive abilities. In short, even Picard would have failed that mission. And he wouldn't have gotten a chance to try it again, (you do in Bridge Commander, but that takes away from the realism, I could have won it first time through had you been given time to actually intercept that *%$ frieghter when your #1 says you should). In short, I guess what I'm saying is I prefer it when a mission is actually beatable as presented, without having to replay over and over so you can see how to beat it. Some of the missions in Bridge Commander are like that. Some are not. Actually, I know many people won't see why I don't like this. I guess it's just a matter of taste. I loved X-wing. I didn't love Tie Fighter. I've come to the conclusion, though, that I'd be best off just avoiding any more titles with Mr. Holland's name attached to them. For my own sanity. Before I break something, or hurt myself. I took the game back, and am now quite happy with a copy of Might and Magic 9. There may not be any starships....but...there IS a save feature. And no missions requiring prescience. And there's BCM for my starship fix. (In fact, 1 hour after getting Might and Magic 9 running (nice game, that!), I smiled, nodded in happiness, quit that game, and returned happily to my BCM character). And that's the rest of the story. Idaho P.S. And oh, Bridge Commander doesn't tell you what you did wrong, you just fail...depressing. Worse, your #1 always has some smarta$$ed comment to make at you when you fail. Your #1 in Bridge Commander, and Resnig, belong together. And from what I've seen, they are both just as hated by all. Heheh. [ 04-11-2002, 01:51: Message edited by: Duncan Idaho ] -
Star Trek: Bridge Commander (Full Version)
Duncan Idaho replied to Scrivener's topic in General Chatter
I agree. I just bought Bridge Commander, and am seriously considering taking it back. Mr. Holland's at it again, making games where you must play a mission 10 times trying to figure out just where you have to be just when in order to get to the next mission. And worse, in this day and age, he includes NO save feature! That's nearly criminal in a game like this. He did the same thing in Xwing, and many of his other games. (Though with some creative Hacking, xwing was pretty fun). Mr. Holland seems to equate 'frustration' with 'fun gaming', and it just ain't so. At least, not for me. It's a real shame, the game does have the look and feel of Trek better than most. But the missions leave a LOT to be desired. For example: It took me ages to figure out (in an early mission) that I actually needed to start intercepting a certain frieghter BEFORE my crew tells me we better intercept it. If you don't, you can't possibly catch it in time to keep it from smacking into an asteroid. Bad design, my opinion. Very bad. You must lose at least once learning this. I pulled the game out right away, and went straight back to Battlecruiser. That's a game. That's a LIFE. Bridge Commander is just another pretty face with little else going for it. Idaho -
Heheh, or maybe his keyboard is broken. Or maybe he's trying to use the keypad, not the numbers across the top? All I know is SHIFT+9 and 0 work for me, every time, and always has. Just a thought. Idaho

MS loses to Lindows - Landmark case!!
Duncan Idaho replied to Supreme Cmdr's topic in General Chatter
Oy. Look what you started SC... Tac, you don't have to register windows. You do have to activate it, but that involves a list of your hardware only, there's no personally identifiable information. Nor does it get ANY data off your hard drive. To the guy who mentioned OS/2 as being better, you're right. It was far better than Windows 3.1, (in fact, OS/2 Warp, which had Win3.1 built into it, ran Windows far better than Windows did alone). For the record, ask around, you'd be surprised to know most ATM's still run OS/2. Yes, Gates and Co. left IBM holding the bag on OS/2. But only among MS Snipers have I ever heard MS didn't have legitimate reasons for doing this. Quite honestly, I used OS/2 Warp until 95 came out. I was addicted to Warp. It RULED. Being more brutally honest, Win95 kicked Warps butt when it came to PRACTICAL use. It had software. It had ALL the software. It ran games, (REAL games). Developers wrote for it. Developers rarely wrote games for OS/2. I never saw ONE OS/2 game on a store shelf in the years I used it. Sure, there were shareware games...if you could handle playing YET another version of VGATrek or Qbert. Is Microsoft great? Nope. Is IBM great? Nope. Is Linux great? Nope...(unless you're wanting the best web server around). Keep perspective guys. They all suck in their own very personal ways. Idaho -
Heh, I've seen this 'game pricing' complaint come up a few times over the past year. I don't know what the fuss is about. Where I live, new games have always been about 50$...since 1990 at the very least. Currently, new games are STILL 50$. I buy at EB. I buy at Walmart. I buy wherever I find what I want, and the prices are almost all universally the same. (Save for Sears, which is ALWAYS 10$ higher than anyone else). I've seen no change in new game pricing in at least 12 years. I'm thinking it's actually even longer than that, but I honestly cannot recall what I paid for games pre 1990. (Though I still think even then it was around 50$ for a new release). I'm thinking this: It's a regional thing. Some stores in certain areas may be jacking up prices for who knows what reason...(per capita income perhaps?). Anyone else have any views on this? Idaho

I think you mean 'gene puddle' in Resnig's case. Idaho

Have you tried reinstalling it for ALL users? Only curious because that's the only difference between how you said you set yours up, and how I set mine up. Good luck! Idaho

Any chance of getting my own personal Resnig permanantly assigned to this 'Olympics' thing? Really! I could live without him! Contact me at 00008756N x 00005487E on Varan in the next 12 hours, or drop me a line at SC#[email protected] Idaho
