Pre-emptive Strike (comments)
Charles Lindsey replied to Charles Lindsey's topic in Role Playing Discussions
Leiser Morder, are you still playing the part of Stephanie Hoffman? (I think that was the name) The "new" system engineer. Miss "Headlamps" as Gallion calls her. It's been a while and I had a wild thought. If you still want control of her I will leave her alone. Otherwise fair game. Blades, what's your waiting period? You willing to post on her behalf if necessary? I don't think it will be but.... you never know. Anyway just an idea. It would be a very minor subplot on what Lynx posted on. (I.E. waking up and acting goofy for a while, I had other thoughts but this will work as well. In fact, I could add the goofy part to my original thoughts. ALL is well! Just wondering about things. ) Charles -

There it is Blades. For good or for bad. If I screwed up too much tell me and I'll fix it. So what's next? {G} This thread was meant for general discussion of the RP thread as you outlined. But there it is. Charles/Chavik AKA McKendrick [This message has been edited by Charles Lindsey (edited 09-19-99).] -
Mission: + 21 days 16 hours 00 minutes Narrative: McKendrick laid his terminal down and rubbed his eyes. He was tired after reading pages of technical specs on the shuttles. The files had taken some hunting to find. While not classified they weren't called on much except by the system engineers for repairs, and really only then for extreme diagnostics. Most parts were plug and play and easily identifiable as to which one had gone bad. It was about time for his shift to start anyway. Third shift sucked. It didn't matter that there was no sunlight to go by. His body was firmly locked into Terran Standard. He closed his terminal and thought of the shuttles. They really were quite amazing little machines, he thought. They had hyperjump capability as did most Galcom ships and the speed capacity of an interceptor. Perhaps a little more sluggish in maneuvers but some tweaking ought to take care of that. Not only that but they had the sheer grunt to tow ships many times their size, all while carrying a drone, an ATV, and 500 units of cargo. IC's had weapons but much smaller engines and reactors to go with their lighter mass. He was starting to think along other lines when the commlink beeped. He activated it and heard, "Crewman McKendrick, please report to the shttle launch bay." He pressed the acknowledge button and walked down the corridors wondering what he was to do now. It took several minutes for him to make his way from the personel quarters to the shuttle bay. He passed several interceptor pilots all decked out in flight gear while he was on his way. He started to get a bad feeling about the situation. When he arrived in the shuttle bay he was assigned to shuttle 4 and given instructions to fly to the transport in the system, dock, accept cargo and guests. It sounded easy but he remembered the last time. A preflight inspection showed that both the drone and the ATV were missing giving him full cargo capacity. The launch went smoothly and the interceptors stayed tight on his tail and the others. This time, he thought with a rueful laugh. Not a raider in site and they are covering us like we were the most precious thing in the quadrant. He approached the transport and realized his CVD had been teling him the truth. This thing looked like a cross between a Canlon, a Jenstar, and a Generis. He cruised along the bottom of the hole looking for the docking bay. No telling where it was on this hunk of junk he thought to himself. He finally found it in the aft section that looked most like a Canlon. He was the first one to dock and as he landed he noticed a gaggle of men wearing black uniforms. No rank insignia or anything else for that matter marred the matte black color of the outfits. McKendrick landed the shuttle and set the rear door to open. He then ducked through the bulkhead to the passenger area and at the end of that took the steps down to the cargo bay area. The black clad men had already entered and had tucked a unit into a corner and plugged it into the nuclear reactor outlet on the ceiling. It looked like a dampening unit but he wasn't sure. Now they were maneuvering a rather large object into the cargo bay. Several drones were assisting the antigrav pad. The other shuttles had docked and were taking on passengers through the side entrances. As the piece was loaded a few of the men stayed with it and the rest boarded through the side entrance including a rather large man who looked to be in his late forties. Just before he entered he waved the other shuttles off. "Ok, son, just get us to the Chikuma," he said. McKendrick bristled. He didn't like being called "son" or "boy" by anyone. He had almost gotten courtmartialed over that while still in flight school. The officer who had insulted him had been found guilty instead and reprimanded. But ever after McKendrick took such insults with prudence as was the case with this jerk. McKendrick used the VTOL controls to lift back off the deck of the transport when the shuttle began tilting. "Son! what are you doing? Do you have any idea what you are carrying?!?" yelled the older man. "The load is off balance sir, pretty bad too," replied McKendrick. "Son, that load is perfectly centered in the bay, I watched it myself." McKendrick stood, turned, summoned his best (You don't know what the hell you're talking about but I will respond respectfully because you can kick my ass) voice, and said, "Yes sir, it is centered but it is off balance. Why did you have five drones on one side of it and only three on the other? While inside this transport we are subject to it's Guardran field and as such any inconsistencies in the load will be reflected in Terran Standard gravity. That equipment is off balance. Sir!" The older man gave McKendrick a hard look and said, "Son, just get us out of here in one piece if you can. If not I'll personally rip your head off and puke down your throat." McKendrick sat back down in the shuttle's command chair and balanced the thrust. He lined up with the bay doors and exited the transport. Once clear of the transport he targeted the Chikuma and the flight was uneventful. Once in the Chikuma's shuttle bay however everything changed again. The older man burst out of the shuttle and started barking orders. The men in black started pouring out of the shuttles and searching the bay as if there were intruders aboard. One man stayed behind however holding a nasty looking headset. "Sir, I am sorry to iinform you that this procedure is necessary but if ou will hold still for a moment it is quite painless." "What the hell are you talking about?" asked McKendrick. "I kept the goon's equipment safe and now you want to do a procedure on me? What's is for?" asked McKendrick. The man in black smiled and said, "This will wipe your memory of the proceeding events. It has been set to your arrival in the shuttle bay and you will simply forget all that has happened recently. You will take a nice nap and wonder why you were asked to the shuttle bay." "But, but, I don't even know what you brought along," sputtered McKendrick. "I'm sorry sir, it's the easy way or the hard way, I really don't care which." McKendrick forced himself not to look at the Flight Data Recorder and nodded assent. He sat back down in the command chair and felt the headset being put on his head. One surge of "something" then it was euphoria and he was dreaming. Well, the old "Insanity Loves Company" thread was rather large. And this fits with the titles of the threads. Those are my excuses. Anyway, gimmee time to think Blades. I could hack and slash or tie into to previous stories. I'll put something up soon. Charles/Chavik

quote:so far I have yet to find anything that explained Sygan's Insurgent status. Real life answer: 'Cause Derek put them there. Game answer: extrapolating from the manual where insurgent assets were seized and most members jailed the remainder must have fled to Sygan. Open up bc3kman.pdf and click the history bookmark in the left window. quote:I do have one question, though: will I be ridiculed if I somehow fly in the face of established tales, or is this similar to other fanfic forums where everyone can have their own version of the universe? Don't touch established tales unless invited to join (or you ask to and are then invited). Even then do not alter anything that has passed before. All the large threads here are well thought out and it would upset people greatly if you went digging into them and messing things up. If, however, you wrote your own concise story and just mentioned seeing someone going by I think that would be ok. "Quoting" people's characters to use in your story needs to have permission though. How much of your own version are you talking about? If you make up a character and develop him within the game's perspective using the game's technology that's fine. Some variations on tech are around but don't stray too far or you'll get called on it. As in, no new ships, no weird weapons, etc. Those are the basics. ------------------ Commander Chavik ICV Phoenix "We Shall Arise From The Ashes" Official BC3K Tester

quote:The timeline thread is here: http://www.bc3000ad.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000035.html Hehe, thats a mixture of the manual, the "histories" each of us put on our websites, and the RP. So the Gamm war/Battle at Jupiter was set in August. At the very start of the game as I was assuming. Still lot's of room left to play in. But now I'm babbling. ------------------ Commander Chavik ICV Phoenix "We Shall Arise From The Ashes" Official BC3K Tester

I may be wrong here (I often am) but the Battle of Jupiter never had a set date. It just sort of happened. This goes way, WAY,WAYback. I hope I get it right. When I began looking at the forum Tac already had his "fleet" well in place. This turned into the SDF campaign. This SDF was already going full swing when I started reading much less posting. Then Antii Posted About Orion fleet. It was approved. Somewhere in there T.C. McQueen "defected" to Earthcom. That was approved. Tac started "Wraith" fleet and DeSylva started "ISS". Approved. Then Rattler posted a "Call To Arms" for the Insurgency and started Spectre Fleet. That was so cool. I joined as did others. OK, so then we had two opposing groups of Terrans. Boy did we have some debates. That was e roleplay at the time. You "got into character" and debated the merits of being Galcom or the Insurgency. Was really rather fun if you wanted to try off your debating skills. Now here is the meat of all RP's to date. Alun Tringad was discovered as a spy in the Insurgent orginization. No biggie But I offered to return him to DeSylva. Boy did that ever open the floodgates! It turned the RP forum from a "debate" of opinions into postings of fictional actions. This has spawned and set the tone for all fictional RP actions to date. Bagerius; there is the history (of the site) to date.. The Fictional actions of those first threads were never set into a timeline so far as I know so there is not much use trying to reference them . DeSylva may have put them into the timeline on his ISS site but so far as I have noticed it's not "concrete" on this forum. Heck, play with the game some. The game starts 4/04/3000 and according to the manual War is Imminent. (Sheesh, spelling on that one.) Given the manual I figure with what we have posted the first "Gamm invasion" AKA "Jupiter Conflict" would be one of the first major conflicts between Terrans and the Gamms and it should be fairly soon after the "Start" of the game. My opinions only. Dates may be "set" on DeSlva's site. ------------------ Commander Chavik ICV Phoenix "We Shall Arise From The Ashes" Official BC3K Tester

***SC-2 Flight data recorder. Internal voice recording ON*** ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Damn it. One Question. One frigging question and I could have been escorting this tub instead of piloting it. I aced the simulator. At least I should be on board getting the other's ready. But noooooo. I get assigned to pilot this thing with raider bait. Gotta be bait. Who in their right mind would sell Irirdium? Bad enough we have to requisition it from galcom. Where am I going? (checks FLIGHT PLAN) Damn, what a milk run. [jumps to next system. ] Damn at the raiders. What are they doing here? [Computer] Shields are down What??? Oh shit. This is not good. C'mon shields . Damn shields take forever. DAmn those missile are closing fast. . Afterburn. Bank left , right, yaw. Not an easy thing. Thrust controls are too far away from nav controls. C'mon girl you can do it. Comms: Ic1: incoming missiles request assistance. Damnit where are they? They are supposed to be escorting me and watching my six. Roll, yaw, afterburn. [Computer] Shields are down, damage , damage. I know it you peice of junk! Comms: IC1 : I really need help here guys. Quit screwing around and cover me. So DO something about the damage! Friggin MFS. Radar lock, radar tracking, missile lock. Damned old tub . Can't even take a few good hits. Screw this I'm going home. The HJ was operational thank goodness. I lost the missiles while sliding down the energy well for the Jump anomaly. There it was (?) jumpgate ahead of me by 40 clicks. Damn but the batteries were low. I had used to many manuevers avoiuding those missiles. But she was holding together. She might be a tub but she was sturdy. I shut off comms and the ATV and she actually jumped ahead of the Ic's on the way home. Through the jumpgate. There was the Chimuka . Bringing the tub home. Afterburn. Shit they followed! Gotta be after my "escort" . Fat lot of good you guys did me. I'm going home. [Computer] damage, damage. C;mon shields. Why don't you guys pick on someone your own size? Jumpgate dead ahead. FLASH Chikuma, where'd ya go doll? (More laser hits) DAmn it what is with these guys? If you want my cargo where's your shuttle? Little tub doesn't do too awful bad. Just gotta keep ahead of those missiles. Comms: IC-1, c,mon man. These guys are trying to kill me!. Chikuma, request permission to land. [Computer] Damage, Damage, shields are down. Allright I've had it, Where's those friggin mines go? Yes there they are. Come to poppa. Bingo! gotcha ya slimeball. Oh shit, this other guy is good. Well let's see how ya like playing in the jumkyard. Debris field here I come. Shall we play hide and seek? Here I am. Made ya look. Ouch, asteroid jumped right out in front of ya did it? That'll learn ya. Next! Ouch that hurt. Shields. Full stop. Oh no you don't! Come back here. Afterburn, tractor beam. [Computer] Warning, shields are down. Tell me something I don't know. Gotcha. Too bad your head didn't snap, damn guardran shields. Oh well, lets see how you like the taste of dirt. What's the matter flyboy? No attitude control while in a tractor lock? Can't get a good shot? Missile lock? Naughty, naughty. Firestars all ya got left? This will be easy, those things are stupid. Bye, bye. Another pass? still got some burn do ya. Well it's just a jump to the left. Whoa, singe your feathers back there did it? Well, I'm done playing. eat dirt. Narrative Flight Engineer #13 moved towards a large asteroid with the fighter in tow. The fighter bucked and twisted in the tractor beam but was held fast. As the shuttle lost altitude relative to the asteroid the fighter began scraping the ground. Sparks and plating flew from it in an amazing show of fireworks. A small outcropping finished the job and the fighter exploded. The shuttle's shields began raising as it flew to open space. Flight engineer #13 found the Chikuma once more and switched to an external camera view in time to see it try to rip itself apart. It blazed towards the very debris field he had just left while taking several fighters with it. Narrative off OFF Apparently this guy talks to himself a lot. Hope it fits. I guess I'm McKendrick? This catches this guy up. New "chapter" sounds fine to me. ------------------ Commander Chavik ICV Phoenix "We Shall Arise From The Ashes" Official BC3K Tester

I had three (long) posts I deleted when I decided to go with this. Quit deciding that MP players are anathema to RP. We are all playing the same game. The use of sigs is now defined and has been since the beginning of this thread. Where can they use these sigs? Anywhere someone wants so long as it conforms to the aforementioned guidelines. Name, race/caste,ship name, squad name and other stuff. As Rattler pointed out the use of UCV sigs is allowed. If someone asks questions using a UCV sig so be it. It's cool having a sig. {G} As Ron pointed out the use of MP should not be to bash into a thread and say "I killed you all in MP therefore you are dead". Don't (won't ) work. And DeSylva, You are worried about MP corrupting RP (who did I steal that from? seriously; I got it from someone) I don't think it will from Ron's point. If someone tried that the thread's "owner" should shout them off (politely) or call for a moderator to help. As you say in your first post I think it will be self regulating. A wing of Tie fighters will not defeat your BC. That person would be laughed off the forum. But would Commander T'ar Gammulan/Raider UCV Slathri "Tie fighter squadron" Be able to do this? If he writes well enough. Those are my points as fine as they are. Thanks Derek for the insight into the MP game . This should really be interesting. Commander Chavik ICV Phoenix "I've been looking through a microscope."

Whenever I get knocked off after making a long post ( which I always think was a good one) I think someone is looking out for me. Suggestions? Play catch-up as director and let her rip. Talk killed the last big RP thread that was attempted. Charles

Looks like we are circling the same peice of wood, we just haven't nailed it yet. Charles
-
Chris, Did you want it explained better? Is that what I'm reading in that post? I'm sorry I didn't understand. If we are down to how we are using a sig and where I think we are doing grand! Chris, if you are playing on a multiplay server you can be anything you want. You must use those game races and castes that are allowed. That will be obvious I think by simple click choices on what you want to be. If you get into a good squadron or a persistent squadron then want to choose a sig to use on the forum you would use the Commander (your commander's name) Race/caste (of those allowed) UCV (ship name) (squad) (quote or motto) style of a signature. If you are already in a fleet you would most likely want to use that signature. I know I will. But whatever you do be consistent. That would be important I think to be taken seriously. Above all SC was asking if this was fair to all sides. Does it seem fair to you? ------------------ Commander Chavik ICV Phoenix "We Shall Arise From The Ashes" Official BC3K Tester [This message has been edited by Charles Lindsey (edited 08-16-99).]
-
That was probably me from the example in my above post. I didn't qualify whether it should be a "multiplay only sig" or a possible "forum sig" because I am rather fuzzy on that myself. I think Ron is absolutely right in that they should not mix. Mech has been using it per Derek's instructions. Waiting for the go-ahead does seem to be the best course of action though. ------------------ Commander Chavik ICV Phoenix "We Shall Arise From The Ashes" Official BC3K Tester

SpacePhish; Points 1,2,and 3 were already answered in Derek's post above I believe. Point 4 would be up to each player in MP and how they react to you. #5 I think would be the same as it is now. If I were a Galcom player and wanted to make some bucks on illegal items I would make darn sure I would dock with a station that allowed them. All of this is part of the roleplay aspect of multiplay and it's up to you to decide how to do it. This is about the Squadrons themselves. Did DeSylva's and Derek's posts seem fair to you? They did to me. To use Derek's example I think you would sign as Commander Spacephish Terran/Raider UCV Cap of Delight (Squad name) (Squad motto or quote) I am in total agrrement with DeSylva's suggestion and Derek's additions. I have long wondered exactly how, when (and If) other fleets were allowed exactly how the gammulans were going to post a designation. GCV? NO; that's Galcom. GaCV? Dorky. Posting Race/caste is excellent for those that are not readily reconized by GCV, ICV, and ECV designations. One small thing. If I just wanted to get on a server and go crazy I should be able to make "Squad dipstick" and play. For instance If no other insurgents were online and I just had to have my fix. It wasn't mentioned so there it is. I'm positive it's available but I don't want anyone thinking I'm advocating "You have to stay in the same squad" sort of thing. This falls right inline with the nonregulatory points mentioned above for the servers. It all seems extremely fair to me. Lynx, I have no doubt you are historically correct. But I do not think that a mercenary must be government sanctioned. Something in that just goes against what "I think" everyone thinks a merc is. Basically a gun for hire. NOT just any gun for hire though. A gun for hire with loyalty for the duration of the contract as you stated but not necessarily principles. No matter how small a group you have if they hire for anything (protection, first strike, etc.) and remain loyal to the contract they would be mercs would they not? Raiders are thieves. Pure and simple. That point I don't think is being disputed. Lets say we are best friends and we both have BC3020. We decide to join the server and play against others. We whup their rearends. Not wanting to model in-game comms (since I don't know how they will be) lets then say we get an email saying "Geez, you guys were good, who are you?". Well, feeling awfully proud of ourselves we respond "we are the Baldheaded, Bearded, Bobba Fetts (SP?)" Are we then part of the game universe? Absolutely not. No way no how. But we can still be an offserver (offline makes it sound like you are playing singleplayer) group of friends who have a nickname. That is what I believe all that Mech wanted. A group of people who choose to play together on whichever server they get to. There will not be any official bearing to the game but nothing is stopping them from nicking themselves the "Baldheaded, Bearded, Bobba Fetts". That I think can not be stopped. Discussion only and no hard feelings Lynx. I am not trying to inject anything into the game. But I think Mech only wanted an off server nick. Edit in: Comment on nick sounded trite. An offserver nick, a group of friends who enjoy playing the game together and can learn from each other (per Mech's post on newbies) is what I think he wanted. Nothing official. Just a group of friends. That's how I see it. DeSylva got it with his "clan" thing. Mech denied "clan" so perhaps an "official" unofficial *G* moniker for groups of friends is warranted. Squad Chavik, We gonna get ya. Commander Chavik "you know the rest." [This message has been edited by Charles Lindsey (edited 08-05-99).]

DeSylva, you have missed something. Derek has allowed UCV as "Undesignated Command Vessel" . Can't remember the thread now but a search on "undesignated" should yield results. It IS there. So far as I know the race/caste is intact just the affiliation is different or loner as it were. Mechwarrior has started something unique to the BC universe that will come in handy in 3020 and Multiplay. Personally I like it. Will I join it? Probably not . What more could you ask for? *G* I'll hunt the thread tomorrow.. It's late here. Sebastian, I'm not all that well rounded in my reading. I am ignorant of any referrence to "Stabat Mater". Is it historical as Gallion's "Graf Spee"? See the discussion on the thread on the old forum above. I was cruising that thread figuring Mythology woud play a fairly large role in naming ships and even seeing a couple of examples(I think, it was a long time ago. ) But I noticed there was no Phoenix. The X-Men cartoon had recently run the Phoenix episodes so I snagged it. Then something else clicked and I watched my computer boot up and lo and behold I have a Phoenix Bios also. Then I went searching for a gif. Couldn't find one I liked until I went to a message board dealing with gifs. Dragon gifs in particular(thinking mythology again). I mailed the author of that page and asked where I could find one. He modified one of his and gave me permission to use it. Amazing what you can get if you ask nicely. I animated it myself with Microsoft GIF Animator ( I think, snagged several to try) and the end result is the one seen on my Insurgent page. Doubt mine is all that weird but you did ask. I sure on the old forum the thread was titled "Register your ship". I think Tac started that old thread. Not real sure about that. But it was the old forum. Though I tend to play with the final quote a good bit to fit whatever I'm posting about my ship's motto is "We Shall Arise From the Ashes" I rather like it. Experiment: a new RPG like "The Apocalipse"
Charles Lindsey replied to twobombs's topic in Role Playing Discussions
RL=Real Life RP=Roleplay Last thoughts; the last RP had a RL basis for it's beginning. Tringad (RL and aka William Ramsay) was discovered as a spy.Chavik's (RP) attempt to reurn Tringad (RP) to DeSylva (RP) started the whole thing. It went great from there as Ron said. I really had no idea when I (RL) decided that I (RP) should return Tringad (RP) that the thing would get that huge. It was a blast. Here we seemingly have nothing to crank it up. Polaris is the theatre correct? and the Gamms are the enemy (well they always are but I meant the current one in this )? Heck that's enough if someone gets brave enough to post. Everyone has expressed interest and would jump right in I think. *G* Hopefully no one will DIE in the email RP. So long as the commander survives ships can be re-christened. The current email RP is going to to take a while. So crank it up IMHO. And this thread is taking rather long to load. I usually don't complain but there is lot's of text here. (tip to AOL users, try a 56K access phone number, seems to help a little even if you only have a 28.8) -
Welcome back Sebastian. Glad to see you again. Not only am I wondering how you are going to do this I'm wondering what the heck you are doing. Don't answer. Just keep posting. All will be revealed in time. Welcome back. Charles

Here comes a wrench. *G*. If I remember correctly playing the game as insurgent still leaves Polaris stations as neutral. One of the few, seems EVERYONE is our enemies. Insurgents just may want to help defend or better yet check up on why in the heck Galcom is congregating around Polaris. -
