[RP] Sev stood and walked to the podium after FIREHAIL had sat down. He looked out at the assembled crowd, and paused, searching for something to say. Finally, he began. "The events leading up to destruction of that interceptor, that day above Mercury, are a matter of record. I'm sure that everyone here knows the acts of heroism that these two pilots accomplished before their deaths. But the events that occurred immediately after that fighter's destruction have overshadowed an important distinction that should be brought to light." Sev paused, and took a sip of water. It was hard to keep the ghost images of that day out of his mind's eye, and say what needed to be said. A quick glance at his senior officers told him that they were reliving those moments, as well. Sev refocused his thoughts, and continued. "It has been the tradition of naval warfare, since time immemorial, to acknowledge the ship that fired the last volley of a war. For it was with the firing of those final volley, that peace began. Those vessels, more than diplomats or treaties, mark the end of a conflict. The interceptor under Deadboy's command was the last GalCom vessel to fire a shot in anger during the Vesperon Conflict. I have checked the flight-recordings of all vessels which might claim that title, and their is little doubt. Those final shots, which like the first shots of the conflict, were fired at targets within my ship, ended the war. So although Deadboy and Cavalry were killed in wartime, they died in peacetime. Rico! Welcome back. I was feeling bad that I hadn't got back to you, and was going to do it after I posted here. No need now, I guess. Cmdr Williams, good job in Rico's absence. Now that he's back, he'll take over 1st squadron command. 2 ship elements: Squadron Commanders can subdivide their squadron as you see fit. I just hand out the orders. I think that one 4-ship squadron can effectively patrol at most 2 regions, depending on the number of jump points. As such, you'll probably want to subdivide the squadron into elements. Newsletter: Web-based it is. I'll start putting one together for release around April 1, unless someone else wants the job. Blockades: In Bc3k, if you prevent trading vessels from reaching a station, that station becomes weaker (less armour/shields). Ok, I'm back. I apologize for my absence; it's been one hell of a week. News: The chat on March 11 went extremely well. If there was a chat today (18th) could someone send me a quick note on what was said? (omitting the bad-mouthing of your wing commander, of course ) Cmdr Williams has brought up the idea of a bi-weekly newsletter to keep people up to date. I like the idea, and would like some discussion on the matter. Should it be E-mail? Web-based? I can do either. Does anyone want the job? What should it include? Post your comments here. While playing FreeSpace 2, I noted a squadron name style that I rather liked. Which would you prefer as a style? 1st Squadron (the Black Death) or The 1st "Black Death" Squadron Finally, there are several commanders who have not yet reported in. They are officially listed as members of 1st squadron. They are: Cmdr Paul Slade, GCV-Defender Cmdr Jason 'Papi' Cloud, GCV-Silver Lining Cmdr Hugo Pinheiro, GCV-Ajax These commanders are hereby transferred to 2nd Squadron (Inactive). Time to make an entrance. [RP] It began in the docking bay of the greatest of Galactic Command's space stations. Here and there, a stern faced soldier was seen. Some were injured, some were not, but all wore a crisp dress uniform. They began to gather in the vast open spaces of the docking bay, under the shadows of the great Battlecruisers on which they served. They didn't speak to each other. All which needed to be said passed between them when their eyes met. As their numbers grew, an open space grew with them, as people saw the stern faced soldiers and gave them a wide berth. Finally, two officers and a marine sergeant approached the group. Without a word the soldiers fell into ranks, four abreast. As they stood there in the shadows of the Battlecruisers, the reason for the gathering at last became apparent. On the arm of every one of them was a black armband. As the formation began to move forward, the way cleared before them. As they wound their way through the corridors of the great station, no word was spoken. Yet not one of them mistepped or failed to turn at a specific junction. It was as if they had the route memorized. The formation made their way to the eighth deck of the great station, and marched across the plush carpets of the reception area. As they approached a large function hall, a gathering could be heard. When the head of formation reached the doors of the hall, they opened, revealing a richly decorated hall filled with people. The formation stepped forward into the hall, and silence fell. When the entire formation had entered the hall, it stopped. For five heartbeats, the sternfaced soldiers were still, and then as one they came to attention and saluted the two pictures mounted on the wall. Cmdr. Sev Badgerius, at the head of the formation, looked at the two pictures, searching his mind for something apt, and meaningful to say. Only one thing came to mind, and so he said it: "Thank you. You saved us." Upon hearing her Commander's words, Lt. Commander Alison O'Neil turned sharply on her heel to face the formation. "Honour March....Dismissed." [RP OFF] ------------------ Commander S. Oops! I've been so caught up with Gamma Wing duties, I almost missed this! [RP] Sev looked once more at the words on the screen. The two names burned their way into his mind, and memory rose unbidden to the surface of his mind. The bridge of the the Diligence: blackened and burned, a gaping hole where the viewscreen should be. Vesperon marines pouring through that hole. The helmsman, only a kid, laying dead on the deck. The bodies of others, trusted officers all, crumpled on the deck. Sev, O'Neil, and Sgt. Peterson returning fire desparately from behind the maptable as the Diligence drifts towards Mercury. Fading hope, the thought of retreat. And from beyond the hull breach, a single, miraculous fighter. Blackened and venting, it lays down a deadly accurate stream of laser fire, cutting down the Vesperons where they stand. Cheering and waving, as the fighter pulls up and does a victory roll. And then a single bolt of energy from an undamaged Vesperon carrier. An explosion, and heroes die. Sev opened his eyes, and a look of determination crossed his features. Sev quickly sent 56 priority messages, one for each of the surviving crewmembers of the GCV-Diligence. Then he sent one more, to the commanding officer of the two pilots that had saved his life, and the life of his crew, and his ship, that day at Mercury. "We'll be there, Ben. All of us." Today at 1800 GMT, Gamma Wing held its first get-together in the Galcom World of Active Worlds. In attendance were myself, Cmdr. Rico Jansen, and Cmdr. Remo Williams. A good turnout for the first meeting! Other than to talk and have a good time, the purpose of the get-together was to find a MP game we can play together until BCM comes out. It was decided that the demo versions of Quake 1 and Xwing versus Tie Fighter will be used, because they have multiplayer and are downloads of less than 10 Megs each. Both of these game demos are available for download at www.happypuppy.com. These games will get the squadrons working as teams, and give us valuable MP practice so that we can be a Wing to be feared when BCM comes out. My goal is to play together at least once every two weeks to start. So, let's try to get even more people to next week's gathering!! I'll post a discussion topic later in the week. (You can almost pronounce it the same as Stryker) DREADA, those shots of Titan base, and the buried ship, were created by one James Wilson (ie ME). I made them on COREL's Dream3D renderer. Now, hold on here a second, Ron. There is a Fleet Commander Mark Stryker in the Manual. I see no reason why a person with a different first name AND of a different rank cannot exist within the bc3000 organization. Kirk's full name is user name, so there is no confusion there. If we can we the GCV-Blackstar and the GCV-Black Star, or the Galactea and the Galactae, why can't we have a Fleet Commander Mark Stryker and a Commander Kirk Stryker? ------------------ Commander S. Here's my two bits: We've already dealt with this problem, for the foreseable future. In the RPing Servers, which are the ones we really care about, the only ships that will carry the GCV or ECV or ICV designations will be those belonging to fleets. The members of the fleets already have a way of dealing with this problem, that being that the first commander to post the ship name, gets dibs. That means that there will be one and only one GCV-Tsunami, one GCV-Diligence, and one GCV-Warmonger.
