mentis938 Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 I may be asking for the wrath of everyone here... ...but, is anyone out there running UC on an overclocked machine without instability? Seems to me that UC doesn't like overclocking, so that's why I'm asking. Anyone know why that is? ...just curious .
mentis938 Posted March 7, 2004 Author Report Posted March 7, 2004 That's cool man. But then again, you got a P4 machine, whereas mine's an AMD. Not really sure if that makes a difference for UC, but so far I've tried running UC overclocked and it would lockup on loading your save. That and I've read on the forum elsewhere that the game doesn't like overclocking. Any thoughts on that?

mentis938 Posted March 11, 2004 Author Report Posted March 11, 2004 Well, you know I finally overclocked and got things to run stable. I don't think it was particularly UC, just a general mobo/overclocking issue. So yeah. And hey, I gained about 5-20 fps on average. So that's nice!
street228 Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 90% of overclocking problems with data transfer of packet communications with any digital device, is due to NOISE(i.e. cross talk between adjacent I/O lines) or simply a low(0) being mistaken for a high(1);thus corrupt information passed through the processor, ram, or other device within the system.
mentis938 Posted April 19, 2004 Author Report Posted April 19, 2004 I suppose I should add that since my last post, I have upgraded my system and greatly overclocked it (check my sig). I have not encountered any stability issues with UC since then.

Every system is different, AMD has always been better suited to overclocking, ever since way back, when we use to change out the crystals and add capps to the mother boards...LOL if it works..it works!! My buddy just bought some OCZ PC4000, and he's been able to get his FSB up to 250-275. So he's looking at getting 2.6-2.8 GHz. Oh and that's all on air cooling for both of us .

Hmm, I've been able o/c recently, but I haven't tried UC since then. I upped the multi from 11 to 12.5. I haven't been able to o/c the FSB though, I bought PC3200, but i can't even get above 166, even with the multi at 5. Is it my mobo, or possibly my RAM, because it isn't name brand or anything.
mentis938 Posted May 3, 2004 Author Report Posted May 3, 2004 When overclocking, RAM is probably your most important component. If you bought no name RAM, the you won't be able to overclock very much at all. A decent compromise for Ram is the Kingston Hyper X, which is what I have. But the other brands will give you much more (though you will also pay for it). OCZ, Mushkin, and the like are pretty top notch stuff, but they don't come cheap. If you really want to know more, visit www.overclockingforums.com and you'll find all your answers, he he. I am also happy to say that I get over 100 fps with UC in space, and around a good solid 60 planetside. It drops a little sometimes when a lot of stuff goes on, but that's got a lot to do with my gfx card, which is getting to be a bit dated.
