Hello all. I am new to this series and new to this game. I have some questions regarding effective use of assets and other related issues and would appreciate any help.

1. Can assets be upgraded? (i.e. shuttles, fighters, etc.)

2. Is there any way to form marine teams and give them orders short of individually in TacOps?

3. How do I effectively use SM's?

4. Is there an option similar to fleet C&C for marines and pilots in order to form squads/wings?

Any advice at all on tactical operations would be welcome. I was an infantryman for 4 years, but we obviously didn't have access to shuttles and super fighters

Well, to your first point, no, only your CC can be upgraded. I donÔÇÖt know much about commanding marines, I never go planetside except to strafe starbases and land mining drones, but you canÔÇÖt really form wings will your fighters (and I donÔÇÖt know if there would be a reason to, after all clumping together is a disadvantage).

As far as I know there's way to put your Marines into teams.

Good question... I use them as shuttle pilots personally, but you can deploy them into space, I believe. Read the VCF for instructions on how to do so.

No.

  1. No
  2. You can in BCG but not in BCM
  3. It depends. In the final patch before the BCM mp patch, you will be able to deploy them into space in order to engage a station's SFMs. Other than that, they're just marines.
  4. No. But you have the Support Units tab in Tacops and on the Fleet CC menu. This gives you quick access to all your units.

BCG has all of the above and then some.

So what you're saying is that I should have waited a year or so and bought a later incarnation? lol

ok, more questions.

1. As a marine or pilot are you doomed to forever be a loner, or do friendlies show up to help?

2. How do I go about increasing the crew's AI?

3. Do co-pilots serve a purpose or can I assign them to shuttles without hindering the fighters' effectiveness?

4. Why does the manual say I can assign waypoints to away teams and transporter teams but the game doesn't let me?

5. Is there any way to tell how far along the RE is when ID'ing artifacts?

6. Is there any way to see what kind of minerals a planet/moon would yield?

7. Is there any reason to explore planets that do not have visible zones?

I know this is a lot of questions, but I don't like floundering around not knowing what to do and no offense, but the manual and tutorials didn't help me very much with the execution of tasks. Is there a place I can go to find these answers, or do I just keep pestering you guys?

Well. Newbie Welcome Wagon returns. I'm rusty from months of shore leave, so excuse me not knowing everything. That's SC's job, anywhoo.

Yes and no. In the game, right now, under free flight, it's just as usual, with the random AI guys coming in and out of reality. If a friendly station is under attack, expect it to launch shit.

2. How do I go about increasing the crew's AI?

I only know of one way, and that's to leave them on station. Someone did some calculations on how long it'd take you to get them to 100 AI, and the figures came out to like a few months or something, IIRC. Make sure Windows is clean and like, stable, before undertaking such a mission. My rig's not really stable enough to go longer than like a couple days game time, but that's because I screw around too much. Lol.

It's something about the accuracy of the shooting/bombardment. You can re-assign them as you wish. In something like the uber-carriers, you can have each pilot fly one fighter if you really really need the power.

Haven't used ground crews so much. I'll look at this, since I'd be interested, too. I do know that you acn assign waypoints to craft, and those OC craft, and give orders to single marines. If stuff's not in the game yet, SC might've changed his mind, or might do it in MP. We'll hvae to see.

5. Is there any way to tell how far along the RE is when ID'ing artifacts?

There is a chart somewhere or some data somewhere, that I recall, that listed some sort of timeframe for the research. It varies on the AI level of the RE, so mileage varies. I don't know of anyway to see the research process. Just leave it alone, and pretend it's not there. I try to buy artifacts earlier than usual, just to make time for that.

6. Is there any way to see what kind of minerals a planet/moon would yield?

Nope. It's (sorta)random, I think, according to SC.

7. Is there any reason to explore planets that do not have visible zones?

Not unless you're mining. Or jumping ship. Or leaving Resnig out to catch a cold.

Read the boards, and hang around. (That's how I learned and stuffs.) There's the FAQ and VCF (links @ top of board index page). Also. Check out the Appendix; like, very seriously. It's like better than the manual.

Um... And experiment in the game. Lol, half of us didn't exactly know what to expect with regards to new stuff and differences to 3000ad. If you can't find a way to do something, then it's either not there, or you're looking in the wrong place. (Like, go to Tactical to replace a destroyed shuttle, opposed to Logistix, and etc.)

Anyway, sorry I couldn't really be of much help. Shore leave really messes with you. Remember that.

I let Resnig wander around some planets once. Then he caught some virus and i beamed him aboard. Then some idiotic Gammulan came and blasted my medibay. I got away but stupid Resnig was still sick. Then the idiot wandered around getting everyone sick. So i took a shuttle with a marine who wasnt sick. I left the crew to die and flew away. Then i realized that the marine GOT THE VIRUS on his way to the shuttle. I caught it to. So I crashed my CC full speed head on into the Atlantic ocean.

SO NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO NEVER LET RESNIG LEAVE AND IF HE DOES KILL HIM BEFORE HE GETS BACK

I might be completely clueless, but if make sure your crew members are actually doing something, their ai will increase faster. i.e. get escorted by your fighters and shuttles, put marines on search, fly on autopilot (NOT in combat, that would be plain stupid) .. stuff like that.

I believe after a while my 2 shuttle pilots we're up to 25 ai, and even at that point they seemed less stupid. my flight officer went over 30 ai.

Hence the word: sequel

  1. Dunno why this is even being answered. Have you actually tried going into friendly/hostile territory as a marine/pilot to see what happens? Try it.
  2. Reading the manual would be a great start
  3. If the pilot in a fighter dies (which he can, even if the craft is fine), guess what happens without a co-pilot.
  4. Because I disabled it before BCM was released. It could be done in previous BC titles but the complexity of BCM made it more extensive than I would've liked. I plan putting it back in BCM once it is actually implemented in BCG and tested.
  5. No. Maybe in BCG
  6. No. This is random but also tied to the composite nature of the planet. See the navchart section of the appendix.
  7. Unless you are mining, no. If there are no mzones on the planet, there's nothing to explore. I was planning on not displaying anything in Tacops when observing a planet, unless you had a probe in orbit, but decided against it. That would have provided a good reason to explore a planet.

Maybe I'm missing the point of the game, but I kinda like to know what kind of odds I'm looking at before I go into combat. I'll try to just jump in and see what happens before I ask questions from now on.

Oh, yeah...is there a printer friendly version of the appendix anywhere?

Well, I found at some point that pilots flying alone in fighters are more effective. Maybe it's stupid, but it really works. There's a higher chance that they will get killed in a dogfight, than run out of fuel.

I have some parts of the appendix in a printer ready format, the really important stuff like artifacts and missiles and such not.

Yea same here, but I bet you haven't done the ship specs or the trade list!

I've done just the carrier ships but then got bored with having to re-arrange the text. May get around to finishing them of some time. Like you, I have done all the main bits like Artifacts and EP's. Knowing the EP's is good for deciding either to blow something up, disable and tow it or capture it.

See, you guys need to make that stuff available to the rest of us!! And the trade list is already printer friendly.

Posted

Yea, the trade list aint that important. What is is the starstations type and inflation levels. Knowing this, you should be able to make 100 million in the first 2 hours. Then it's upgrade and butt kicking time!!!

A little tip for target pratice, send Resnig out on a shuttle and shoot it. Then clone him and do it again!!!

If you want some printer friendly pages (well fairly friendly) on which you can sort the data before you print it try these web page

Just be careful when you enter the search criteria, its all to easy to restrict the search so that no data is returned.

On the Trading item page the price cargo displacement ratio is especially useful when you have more money than cargo space got to optimise those trade runs.

Edit: URL updated.

Rubbish

How did you copy that then?

Whenever I tried to copy it into Word, it never retained the table format! Could not be arsed to reformat all of that myself.

Umm...to print the trade list, just highlight the text in IE and go file, print, and check the box that says, "selection"

BTW, beware of the Chicken Fleet!

Yes yes, do beware.

They are ever so tasty when fried with 11 herbs and spices. Could very well cause one to suffer some Dunlap Disease.

Actually, the reformatting didn?t take much time as I happen to be good at that type of thing (a skill you pick up if you?re picky about formatting).
