The type of weapon used doesn't really matter. If I die at the hands of an intruder in my home, hey it was my time to go anyway. It is beyond logic as to why anyone would wish to break into your home, in the dark, and stumble around looking for valuables when the owner of the home knows the layout and can navigate in the dark without much effort. Advantage homeowner. The streets are a different matter. Your only defense is to use your brains. I too have pulled a weapon on an unscrupulous individual. I didn't have to point it at him, just let him see it and let him know that I wasn't afraid to use it if need be. As for the points made regarding the standing army of the US: Each state in the US does have a standing militia. The National Guard. They are governed by the same standards as the regular army, but can be called out by the states' Governor during civil emergencies. It was National Guardsmen who shot the students at Kent State. So one could say that the Federal army didn't go against the citizens, it was a state militia called up by the Governor of Ohio. My point is that that very militia was trained by, governed by, and controlled by the rules and regulations of the Federal military. There were other tools than weapons that could have been used to ease the situation at Kent State, but the government was fighting an unpopular war at the time and for some strange reason they apparently felt that a message had to be sent to the dissident people. That message was, "Chill your jets or we'll shoot every damned one of you!" In my book, that was an act of a dictatorial government. One could say that we have a free society in this country. If you look at it from a different angle though, you will see that it is not truly free. The electoral process is flawed in that we vote for only a very few candidates. The majority doesn't rule. It is in fact a very small group of people. A good ol' boys and girls club that dictates from a seat of power that is fueled by the big money of corporate America. The corporate big wigs are also members of this elitist club. What is really sad is the fact that they get to where they are by riding on the backs of the common citizens. Have you ever wondered why our government doesn't have more proactive educational policies? Because uneducated people are easier to control. Keep them poor and stupid and they will never have a say in what the government is doing. So the fat get fatter while the little people starve. Boil it all down, no matter where you live, you are only free within the confines of your own thoughts. That is something that noone can take from you.

Joel, I used to have the same problem with an IBM I had. Only way I found to cure it was to let it boot into safe mode, run scandisk & defrag, then restart the PC. Also, check your start-up files in the System Configuration Utility to make sure some errant little program didn't add itself in there. I always run my machine from a clean boot (Systray and Explorer only), then start any needed programs manually. Oh, and a 300 W power supply is a really good piece of advice.

At the register the woman paid for the items with food stamps. They pushed the baskcart loaded with bagged groceries outside and loaded them into the trunk of a brand new Cadillac. Here's how the scam works. Woman goes on welfare shortly after her first marriage breaks up. The couple have produced one or two children during the two year marriage. So, she gets money and food stamps for them as well. The woman will quickly find an employed male to move into the house. Usually this male will not be reported on the lease of the government housing the woman and her three children now occupy. Yes, that's right, three children. The third has appeared from the boyfriend, reported as father unknown, and signed onto the welfare rolls with the rest of the family. More money, more food stamps, and a possible housing upgrade. So here you have a couple living like royalty. The boyfriend works to pay for all the trappings of modern life, while they get free food, housing, and monetary assistance for utilities from the taxpayers. I'm all for giving someone a leg up when they're down on their luck, but to support people who feel no remorse for the act of fraud, just burns my bacon. COUNTERPOINT: Insult. AOL? I have but one word for AOL. BAH! Signing up with AOL is like handing over your computer to a criminal and saying, "Here, get me on the net. I trust you." "We're so easy." It's internet with training wheels, but nevermind that cliff they're about to push you over. As of this date, there are enough local ISP's out there that are more than happy to assist the novice in setting up web connectivity. And they don't throw a bunch of garbage on your PC that you don't want or need. I used to work tech support for one of the major DSL players in the Midwest. Imagine my chagrin every time I had a call from some moron who complained about his DSL connection not working. When I quizzed them about having AOL on their system, they would answer, yes I have AOL. Why? I would ask them, "Why do you need AOL, when you have DSL? DSL is a direct connection to the net, and it's a proven fact that all of AOL's adapters interfere with the protocols needed by your DSL connection." Not only did AOL's adapters interfere, they wouldn't go away after making the proper adjustments. After re-boot, AOL changed all the settings back to what AOL wanted. If you have AOL, get rid of it, wipe your drive, reload your OS, and get a real ISP. Not some piece of garbage proxy server like AOL. There wasn't a great deal of infantry used in the Gulf War. The U.S. doesn't use those types of tactics anymore. It was all Armor, Cavalry, Artillery, and the most important guys of all.. Combat Engineers. Most of the positions the Iraqi's occupied were already destroyed by air assets before the ground forces arrived. All we found was smoking holes and a few bewildered Iraqi conscripts who more than willing to give up. Some still wearing the same civilian clothing they had on when they were snatched off the streets of Baghdad. And heaven help the poor Joe who addressed a Female Drill as Ma'am. That one usually invoked alot of screaming, spitting, and general Buck Private butt ripping. "I WORK FOR A LIVING YOU PIECE OF *&^%!!!" Was the standard response. The only difference that I could ever see between the Marines and the Army was the method of delivery. Marines take the boat with the Navy, while all us Army Joes fly in with the Air Force. But once we both hit the ground, it's butt kickin' time! Here's some more advice for the new Private. Ever hear the saying, "Never Volunteer"? When I was in boot camp, the Drills asked for a volunteer and we all stood there looking like idiots. To say it ticked them Drills off would be GROSS understatement. We spent the next two hours doing rock drills. So if a Drill asks for volunteer/s, you better be knocking people out of your way to get to the front! Also, if you screw up and the Drill puts his brown round on your forehead and starts spitting in your face, asking why you screwed up... your standard reply should be: "No excuse Sergeant!" And heaven help your young fourth point of contact if you get a female Drill, or worse, several female Drills. God gave you two eyes, two ears, and one mouth for the sole purpose of looking and listening twice as much as you talk. Words to live by in the military. Good luck in your new career. Hang in there Cruis. You can do it. We had guys in basic training who could turn 2 miles in 9 minutes or less. Most of them ran track in high school. I was an old Joe at the age of 33, so I wasn't pushing it turning in a 14:30. According to the standards the army goes by for someone my age at the time, I had 18:30 as a minimum standard for the 2 mile run to pass it. Do you think the drill instructors told me this before the final PT test? Not no, but he** no! I was a little weak in the upper body area, so I was assigned 10 to the wind duty everytime I laid eyes on a specific drill instructor. Basically, I was expected to pass the test at the same standards as the 18 year olds. I did So I know you can do it. Just don't hurt yourself in the process. Streeeetch ------------------ Cmdr H. T.
