I got my VisionTek Geforce3 from a store off of www.pricewatch.com for about $350 (Retail is $400). I had a Geforce 1 Special Underclocked Editition and got under 1000 marks on 3d Mark 2001 (1 GHz Thunderbird with 256 megs of RAM). With this GF3, I get over 4100 Marks at the same settings . Also Tribes2 was a wee bit jerky at 800x600 for me, now I raised the resolution and it runs smooth. I haven't messed around with FSAA all to much, because at higher resolutions, you don't really need it..... but then again... Serious Sam with FSAA on at 1600x1200 with a smooth FPS looks purdy... Conclusion, If you have a GF1 or slower, a GF3 would probably be a nice upgrade. If you have a GF2, wait till the GF3 Ultra Special Super Duper edition, or the GF4. I had a little problem installing the GF3, but then I read in the instructions that if you have a VIA chipset, you need to upgrade it. Once I did, it worked swell. At first IMO Voyager was not to bad, but the past 2 seasons, have gone down a whole lot IMO. Same thing happens, it is quite predictible. Nothing really new, just the same old stuff regurgitated(spelling?) back at you. Also methinks there are a whole lotta errors, conflicting ideas/technology, and a whole lotta CHEESE. For example, Voyager must have gone through 30 or so shuttles in the past few seasons where do they get them, etc.? Here is how almost each Voyager episode goes: A lesser alien race with weak ships beats the snot out of voyager. Voyager comes up with some plan to beat/overcome the WEAKER ship/race. Voyager faced the borg quite easily about 2 seasons ago (I think) but now even a shuttle can seem to dissable them in 2 (give or take) shots. Voyager just dosen't have the space battles that DS9 did.

What about ION cannons? I wonder if they would dissable ST ships......I guess no one will know...... But In the book: "Star Wars: THe Essential guide to Weapons and Technology" it says "When a blaster is fired, a small amount of high-energy blaster gas moves from the gas champer to the gas conversion enabler. There the gas is excited by energy from the weapon's power source........The excited gas passes into the actuating blaster module, where it is processed into a beam comprised of intense energy particles coupled with light. The prismatic crystal focuses the beam, and is futher focused as it passes down the barrel. The final particle beam, or bolt contains high energy particles that cause tremendous damage to anything they hit; the bolt's visible light is a harmless by-product of this reaction. Thats how blasters work, and One can probably assume that that is also how the big turbolasers on the big ships work too..... So it is not just light.. it is gas or something along those lines.

Fill your transporter with marines, and in Tacops place a waypoint in an enemy base with orders to search and destroy. Deploy the marienes in the enemy base, and they will cause quite a bit of destruction

$550 for a geforce3? Haven't you heard that Nvidia has announced that the geforce3 cards will sell for around $400? www.pricewatch.com has Asus GF3's and other brands for around $400. -

It is just fun! (If you know where to look, you can find it's rom, and a SNES emulater to play it on your 'puter)

Dell, and a few other companies have p3 800+ Mhz laptops with the all new mobile Geforce 2 MX video card for around $2500. The benchmarks on them were comparable with upper end desktop computers.

Looks like good stuff...... though it does seem to load a couple microseconds slower.....

What a Find! (Bargain Bin Treasures)
LordDavid replied to Charles Lindsey's topic in PC Gaming & Technology
I have found some good deals in the pre-owned software section in the local Electronics Botique(spelling?). They have some good stuff from anywhere from $3 to $10. For Example, I've gotten Halflife, Imperium Galactica 2, etc, there for around 7$, and have even seen Descent 3 and Baulder's Gate there for under $10. -
OK, I played Tribes 2 for a few hours now. Now that the effect of the superior graphics has worn away, I would say that the gameplay of the origional Tribes is just a wee bit better IMO. Tribes 2 is still good and fun, with many improvements, but IMO the over all feel just isn't quite as it was with the origional game. (Who knows, with more playing my opinion might change ) BTW, The game runs well on my 1 GHz with a GeForce, but I tried installing it and running on a p400 with a voodoo2 and it was... horrible! Hopefully some good user MODS will come out soon like the origional game (The Shifter mod was my fav.. ) ------------------ Commodore lordDavid ICV Dark Saber, New America (Midae) Satation Commander, New America Eversor Fleet Official BC3K Tester [This message has been edited by LordDavid (edited 03-31-2001).]

Well, I got Tribes 2, and like the origional, I like it. Nuff Said, Im going back to play some more of Tribes 2. (Man, If BCM's terrain graphics look even 3/4ths as good as this....... with fighters, tanks, 10000's of miles of land.. then WoW!) ------------------ Commodore lordDavid ICV Dark Saber, New America (Midae) Satation Commander, New America Eversor Fleet Official BC3K Tester

The only console that I will even consider buying right now is the Xbox. But I doubt that I will buy one. Right now, I am waiting for the Geforce 3 to come out.......

How would the MK3 fare in battle against other ships
LordDavid replied to Charles Lindsey's topic in Role Playing Discussions
What if the borg were to assimilate a Jedi Knight/Sith Lord? Vader is already half way borg with his mechanical parts. I can just see it now.... An assilimated YODA! "Futile is resistance! Assimilate you, we will, yes..mmmm" LOL [This message has been edited by LordDavid (edited 03-26-2001).] -

Well, What are we discussing here? StarTrek lore VS StarWars lore, or the Federation VS the Empire? Species 8472 on Star Trek has ships that can blow up entire planets plus those ships are a lot more maneuverable than the Deathstar...... This is probably going to cause a lot more strife : What if we brought Babylon 5 into this? [This message has been edited by LordDavid (edited 03-26-2001).] -

Just watched Starwars and Han said that the falcon can travel .5 past light speed. Now compare that to warp 9 which is MANY times faster than just lightspeed. Yes, I believe the borg will adapt to anything. Also you said the Defiant was a lightly armed shuttle/transport. False, It was made to fight the borg. It is an over powered little ship that bacically can tear itself appart. Ahh, This discussion will probably get us no where. There have been 1000's of poast on SWars VS Trek with no conclusion.... THey are two different stories with different lore. The only whay we probably would know which one would beat each other up is to have George Lucas and Gene Roddenberry ( ) discuss things one on one. Startrek Vs Starwars... hmmm I think a trek ship would win over an ISD. FIrst off, the ships on SW have lasers. Startrek ships used phased energy. In one episode of TNG, a puny ship was threatening the Enterprise with lasers. Piccard was not worried one bit. Second, Startrek ships can fight at warp speed, the SW ships probably couldn't even shoot them at warp. Also borg shields probably could addapt to the lasers on SW quite easily..... Just some thoughts.... -

In one episode of Voyager the Promethius fired a torpedo that homed in on a Defiant class ship.. (That Promethius is one tough ship!) Also plasma torpedos can home in.. but they take a long time to charge up and slowly lose their energy after traveling. -

IMO I think the MK3 (using Interceptors) would beat Voyager. Have you seen the latest episodes? It seems like Voyager gets the snot kicked out of it every episode. On the show it seems like even ships 1/3rd of its size can down its shields with just two hits and then the crew have to make up a strategy to win. But vs everything else... who knows...... ------------------ Commodore lordDavid ICV Dark Saber, New America (Midae) Satation Commander, New America Eversor Fleet Official BC3K Tester
