but a search of the forums turned up nothing, and I don't see any mention of it in the Dev Diary... SC - I was wondering, although I realize that there must be specific reasons as to why there are no shadows in the current version of BCM...will there be plans to incorporate them in the future, through a patch? or is that too big a task? Also, not knowing a whole lot about computers, I have read in another thread that this game will already tax most people's PC to near their limit as it is, I'm assuming that this is the reason that shadows have been omitted. bear in mind, that I really don't think it's a big deal....still...just wondering. please don't hurt me, I actually did search for this question and possible explanation, but could not find it. thanks, Lucas [ 09-01-2001: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]

Single Molecule Computer Circuit : WHOOHOO!
Real_Lucas replied to a topic in Science, Technology & Health
that's pretty cool indeed. Can't wait the 20 years (probably longer) it'll take to be implimented into the computers that we use. -
Surviving the Game was really good. and Bruce Willis is a great actor and great action movie star...but he should stay out of the music scene. Boyz in the Hood was a great movie. so basically, Hellbinder, you and I agree.

Really, I find this "unequivocal rule" of yours rather interesting. Especially as one of the most successful box office draws of all time started in film knowing almost no english and his only claim to fame at the time was having been Mr. Universe. I am of course talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger, ever hear of him? And what about Rowdy Roddy Piper? a wrestler (I'm not a wrestling fan) who made one really excellent film called 'They Live'. Do you then believe that Martial Arts movies suck too? Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, to name a few, started in competition sports...not acting...or rather movie making. Perhaps you need to generalize less and express your opinion more succinctly. I find it interesting how a person can formulate a negative opinion on something they haven't even seen. Now I personally have little interest in 'the Ghosts of Mars', except perhaps to wait for the video release, but I will likely check it out at a later date, and form an opinion after I have seen it. Bear in mind, I'm not in total disagreement with you....Shaq, Hulk Hogan, Brian Bosworth and many others who started out in sports, should have stayed in sports, but most of the time, they are thrown bag loads of money and a stupid script and they don't give a damn about the movie itself. This seems to be the cookie cutter nature of mainstream 'blockbuster' making, but is not a statement for all films made with people who did not start out in acting...or classically trained actors. Rant over.

well a low or moderate rating indicates that it's likely that you don't have a 'disorder' you have 'tendencies'....here are my results Results: Disorder Rating Information Paranoid: Moderate Schizoid: Moderate Schizotypal: Low Antisocial: Low Borderline: Low Histrionic: Moderate Narcissistic: High Avoidant: Low Dependent: Low Obsessive-Compulsive: Low okay, okay...I lied about the obsessive compulsiveness. But hey I'm Narcissistic and Histrionic! does my butt look fat in this dress?

does this mean that when killed an enemy is vaporized? or he just falls down as though he suddenly had a coronary? either way, I really don't care. I'm just really looking forward to this game. is it not possible to bypass the ESRB rating by releasing a subsequent patch that re-enables the blood splatter? just wondering.
-
oh come on please? pretty please...with sugar on top? it won't be too deep...I promise....just a paper cut. seriously though, I can understand the reasons why the blood is removed (to appeal to a younger audience), but I do so love the blood splatter...it's either, give it to me in a game, or I see what it's like in reality. j/k

Ideas for "What is BCM's genre" quandary.

desolator, I believe that the pics on the box...at least the current incarnations of it, already say; Battlecruiser Millenium A Derek Smart Simulation as this happens to be true, due to the fact that he decided to incorporate so many different elements into his game, I believe that he was looking for a legitimate interpretation of the genre based on the scope of the game, and the types of games which BCM incorporates in one package. That is what he states in the Dev Diary...or at least that is my interpretation of it. Therefore, iF SC were satisfied with "a derek smart simulation", which would only be true for the games that SC developes, why would he even propose the categorization of the game type? HEnce the opening of this thread.... this is just an opinion and is subject to change based upon the response or clarification by the SC or the developement team. Later, Lucas -

okay, let's see what Battlecruiser has to offer, in no particular order; FPS - First Person Shooter RPG - Role Playing Game RTS - Real Time Startegy Sim - Simulator Adv - adventure game so, after wracking my brain again, I've thought of a good one; FES - Fully Encompassing Simulator -

oh how about Multi Environment Dynamic Real Time Simulator or True Realtime Immersive Multi Environment TRI-ME I couldn't think of a contextual word that starts with Y. -

How about Virtual Reality? it doesn't have to be for 3d glasses you know. -

how about; Battle Command Simulator - BCS for short. Fully Immersive Battle Simulator - FIBS for short better yet; Fully Immersive Tactical Simulator - that FITS. the only problem that one might encounter is if you call it a Totally Immersive Tactical Simulator. -
quote:Originally posted by Malleus Malefictorum: As quoted in the Ringworld Tech Manual: "REACTIONLESS DRIVE: Any Sub-light propulsion system which does not eject a stream of matter (or photons) to produce thrust, such as a gravity polarizer or a thruster." The benefits to this are: You don't have to lug around reaction mass (which takes up space and weight) and there is no "left overs" to track your ship by. Unfortunately, a reaction control thruster fires in bursts or flashes. REactinless thruster is an oxymoron in that it is a contradiction in terms. A gravitic drive or 'polarizer' as you describe would be a more adequate description, however these cannot (by definition) be untrackable as they produce radiation or 'energy waves' to generate propulsion. in the end in order to move, an object MUST push against 'something'.

Kind of over done already with Armaggedon and the other movie like it (I can't remember the name. Just the scene with the guy surfing the tidal wave through L.A. Would be worth the cost of admission. you are mixing 2 movies there. There were three movies that had stuff hitting the earth really hard. 1) Meteor 2) Armageddon 3) Deep Impact the movie where the guy is surfing the tidal wave may have been from Escape from LA, which had nothing to do with the other 3 films, and was just plain bad.

Anyway, Luc, you and your friend may want to send Lisa over at [email protected], a resume - which also includes your skiils, tools used etc. We're currently hiring level designers for the creation of interiors for all capital ships, starbases and stations, for GCO and quite possibly a stand-alone add-on for BCM. Who knows, you might just get hired. wow, now that's an endorsement. thanks SC. the only thing is that, that site is my resume.... and it's built in 3ds r4 (dos) not max, my friend Tom Grays is building his designated components in Lightwave 6.0 (could be 5.6, I'm not sure). I have no formal experience in 3d model building except persistence and perfectionism. there is no set deadline for this, so I have been using this project as a sanity strengthener. I never thought I'd be told that I'd be good enough to design for a game. wow, those drafting courses seem to be paying off. I have other projects on the go as well, I'm a details freak and when I build ships I like them to be fully functional and I try to make sure that the engineering makes sense....at least from the perspective of the medium with which I work. thanks again.

thanks guys. I appreciate the comments. It is a huge project, but I do this to relax.

considering that cgi is a hobby for me, it's for fun, it's still a work in progress, although I would love to be able to devote more time to it...but I have bills to pay, etc etc.

well, for you die hard game fans, and Niven fans...someone actually made a Ringworld adventure game...it's pretty old (a dos title), in fact I think it came out in the hay day of the Sierra Isometric view point and click adventures (that's the type of game it was). Not too crappy, but it sure as hell would look better now as a first person RPG type game like system shock 2, or deus ex. Malleus - that was in Star trek the animated series?? that explains why I had no idea. and...REACTIONLESS THRUSTERS?? what's the point in having 'thrusters' that fart instead of push? Unless of course you want the ship to stink in the direction that you want it to go. I would love to see 'the mote in god's eye' made into a movie...as long as at least ONE of the writers contributed to the making of it (preferably Niven), but I would accept Pournelle and Barnes too.

and let me know what you think.... a 'big' surprise
