yeah, they call the effect "bullet-time" which is exactly like in the matrix, or that farce of a movie Wing Commander, or as I like to call it "Wash Closet" (WC, not Matrix). the controls are setup so that you can move with the keyboard, aim with the mouse, fire by left clicking and then use bullet time by right clicking. the effect is actually finite and you have to kill baddies to replenish your reserves of the 'ability'. The coolness factor in it is that you can aim just as fast as usual, see the travelling bullets or buckshot and do crazy wild aerial maneuvres a-la 'Anything by John Woo'. It looks really cool, but I've made the mistake of buying games on looks alone before....anyone else remember 'Cyberia'?

does anyone know of any games (that they think are actually good) that will even remotely have the scope and magnitude of BCM? I have heard that David Braben is in the process of creating Elite 4, but there has been exactly ZERO developement news on it. I just love games like this.

I just read the review over at Gamespot, and I must say it looks pretty good. they say that it looks really impressive and the gameplay is really intuitive. However it does have a few issues, namely some animation errors and primarily that it's a tad short...they say that it 'should' take 10 to 15 hours of gameplay to complete. To me, that roughly translates to 1 day and therefore seriously hampers my enthusiasm for what is probably a highly enjoyable game, but an incredibly short lived experience. It seems that there are no other projects at all out there with even 1/9th (subtle comparison) the scope of at least ONE (even more subtle) game that is soon to be released.

hehhe. it's funny how age seems to always play a factor in who plays games and such. Personally, I think it's refreshing to see that most of the people around here are generally older than the teens that most of the games are 'targetted for'. My ex-girlfriend never understood my fascination with videogames (or cartoons for that matter). I'm 30...going on 15.

LOL! Fendi, didn't they hint at that in one of the Red Dwarf episodes when the Cat decides he has to go "behind the bushes" on the backwards earth. hilarious.

Apollon, it just seemed to me that the use of the word 'legitimate' in the context that you described meant 'worthwhile'. It is something I strongly disagree with. Perhaps I just imposed a view that wasn't necessary. I'll shut up now. I apologize if I jumped on you too harshly.

oh yeah, and speaking of an incredibly detailed game...check out what Metal Gear Solid 2 can do!! the stuff in that game is amazing...too bad it's a playstation game. I just hope that it gets ported over to the PC. For Metal Gear Solid, even though the japanese to english translation, in my opinion, seemed to have been translated and approved by someone who spoke more japanese than english, the game was excellent, even if a little dated for the PC. (why do japanese to english translations always suck? they are only funny in Monty Python movies and Godzilla flics (then again, the original japanese is hilarious in the Godzilla movies). I'm sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear in my intent. What I meant to say in the vein of the comment made earlier was that it would be generally foolish to consider the purchase (or not) of a product based on ONE person's personal view of that product, whether he used it, looked at it on his way to the bathroom to find some drano to ingest or had heard other people complain about how shiny it was and that it made their sphincters implode. Basically, I am one of the few people I know that takes 'opinion' to mean personal preference and that I have my own and they, theirs. Therefore it is relatively unwise to consider anything on only one opinion. Conversely, if you see many opinions that gravitate towards the same general conclusion, then wisdom should dictate (provided each of the opinions expressed are not from the same person) your probable course of action...or inaction. sorry for the sarcasm, I have been drinking way too much coffee...I mean nothing personal by it.

...BC3K is no longer considered a legitimate product, so it will not be supported,..." ouch!that doesn't sound like a fan. I would have chosen my words more carefully. [ 07-24-2001: Message edited by: Luc ]

I haven't played the demo of Op flashpoint, but it definitely looks promising. I'll be looking forward to Deus Ex 2 as well, but I'll hold my enthusiasm for when there is at least a little more info on what the story is and what it will actually look like and what you can do in it. Driving vehicles would be a definite plus, I think I absolutely loved Deus Ex, even though there were performance issues, even on my p3 650 with 128meg of ram. But with the current patch, those issues appear to have been resolved....the thing is that I finished it ages ago, long before the patch came out. I wonder if Looking Glass will make a sequel to System Shock 2....that series was awesome.

no problem...I'm really looking forward to Love Cruise and Temptation Island...NOT! I really hope the Tick doesn't suck, I am so looking forward to that. I loved the cartoon and the comic was hilarious. I read an exceprt from the pilot, I almost wet myself.

...oh and who in their right mind considers a single person's opinion over another person's work to be more valid than your own...if that were the case, there would be what....18 people here? instead of over 2300 registered members?
-
frankly, I think the only time you are going to get a brutally honest review about anything is if there is no financial motivation for the reviewer to write it....but then, what the hell would be the point?

those pics are excellent, I especially love the night time pic. I was wondering...if you walk around in night time, will there be the option to have flashlights or nightvision goggles? or is that a little too picky?

whoa. I don't know what to say...except I'm glad that you and your family are alright (despite the shock).

WOW! "The engine doesn't care if the entity is a craft, character or cargo pod. It knows how to handle each one." that makes sense, as they are just objects to the engine. "So, creating a counter strike type mod for single or multiplayer, is so trivial, its kinda ridiculous, really. You make it look so damned EASY!! I think I understand what you mean by 'trivial' as far as 'content light' but I had no idea that the design of bcm was so modular and (seemingly) easy to manipulate to the users own ends. Awesome! "Cool stuff, aye? I don't think I can recall any similar massive understatement.

I've been a huge game fan for a loooong time (I remember when pong wasn't old), Pac man and Defender were still the main games in laundromats (before Arcades). But anticipate some really cool games coming out this year (by the way, I'm a big FPS fan. Ever since Wolfenstein, Spear of Destiny) But way more of a fan when I bought Half Life and Opposing Force. Now that those games have proved their worth, they are rehashing fps games. take a look at the preview shots of Return to Wolfenstein, Duke NUkem Forever, Operation Flashpoint, Allied Assault: Medal of Honour, etc. The only problem I forsee is that I probably will be too engrossed in BCM for the most part to actually find the time to play those games.

do you mean this?; v2.3.08.01 - 07.06.01 GBS revisions : now supports optional mission zone and scene parameters for SET_REGION i.e set_region planet[,mission zone[,scene]] e.g set_region farstar,ia_mzone08 now supports entities started on PTE2 terrain i.e start on_planet planet mzone x y z heading e.g. start inactive on_planet farstar ia_mzone08 151 50 0 0 The X/Y/Z values are actual mzone co-ordinates as displayed in Tacops or PTEstudio (stats display) now supports abstract ship classes e.g. The following will create 10 randomly selected fighters of the same class CLASS NAVALCARRIER:NAVAL2.3D,naval { SHIP={10,FIGHTER}; } if so that generally answers my question. And I am even more excited as to the prospect. However it was not the only thing I had in mind. thanks, Lucas

one thing I noticed over the years were that some magazines seem to be influenced by the advertizing that they have in the mags.. for example if a publishing company has spent several thousand dollars on an add campaign in a mag, then it was understood that the review would be 'better'. I don't know if this has really changed, but I did notice that usually (and this is an opinion) the magazines that seemed to do this the most...at least give seemingly inflated reviews for a game that I found disappointing, or where others gave less favourable reviews, usually had an 'advertiser's index' showing where all the ads can be found. BTW I haven't baught a gaming mag in ages.

why is that weird? I was thinking along the lines of a 'bonus' mini campaign that would be triggered if you land on a planet and accept a certain mission.... for example a scenario involving hostage taking in an embassy or something and you have to assemble a squad to rescue some Galcom dignitaries or whatever the plot may be, but that it would be (not necessarily) essential to participate in a squad based series of missions to successfully resolve the issue in question. I have crazy ideas sometimes.
