Mildly entertaining if not irritating

quote: I can see the target ship's orientation in the VID, but there is no target ship's vector/velocity indicator. How fast IS that ship moving? If I turn on "match target speed", I can take a good guess on what the speed is, but it's ONLY A GUESS. And what happens when I don't want to match target speed? The closure rate and the Tacscan combine to give you this information. The TLL, TLD and VMI also provide various information in this regard. quote: I can see the enemy ship's range, and "closing" velocity (actually, it's "relative" velocity). But that's just a number. If I have to look at the VID to see the orientation, then it sorta defeats the purpose of having a HUD, doesn't it?When target's are BVR you should not be able to see their orientation as this bears no relevance to anything. The CVD/VID display is only there to provide useful information about the current target, whether its BVR or not. quote: Enemy's ship angle, velocity, and such, can probably be INFERRED from the TLD, but when the range is close enough, you can't SEE the TLD. Both ships are manuevering too wildly. The TLD's off the screen when the ship itself is still onscreen, thus no TLL, so you don't know where to aim! If the TLL/TLD are off-screen, then you shouldn't be shooting now, should you? quote: A target vector indicator of some sort will solve that.Thats what the TLD does and is more useful. You're asking for a pretty graphic display (ala IWar which is useless). Even the Flight Path Trails, to me, are pretty useless. quote: Suggestion: a flat triangle from the target ship pointing to the TLD. The shape and length of the triangle will show you how fast the enemy ship is moving and in that direction, as well as give you better reference point to aim.The TLD does that. Use it with a combination of the VMI. Also, if you have FPT enabled in CONFIG and you have the target locked up in STT mode, the FPT will be visible in the front view (as it does in the external camera and Tacops) quote: Originally posted by Kasey Chang: As for knowing the enemy speed, I want to know should I get in front of him or behind him... You don't need to know the target's speed in order to do that. The closure rate, match target speed give you an idea of its speedn. And the Tacscan tells you if its behind or in front of you. Read the manual. Yes, its in there. [ 07-22-2003, 08:26 AM: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]

Yeah, I've seen the trailer a few times at the movies. Its pretty cool. And I kinda like the working title better than the final one they went with. The former is kinda catchy I think.

LOL!!! tell me about it I moved the thread here just because, so far, two people have gotten themselves banned (though I already re-instated Mike113) over it. I figured we'd have more people to ban if they keep posting rubbish rather than the actual problem, if in fact there is one. And I don't even think there is. And even IF there is, I know for sure that Kendrick has nothing to do with it. If this was Resnig we were talking about, I'd be more cautious to stick up for him.

quote: Originally posted by Marvin: If an upgrade gets stuck at 99%, is the installation considered "completed" ... or will the primary system still be degraded? An upgrade never gets stuck. If it doesn't go to 100% then that means the value is too small to increment i.e. 99.5 won't be displayed as 100%. Basically if the system is Green its operational and the number is meaningless because 80% operational is just the same as 90%, 99% or 100%. Thats why I use ranges for the three different states (operational, slightly damaged, badly damaged, destroyed). There was a problem where it took too long to go to 100 from a fractional value and it was fixed in a previous patch. Check the VCF for it.

I'm not sure if any of you have been following this thread and this thread on GG. I have been following them closely and with curious amusements. Especially at Kasey's comments about the design of the game. Comments? Anyway Kasey, I am particularly surprised that you would say that a 2D deck display with dots showing personnel locations (my idea was to do something along the lines of display in Armageddon where they were moving through the station) would have added more to the game and would have been more valuable than the ability to crew any ship in the game. In fact, I am astonished but maybe I shouldn't be. Since this is your first BC game, I can probably see how you don't get why I did it this way. And also, that feature was never planned for any BC game before BCG. I dropped it [from BCG] for the reasons I already stated in the discussion here. Also, you said quote: It also lacks things that's MORE important in space combat... enemy ship orientation. In a real fighter HUD, there's a gauge/symbology that shows the enemy's velocity vector (direction and speed he's going) right on the HUD. There is NO SUCH information. You'd think that in space combat, knowing the enemy vector is MORE important, but no such thing. There are other strange lapses in features similar to this. I have NO idea wtf you're talking about. There are several methods for determining a ship's velocity, direction, angle etc etc. You'd have noticed no less than five places where this information is located (even the CVD/VID mode has some of it!) if you weren't busy trying to think of the game for what it isn't. And then you mention the flight path ladders in IWar. Which are nothing but useless eyecandy and which add NOTHING to the game. At the point I read that, I stopped taking you seriously because you simply can't be serious about some of what you wrote.

uhm, you are bringing a fleet with you, right?

Let me repeat this again so that nothing is missed in the interpretation. KENDRICK HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DAMAGE ON THE SHIP APART FROM HANDLING REPAIRS AND AUTO ASSIGNMENTS OF SYS ENGINEERS. AND DURING ANY/ALL SYS UPGRADES, THE PRIMARY SYSTEM WILL BE DEGRADED UNTIL THE INSTALLATION OF THE NEW ONE IS COMPLETED. ITS IN THE MANUAL.

How to destroy a star station... almost guaranteed
Supreme Cmdr replied to kschang's topic in General Discussions
quote: Originally posted by Kasey Chang: So a station can think of itself as "fully functional" even if its hull is down to 500 out of 25000... Hmmm... Well, why not? Just because you breached its armor by that amount, doesn't mean that you hit any of its critical systems. Think about it this way, what if it were your ship? Haven't you noticed that regardless of your armor level that its not the same systems that are damaged? quote: (The other integrities are down to 70 or even 50, but it was repaired back up to 99).Nothing wrong with that. Again - (are you NOT getting what I'm explaining?), the integrity is IRRELEVANT when it comes to shields etc. Just because the integrity is critical means NOTHING if the shield systems (you know, the thing that makes the shield work) are even fractionally operational. There is a good reason why when armor is breached it rarely gets fixed quickly, but shields do. With the shields being repaired and functional, other systems can be repaired because the shields will prevent further breaches - especially if the armor is severely breached. The AI tries to mimick a human player. I don't know about you, but I don't go repairing the flight deck or weapon systems when I have a shield breach to worry about. Do you? quote: I must be hitting the station at the wrong places. It DOES make a difference, right, SC? If this just keeps happening, should I try shooting at a different spot?Damage is evenly distributed amongst systems but it depends on the impact factor. There is no location based damage in the game. Bandus stated that incorrectly (when he said Try hitting a different spot) and must be thinking about the amount of damage applied. i.e. the greater the damage, the more systems that will be damaged. You can't, e.g. hit it from the back and assume that its going to disable its engines. Thats location based damage and its not supported. But hit it with a missle of factor 10 from the back and then one with factor 100, the latter missile will cause breaches to more systems - assuming the armor itself is breached. -
quote: Originally posted by LBM: - Another problem is on planets in FP mode. The Walk/Run [back Space] key does not work and also when I engage the jetpack I would just continue to fly up and there is nothing I can do to bring me back down again. Try reading the manual for both of these. The toggle is just that, a toggle. And when run is active, the text in the HUD will be in inverse video. For the jetpack....aw, just read the manual if you don't know how to decend manually. And if you are using an accelerated keyboard (e.g. typmatic rate very high), reduce it. It sounds like a keyboard problem to me. Besides, you've had this game for quite a while and if this is a new computer, well then. wrt your CDKEY, check your PM. If you have BCM and BCMG, just login to your profile and go into edit mode. Then change the product from BCM to BCMG and update the CDKEY as well. can not launch Hyperjump manually (BCMG)

Well that was quick. I personally (you're a trusted admin and your call is just as good as mine. so no worries there) won't have restricted Shadow's ability to post. At least not just yet. The rant just made me chuckle because it was just plain silly. And in all this, just a few days ago I reinstated Mike's ability to post (it was a temp ban, since he didn't do anything that warranted a perma-ban) but he STILL has not opened an official bug report with proof of what he's been arguing about. I just love it when I explain to people how I designed and developed my game and know EXACTLY what it can/cannot do - and they end up arguing and/or abusing me over it. Shadow obviously didn't even read the post I made describing under what circumstances random damage will occur. But no, lets blame Kendrick (or file corruption!!) - which is just the most ridiculous thing I've heard since 1996. I think we need to re-state the rules at some point because even when you ask people to produced proof and evidence of a problem - they don't. But they'd rather rave and rant about it.

How to destroy a star station... almost guaranteed
Supreme Cmdr replied to kschang's topic in General Discussions
quote: Originally posted by Kasey Chang: Then something's funny with the damage model. According to my readings on the type 5 I destroyed in Rinaal (?), ALL FOUR systems are at 99/100 %, with shields at 0 and hull at 200 or so. The shields keep going back up though. So any tricks in knocking down the integrity without wiping out the hull? There's nothing funny about it really - and its all explained in the manual. And I explained it in another one of your threads recently. Quite simply, the integrity is a combination of several critical systems. These are listed at the top of the target info in the CVD. The station won't emit an SOS unless it determines that its integrity level is critical and it has no further options (or inbound assistance). Which is exactly what it also does when it is sieged and runs out of supplies. Simply put, if you don't breach the shields, you can't breach the armor. If you don't breach the armor, then no crirical system damage will occur. And if no system damage occurs - incl none to the critical systems - then the integrity is unaffected. This is all explained in the manual. Try reading it. And just because its shields are going up means that, well, the engineers are busy. What exactly did you expect? -

Whats so special about the credits and what'd I miss? Like I need a reason to go see it again. -

Pretty interesting read. First time I've even heard of it. Thank God, at least I know I'm not that old.

ha!! first!!! If you liked the first one, you will love this one. Typical Simpson/Bruckheimer/Bay affair. Lots and lots of totally wild explosions and one of the most amazing car chase scenes since the Matrix. Though I think the part in the mortuary was overdone, too long and a bit over the top. WARNING: If you are action film averse (this goes double for you Race Bannon), do NOT go see this movie. At all. It is nothing but the prerequisite Summer romp 9.5/10 [ 08-06-2003, 05:35 AM: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
