  1. For some reason I get all sounds except for the com chatter on my new rig. I have done the following: Direct X 8.1 Latest WinXP updates. Latest Dell audio drivers for TBSC. (My audio card is not off the shelf retail, it came with the system) I tinkered with all settings and lowered acceleration one notch. I also went to TBeach's site and they said to dl Dell's drivers. Should I have used the TB one instead? I have the setting on two speaker system and have tried various volume settings, and used all ports in the back of the machine. Any suggestions? Cheers
  2. It actually gets so bad you get super paraniod. I had set a destination in my navitron and when the damn thing all of a sudden started flying in the wrong direction towards not so friendly territory in my little sunflash , not once, but twice in a row, until I landed in a raider/merc (somewhewre in Lennen I think) zone. I was convinced my bridge had been captured by intruders and franticlly went looking for the sob's. As it turned out my navigation officer was just a moron and I died right along with him shortly after. Those little buggers will take anything, come to think of it, where the hell are my car keys... Cheers
  3. Peace, both of you an a merry X-mas season. Friends sounds good. Cheers Gentleman
  4. Blades, I dont get the feeling Id be welcome (JJ). Thanks for the offer. However, I will wait and see what happens to Wrath fleet first.
  5. Blades, I am quite sure that you missed the general intent of my post, part of the reason may be that It got posted in this thread instead of where I intended it. My post as well was in response to the closing of the boards. It was not meant to be directed specifically to yourself until I reached the point where I mentioned your resignation was a shame. If I didnt value your opinion as a respected member of this forum I certainly wouldnt have made such a statement that I thought your leaving was a shame. You are correct on a number of points, I do not know all of the facts, nor do I claim to. I guess that I overstepped my bounds there with respect to assuming too much about your situation and the SC's . For that I apologize publicly. Right now for all to see. I hope that apology is accepted. I admit, I should have heeded my own advice about the facts a little better here. I never at any point intended to place the blame at your feet and my post states that. In fact it was meant as a defence to yourself so you would not get blamed by others. My intention was that we all should share the blame and remember that should we ever get another chance. As to your references to "squire" and "sit down" and the derogatroy use of "newbie" as opposed to your elite status. I will let those pass. You generally defend noobs, and I think we are all a little heated right now. You felt that I had wronged you personally, which was not my intention, and had I felt that someone had personally attacked me I may very well have reacted the same way. The final comment in my post was directed at newbies, of which I am one. We, newbs, need to toughen up a little (re: criticism from vets). It had nothng to do with yourself. Blades, I am not interested in getting into a flame war with you. I just finished decorating the tree with my daughter, life is too short, this is its christmas, it is only a game. I think we both misunderstood each other. Lets move on. The olive branch has been extended, has it been accepted? Cheers
  6. This is really a shame. I thought I had finally found a board where I could spend a few years wihthout losing interest. Thank you for sharing your posts gentlemen I lurked for 5 months before I posted, I will miss this forum, I actually had it running at work in and would check in regularly. As for the SC I guess you can only beat your head against a concrete wall for so long before you pass out. It's his forum, his rules, his decision. If he no longer enjoys it than we shouldn't expect him to run it. Maybe next time ,if he is generous enough, people will appreciate it more. If you support Epsilon you support a thief, bottom line. Your damn right I would ban him. Blades, your resignation is a shame. From what I have read you are a valuable member here and have garnered a lot of peoples respect. Your posts are well thought out in general and I imagine you are a fine commander. Your cause is noble but your direction a little misguided, how do you expect SC to feel but betrayed, you and SC apparently had a personal relationship and trust that was built up over time. You have cast that aside in the defence of the undefendable and then justify it by adding with respect to bannings "how many were unjustified?" when you have no knowledge that any were unjustified? I assume you would have posted that as well had you known. You were defending your fleet, that I respect, it is the people you were defending that was the problem. I truly do hope there was more rationale to your decision than that. I also question the need for you do to do so publicly. If you wanted to explain your resignation to your fleet members good idea, and in a private email to Derek, fine even better, but by posting it on HIS forum to tell him your reasons and air your dirty laundry in public questioning decisions that he alone, most likely, has all the facts on was an error. Derek owns this game , built this game, and supports this game, he created this forum for the fans so he could grow it with them. How may of you actually get to deal with a games creator on a consistent level, daily, and get know what he is thinking or where he stands on certain issues involving his game. Like him or not he is visible and accessable. We were very lucky in this forum and we all, not just Blades, Epsilon and Hamblin, toasted it gentlemen. It would be wrong and unfair to blame just those three. We will all now have to go to other forums but it will likely degrade over time into what every other forum has become. I am glad we still have fleet forums I think they will be our saviour for MP. And since this is likely one of my last posts here since we have limited time I will add this. If you cannot handle getting yelled at or corrected harshly when you make an dumb error or don't take the time to think before you speak then you better grow up or stay in your basement. It's a harsh world out there and your not ready for it. Cheers Gentlemen I will miss this forum greatly. My mistake gentlemen I though I posted this in the important anouncements thread.. mayeb someone can move it there. [ 12-16-2001: Message edited by: Oban ]
  7. Excellent news $ilk, Nothing puts your life more into perspective than children. Enjoy.
  8. I may not agree with alot of what he said, but I will give him full credit for showing up here after the fact, and even starting a thread with the full knowledge he would be blasted. It would have been very easy for him to dissappear. I would also like to commend the SC for showing considerable class and enforcing his own rules (re: flaming on the boards) even against someone who wrote what I consider to be a not so favourable review. Not alot of people would be able to do that with someone who had been critical of thier work. No I don't like the review, no I don't agree with it. However, I do have a little more respect for both the author and the developer based on this thread. Cheers
  9. Smileyman.. LMAO!!!!! .. that's great stuff..
  10. BOOBY TRAPPED !!! LOL I spent about 45 minutes restoring and trying to practice picking(tractoring) up an sos fighter and for the life of me the bugger kept blowing up. I thought it was my PTA's, I was also usually boarded shortly after, was this part of thier plan? Can they transport from their fighter into my ship as inturders? I assumed it was only capital ships that could do that.... sob's.. great AI by the way.
  11. I'm pretty sure you can get all that in the online appendix. Cheers

    Welcome

Welcome Ashspear , btw I like your quote... Good stuff. The best I couuld come up with was "has anyone seen my teeth", I figured i'd best leave that one out. Cheers
  14. Bless you my good man, Now my binder can be completed. Let us know when you update it. Cheers
  15. quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: Yeah, pretty spot on I think. Yours too. ...damn I feel older than my 38 yrs 38 Right on !!!! I finally found someone older than me around here (33). BTW SC....What are your system specs that you run BCM on. I was trying to locate your system specs so I could see what I would need to run the game seamlessly, when I ordered my new system... all I could come across was that mighty cute picture of you on your couch. Cheers
  16. Pen and Paper games will never die. I have been playing off and on for over 20 years since, I was 12,and they have the one element that computers dont have right now, even with MP, real first person human interaction using what is stil the most powerful tool available, your imagination. D&D, I still have all of my books the and all of the rules from the orginal edition on, Lead figures, modules and more sets of dice than I can imagine. I still play with my buddies but we have trouble getting together with all of us having children and pretty intensive work situation. We might now be programmers, doctors and lawyers, labourers, IT consultants etc. but when we pull up the chairs and warmup the dice we are still able to slip into those comfortable characters we have known for 20 years and after a shitty week at work, there is no substitute for that and I am not sure there ever will be. Computer games provide a similar very satisfying escape but you will always need a computer and that is both their draw and their downfall. It will always miss a little bit of that human element. Anyone can play a RP pen and paper game, only those with computers can play computer games. Someday I am sure this will change but by then my biggest concern will be finding my teeth in the morning. Cheers
  17. Definitely will be there.
  18. I have returned a lot of pretty games, I have never returned a good game. It's all about gameplay. Then again I guess you already know how I feel. Cheers Gentleman
  19. A good review all in all, I dont know about the "easy to hop in right away" claim, heh, maybe im just an old idiot, but i satyed in training mode for the first week before I tried roam. I am also a little confused about the graphics and sound, a lot of reviewers call them a sore spot. I really dont see what the problem is. It's space for God's sake how many ways can you render a star. I think more attention should be paid to the scale, Planets are planet size and look great, stations are station size. Take a walk on the outside of your ship near a planet and station and get some feel of this !!! The important thing is the feel , the graphics and sound within the scale of the game allow you to feel like you are in space. You know what I also like? I like the fact that sound's are muted in the background and seem to come from different angles, it lends to a sense of realism in where they are coming from. I like that for long periods of time its dead silent out there except for your com chatter. I don't need my cruiser to sound like a harley when I accclerate to full speed nor my main guns to sound like some new quake weapon. It's all about feel and scale, the main guns are how far from the enclosed bridge? Just take a look at your ship, how loud should they seem at around 200 yards. I think alot of these guys are missing the whole point of what Derek..er sorry... I mean SC created and intended here. You are not in a video arcade, you are commanding a starship. I dont know maybe im just too old but I need immersive gameplay and an atmosphere that rewards people who commit the time to experience all a game has to offer, (I'm still looking for Utopia...lol). BCM had all of these in spades, like no other game I have played, and I am still just scratching the surface of the game. I cant wait till I start FP'ing around planets etc. I cant wait for MP this is great stuff.. This is a game I will keep. Eye candy I dont need. I can load up any game for that. BTW I like the graphics and sound in BCM. They are appropriate not excessive, believe it or not subtlety is often more effective in creating a feel or atmosphere than excess be it either through auditory or visual cues. ( I dont suppose you ever been called subtle before SC have you??..) Sorry to rant here It's early and only my first cup of coffee. Cheers gentlemen

    Welcome

    Welcome aboard Commander.
  21. quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: As for the firing arc you mention, have you not seen how turrets work? I don't think you have or you won't be asking these questions. How do you think they can track and firing at a target constantly e.g. from left to right, as long as the target is still acquired and all the above params are fullfilled. Turrets are not on ships for glitz. I painstakingly, hand crafted each vector into each and every ship, using BCS. It wasn't easy and its not my idea of fun. You are correct SC being new, I have never stepped outside my ship to watch the operation of the turrets, I have usually spent it inside the bridge trying to master that area first and practice tracking with my main guns and missles, .. Last night I let her fight by herself, flew her straight into a few battles nice and slow, and watched as the turrets did their thing. I had no intention of demeaning the intention of your work, quite the contrary based on how detailed everything else is in this game, I assumed there more than first met the eye with the PTA's, Consider your point taken. Cheers [ 12-08-2001: Message edited by: Oban ]
  22. Gryphon Thanks good info, but I have one question, have you ever noticed a turret unable to fire in all of its 180 degree arc because of the structure of your ship? Cheers
  23. Hey Guys, I have scanned a few posts here and there in the topic but have found no real definite answer or maybe it hasnt been explored. I was wondering about Firing Arcs in BCM. Are they supported? Has anyone experimented with this theory. Or do they have no effect. I am talking mainly about the PTA system. For example the sunflash has 12 turrets. Is that just a nice feature which gives the ship more of an advantage in firepower for fighter escort duty or, is it a result of the squarish design and some sort of compensation for having some turrets blocked from firing in certaing arcs because of the ships structural design. Let us compare it to a Starwarrior for example which is long and lean but only has 8 turrets. Does this mean the ship has less firepower turret wise or does the structural design of the starwarrior allow its turrets more freedom of fire by not having the ships hull interfere as much with targeting enemy craft andmake its firepower better than it would seem at first blush. The reason I am asking is that a board game I used to play to exhaustion when I was younger was Star Fleet battles, alot of the tactics of that game were formed around firing arcs and ranges ( It has since been attempted on compuer in the form of Starfleet Command, which i helped beta, btw the game did not do the board game justice, dont but it). I was wondering if the same sort of consideration was given to Firing Arcs in this game.
  24. lol.. it was only time.... SC ..just be glad its not a Dr. Who Mod.. imagine a little phone booth flying through the BCM universe... or even worse does anyone remember "Space 1999" .. oh god i'm dating myself here. I would actually look forward to a B5 Mod since the B5 game got dropped. My wife even liked that show. Although SC doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would make it easy to tinker with his work so I suspect he may have created a few internal hurdles to discourage such mutations of his game. The again I could be wrong. Cheers
  25. Your not the only one that feels a little mad my friend I just did the same thing. My home system was going on 5 years, I'm not sure it would even play pong anymore !! Anyway I bought BCM and fired it on my wifes machine (laptop) and immediately got addicted. I think she then got worried about my new propensity for late night profanity and was afraid i'd heave her laptop out the window if BCM kicked me out of anymore games as a result of a sub par video setup. As of yesterday I just ordered a new system from Dell.. (business expense of course.. ahem). So your not the only member of this club. Here's hoping it arrives before xmas: P4 1.7 GHZ 512 MB PC800 RDRAM G3 Ti 200 19" Monitor TB SC sound card etc..etc. Hey SC are you getting some kind of kickback from all these hardware guys? BCM seems to inspire upgrades galore. Hell, They should at least send you some Christmas cards??
