If you want to test your internet security, go to GRC and click on the 'Shields UP!' link. Hint: If ShieldsUP! greets you by name or computer name (for example, "Greetings BC Online!"), then you really need to be worried about net security. [ 07-20-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

I don't hate it (at least not anymore). I've just read the entire VCF and I don't recall such a statement. The only reference to the transporter that I do recall is that cargo transfers between player crafts will be implemented in multiplayer. I just want to know if players can send marines to hostile NPC crafts.
-
What about ship-to-ship transport? I want to SEND some intruders for a change.
-
I just finished reading the entire VCF in one sitting; it took about five hours, I think. I thank you all for your helpful advice; reading the file is now much easier than it used to be. I'm cured!
-
OK. When I have time, I'll try reading the whole thing once. Time to face the fear.

One of the more common tech support responses in this forum (even more common than RTM and RTFM) is 'Read the VCF'. Usually, I have no problem with reading documentation, but the VCF is freaking me out a little. First of all, the document is 71 pages long ( ). Secondly, it's not printer-friendly. Finally, whenever I see the words "Read the VCF", there is no reference to a particular section. In other words, I have VCF Phobia, and I want to be cured. So, I'm going to ask a few questions; the answers should treat my ailment well enough (hopefully). Question 1: If I wanted to know whether a feature was up and running in a demo's kernel, would I need to search all preceding VCF entries for a mention about it? Question 2: What do all the colour codes indicate? Question 3: If I want to get a general idea of the current state of the game, which sections should I read (apart from the green stuff)?

I don't mean to be a nitpick...OK, maybe I do ( ), but this marketing strategy is nothing new. I think Sierra and Activision were among the first to use it. In any case, it's a great idea, both for BCM and for gaming in general. ['Aussie bloke' accent] Derek, good on ya, mate. ['Aussie bloke' accent off]

I managed to download the Chavik portrait with IE and convert it to JPEG. The pic is up and running. Unfortunately, the Sygan pics on the Balor Fleet website cannot be used because they're in GIF format (Active Worlds picture frames can only link to JPEGs).

I have a problem: The picture frames in the Secret Base are getting a lot of broken links. Apparently, Andergum's website at Firstworld is down (this is where I got most of the pics). As a result, most of the Fleet Leader portraits and Starstation pics have been replaced by snow static. I need new links to pictures of starstations Spectre, Destiny, New America, Sygan, and New Frontier. I also need new links to portraits of Chavik, Ballinger, and Rattler (for some unknown reason, the pics of Akira and Andergum are still accessible from Firstworld). Finally, I'm still waiting for replies to my previous questions (Have the Spectre and Eversor logos by Eclipse been officially accepted yet? Why does the Insurgent logo have a coffin in the background?)

quote: I just set the keyboard layout to US, so I'll see what happens now. Paddy, changing the keyboard layout has no effect on the way that computers read character input (unless you're pulling the keys out of their sockets and swapping them around, but that's ridiculous ). All IBM compatibles ('PC's) use the ASCII/IBM Extended Character Set. Each character has its own ASCII code. Even if the character keys were layed out differently, they still input the same 8 bit binary string.

quote: Regarding the 'sidekick' comment, I'm not sure. I hadn't really noticed Janeway and Seven working together all that much. Maybe not a 'sidekick', more of a 'straight foil', like Spock's logic to Kirk's chivalry, and Odo's sharp eye to Quark's swift hand. The semi-Borg Seven's deadpan rebelliousness was a 'straight foil' to Janeway's passionate resoluteness. quote: More often than not, Seven was just that little chewtoy that they got Chakotay to fool around with to draw interest in the show. I also noticed that as she 'regained her humanity' she became less and less like a normal person and much more, erm, estrogenesque. I've only seen the reruns that are broadcast in Australia, which are currently entering the 1998/99 season (no spoilers please ).

The Insurgent Secret Base has been expanded.
-
I have completed the expansions. The Secret Base is now twice its original size and features a launch bay with a shuttle and escort fighter (Yay! ). The shuttle is the new exit to the Commanders' Village (I never liked the teleporter). You can launch the escort fighter using the red button near my office and watch it through the viewport. Yippee!

quote: I also felt the same way about Seven of Nine. Pointless and demeaning. I think Seven of Nine was more than just a 'body' character. Before Jeri Ryan joined the cast, the show was lacking any particularly interesting relationships and the regular characters were being homogenized over time. The introduction of Seven of Nine allowed the writers to create the type of hero-sidekick relationship between Seven and Janeway that made the previous ST series more likeable (Kirk and Spock in TOS, Picard and Data in TNG).
-
Yay!
-
I have made some changes to the secret base. The base now has some personnel on duty, a cleaner picture of the Culpepper Flag, a revamped office for the Base Administrator (guess who? ), and a designated area for transporters. I'm planning a few expansions in the near future as well. For now, I need some links to the official fleet logos (have the new Spectre and Eversor logos by Eclipse been accepted yet?). BTW, why does the Insurgent logo have a coffin in the background? [ 07-08-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

Shingen, since you're a strategy buff, I recommend you try some of the turn based games by Chris Crawford. The following games are Freeware and available on the Underdogs site. 1. Balance of Power 2. Balance of Power 1990 Edition 3. The Global Dilemma: Guns or Butter 4. Balance of the Planet Crawford's game designs have a characteristic style: Minimal aesthetics, a high level of scope from a small number of features, and a simple interface working on complex mechanics.
