Instead of launching into a long winded post, let me just say that my entry into the BC scene was none too pretty even with my lurking because I came in with a bit of a chip on my shoulder. I came in intending to prove something to the community here. I proved that I had done extensive research on the subject and that I could be a complete knucklehead. That road leads to bruises! Yep. I remember that quite well. Thats why when some cry foul and go crying to mommy, I just smile. We've all had it, yes, even me (considering how much aggravation and beatings those b*astards gave me in the Beta forum).

  4. In a future patch update, I will implement code which has stations launch a pair of escorts for non-hostile careers. I also plan on implementing the ability to emit an SOS transponder so that a station can answer your distress call and send in re-inforcements. This is in my XP1 wish list, but I'll probably include it in a BCM patch. I realize that non-hostile castes are having a hard time out there. But until I come up with this and other solutions, stick close to your stations and ensure that you are no more than 1 or 2 jumps away from safety. And if you want to mine and roam around freely, go to the sub-regions of Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus. You'll have the entire regions to yourself. 6. LOL!!! Damn Tac, I was drinking when I read that.
  7. quote: Originally posted by Mindglow: I think he actually has a point, while most of the things that go on in the BCM universe can be tracked by floating points, there is alot of room for more impressive graphics. The game IS huge, and very impressive the way it juggles all that data, I'm not surprised that it crashes every 15 minutes. Not sure which game crashes every 15 mins. But its certainly not BCM. Besides, a game being developed by an indie shouldn't be judged by any different standards. A game is a game. If you want to compete with the big boys, you have to do just that: compete. Some bring advanced graphics and virtually zero gameplay, while others focus on gameplay and with graphics that get the job done. IMO (and from the countless emails I've received today), the graphics in BCM get the job done and they do NOT detract from the gameplay. One day, the graphics will peak at or close to the level of gameplay, then it won't matter. This game went into development almost two years ago, I'd be a complete idiot to keep moving the graphics goal post just because a bunch of sissies with the attention span of a gnat, want to flex their GF3. I checked the boards, and I only wound one reference to this sort of thing, and the person that posted never mentioned it again, so I did spend a lot of time reproducing it and trying different variables before I worked up the nerve to post. Many thanks for the time. If there is anything you think I should try before we rule out the possability of a wilde goose chase though, just let me know. LOL!! Damn that was a good disclaimer Anyway, am on it and will report when I have something on it. Its already logged in the VCF, which means its worth looking into.
  9. quote: Originally posted by actrade: Also had something strange happend that the SC may want to be aware of, even though it may be a wild goose chase If there ever was one, that would be it. And I moved the file over to FP because of the sheer bandwidth you guys are chewing up here. Its bad enough that I just forked out hard moola to move the site to a new server, only to find that the bandwidth (30GB a month) is blown in less than two weeks!! Not in BCM, but possibly in one of the XP add-ons. btw, newbies, now you have your own forum, there is no need to constrain postings to this single thread. Just refrain from creating duplicates please.
  11. OK, new forum is created and I've moved some topics in here. Yeah, I forgot to close the board when creating the new forum and moving the threads. Usually, when I close the board, I get a bunch of emails from folks panicking. Damn, this place is like a drug habit.
  12. quote: Originally posted by Kush: I know for a fact Derek never gets personal. (Cranky perhaps, never personal.) heh, yep. Especially if I'm on my umpteenth cuppa quote: I think for the most part we're doing much better, and I think it's fair to raise your concerns, but I like that this site is practically Troll free. I want to keep it that way. And at the same time, Newbs should feel free to ask a question that they haven't found the answer for in the manual, or the FAQ or the search engine. (What that question might be, well, I don't know ) Yep quote: And I also think that there should be a special Forum, just for Newbies, Called Newbie's Corner, or something. A place that basically takes all the Newbie Questions out of all the other threads and puts them in one place. There'll be alot of RTFM's, but there'll also be less RTFM's in other Forums. Good idea, because it seems like a single thread isn't going to hold them. OK, will setup a new forum today. [ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
  13. I want Hamblin out of Orion and off my board effective immediately. This not the first time he's being banned from here - and later re-instated. This time, he's gone for good. Anyone who wants to question my decision after reading this, can follow him. That is all. [ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
  14. Quite a good rump - but only if you like the stars and Sodderberg's (sp) work (Out of Sight, Traffic etc). 8/10

  17. quote: Originally posted by Schmendrick: But maybe after I've played a single game for a week or two the AI will start getting good enough to give me a challenge. Maybe an option to set the starting average computer AI level would be usefull. [ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: Schmendrick ] Can't. Its dynamic and is updated over time.
  18. quote: Originally posted by Gamaliel: I like the way your pictures tell a story, LOL. You know, I was just thinking the same thing!! Heck, if this keeps up, I'll have Justin create a link on the main site (like the Fleets link) and host all user screens there.
  19. quote: Originally posted by Barron Morris: here is mine, lets see yours......screen shots Damn, those Valkeries are mean.
  20. quote: Originally posted by Sadistic: Yeah, SC, there really should be a way to select a bunch of personell at a time to order them instead of having to go thru and select every single guy individually. There is no way to do that due to how the interface works.
  21. quote: Originally posted by Cmdr Jeffery Eu: Hmm, getting a bit wound up aren't you? hehe, I was just thinking the same thing.
  22. quote: Originally posted by Barron Morris: thank god, I hate em If you are talking about the cut-scenes, yes, I hate them too. Every staunch BC member knows my stance on doing cut-scenes in my game. Never gonna do them. Ever. Besides, those things only work when you have a single-branch, rail-based shooter or game. Try doing a multi-branche game, with a plethora of possible outcomes, and see how many different cut-scenes have to be done for each possible outcome.
  23. quote: Originally posted by Thermidor: [QBHa! Someone is using Falcon 4.0 as an example? Are you not aware that support of Falcon was dropped before it was fully playable due to the fact that it was too complex and the publisher decided it wasn't worth the effort? BCM is doing a lot more behind the scenes than Falcon ever did. Freespace2 doesn't have much going on behind the scenes at all which is why it can look pretty. From what you have stated it's apparent that you haven't even played BCM.[/QB] Falcon can't even handle a single scenario (Korea) during a campaign, let alone a massive planet and space world. I guess he must have missed all those discussions on optimization and tweaks for the Falcom engagement bubble. Much of which were done post-release, by the Falcon community (iBeta, eFalcon etc). Falcon 4. Pah! Drew must not think that there are Falcon 4 drivers around here. Heh, in fact, I was playing it just this Friday with some guys online.
  24. quote: Originally posted by vogelap: Thermidor opens mouth, inserts foot: OK. Until you apologize to him via email, and cc me on it, you're no longer allowed to post. And if I don't see the email by midnight, I'm killing your profile. I've said this before, I don't care WHO you are or how long you've been around, flaming or any such action on THIS board, is NOT allowed. [ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]

Ever. quote: Reading Derek's soapbox on this topic, especially the section of it that talks about bringing a machine to its knees with too many crafts on screen, my only thought was "OPTIMIZE THE CODE!". Heck, if Freespace 2 can have massive battles without impacting framerate, I'm sure BCM can be tweaked to do the same. Falcon 4 is every bit as complex a game as BCM, and it's got very nice graphics and detail. Are you f!cking kidding me?!?!? You've GOT to be kidding me!! You want to compare Freespace's rendering of a single confined region, and piss-poor NPC AI to BCM's world processing??? Are we having a discussion or is this a piss take? Just because the game has high-end requirements means it needs to be optimized? What?!?! I just love it when every gamer with a mouse thinks he knows what programming is all about. Please stay on topic or don't participate at all. [ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
