phew!, that about clears that up I think. Thanks! As for graphics, don't worry about that. Use placeholders for now and once I OK the design proposal, I'll commission them. Tac has some landlubbers in his crew who are good at web graphics.

Ron's right, forget about them not covering 1/4th of the book, they left out a lot of things. Man, I can't believe the author allowed them to rip it up like that. And people wonder why am so protective of my stuff. For one thing, there is nothing in this movie that makes you want to pull for anyone. Frankly, I liked Travolta's performance better and the film kinda fell flat for me, when he wasn't on screen. There is nothing awe inspiring about this movie. If you remember Independence Day, now thats awe inspiring, especially the end battle when all the world's heroes went up in F18 fighters to take out the alien ships. When Bill Pullman was giving his battle speech, it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! I mean, these guys, from the caves (in BE), learned how to fly AVB Harrier jump jets in 7 days, from a simulator!!! And when you see them attacking the dome, you'd think that they were carrier aviators. Absolutely and totally, ludicrous. I was just waiting for the aliens to show up with some kick-ass weaponry and wipe those Harriers out. Nothing. As for Kelly, I guess she wanted to be in the movie.

Questions about mining, cargo, fatigue
Supreme Cmdr replied to Dusty Waters's topic in Battlecruiser Series
Well, don't forget that you have stuff in the transporter. It is a bi-directional system. When it is activated from TacOPS, anything in it, gets transported. So, if you have a stash in there and you forget. Then you do and deploy some marines to a planet using the transporter, you may end up with a cargo pod on the surface, containing your stash. Then again, you could just vaporize everything and a cargo pod won't get created. -
The repair time for ODS systems is 480 mins. And you don't have to finish it off for it to be rebuilt. But, if you don't want to see the SOS emitter, then, finish it off.

The Summer's first dud. Unless, like me, you're a fan of John Travolta and/or Barry Pepper, you will want to miss this. Think... ..Godzilla ...Wing Commander with better acting ....SuperNova .....Wild Wild West ......a half-eaten ham sandwich...2 days after you made it. Yes, boys and gals, they ****ed it up. Apart from the fact that it only covers half the book, this is one sequel that won't be made I don't think. But there's hope, MI-2 and X-Men are on the way!

Steve quote: Sorry Derek, this seems to merely be a discussion between myself and Steve Then you guys take it to email or create another thread. This thread is only for the discussion as it pertains to this site's roster and Antilles task at hand. I have subsequently deleted all non-related posts from this thread. The only posts that I want to see, including design specs, suggestions etc, should only pertain to this topic. quote: Since the thread was silent for a few days, I offered to generate a prototype database in case someone else was interested in prototyping a front-end. If this isn't going where you want it to, then I will graciously step back. If I am confused as to the intent (which was not apparent in any of your posts until this one), what makes you think anyone else understand what you are trying to achieve? I have seen no indication that you are working with Antilles on this and I see no evidence of collaboration of same. With that, I can only conclude that this is going to turn into another farce that carries on for weeks, everyone tugging in different directions; and in the end, I have to step in and sort it out. So, if you are collaborating with Antilles, I need to hear this from him and not you. I would also like to know what this collaboration entails. Your system, DBMS or not, is useless in the general scheme of things because it is unuseable in the scope of the task at hand and will only lead to the confusion that is now ensuing. Until Antilles informs me that he is in the least interested in whatever it is you guys are doing, I do not want to see it in this thread. Thanks for the effort but I simply do not have the time to babysit this mess. And if that Roster is not up and running by June, in some form or another, I will have someone else do it. I won't forget the downtime that would be caused and anyone associated with it, can kiss any chances of getting anywhere near the upcoming BCM Beta test, goodbye. The first time those in question ever see it, will be when they buy it from a store. That is all. [This message has been edited by Supreme Cmdr (edited 05-13-2000).]

Dunno what Steve's doing with a DBMS system, but this was supposed to be Antilles' gig. So, can someone tell me wtf is going on? Or is this one of these tasks where I have to take control and hire someone competent enough to actually pull it off? No offense, but BCM is due out soon, and so far, you ladies are just screwing around with this. And yes, the site is on a Unix box running mySQL and PHP3.

OK, I have restored the RPG forum. If you guys posted anything after the site was moved, its all lost. Sorry. However, I didn't notice anything particularly interesting in the past few days anyway, so, hopefully the older stuff is more valuable.
-
I will be restoring the RPG forum data sometime this weekend.
-
By running the game
-
I think I kept the RP forum up to 140 days.
-
Sendmail is working again I pruned the forum, deleted messages older than 120 days (in some forums only, others were 30 days etc) and rescued 75MB of disk space!!

Any race/caste can command any ship/vehicle. I'm not going to start placing restrictions on that. The only thing I'm thinking about is that in multiplayer, you can't just have everyone log on and grab a Stormcarrier. So, I'm going to make it based on EPs and rank, so, no matter what asset your station has, if you're not the proper rank and have the the required EPs, they won't let you take certain ships. So, you could grab a MK3 battlecruiser and go rampaging until you get promoted or something, and then go back to your base and grab a Stormcarrier if there is one available. There will be a fixed number of assets at each station/base. Of course, if you can't find one at your base or you are not the proper rank etc, you can always go jack one from some hapless player or NPC, but thats for GCO, not BCM.

Thats not what it means Steve

I don't have a clue how I'm going to do it. I had planned to have the master server here at 3000ad.com and then have all servers (assuming I let people setup their own servers, instead of using Heat exclusively) report to it, but I'm undecided as to how to actually handle the ranking. Like Ron said, having it done in real-time will probably have its drawbacks. Right now, all I'm interested in are player name, handle, kills, rank, location. The real question is, how often to update the ranking. Maybe weekly?
-
quote: DS: Are you saying that the stats will be based on persistent play. If I die at anytime, I drop to the bottom of the list? Wow, talk about pressure to perform. Is it likely that any player will last long enough for persitent stats to be accurate for ranking? Highest number of kills i can understand. It's a simple way of determining the king of the hill. However, if your ranking drops everytime a newbie gets a lucky shot, the king of the hill will change on a minute by minute basis as the person on top will end up on the bottom every time he/she plays. Anyway, this is a discussion of another thread possibly...? This is for a whole other thread. Frankly, I don't have a clue how I'm going to do it yet.
-
OK, I've changed it for all fleet forums. Good luck.
-
I made it so that only moderators/admins, can post topics. So, if you guys want me to change it back, so that anyone can create topics, let me know.
-
yeah, I think the path to Sendmail is wrong. I've just changed it. Hope it works now.
-
I'm not interested in death vs kill ratios. And I'm certainly not going to use player side records which can be hacked.
-
quote: a: number of kills in online matches but only if there was a way to grab the info from the server independant of the user b: online mp ranking (based on number of kills; kills per minute; shots hit vs. shots missed; etc. Ron I will have Nick (the mp engine architect) put in support for stats checking. I can then pipe out number of kills and mp ranking only. Nothing else. However, for that to work, they players on a mp server will have to ensure that their player ID that they log on with, matches the roster entry or it won't update it. And of course if somone gets killed, the records would be reset. I have forgotten how other games, eg PXO over at Freespace, handle this, but I'm sure that it is not persistent. I went to see Gladiator. We left after the first hour. Right when he was about to enter the arena for the first time. As soon as the door opened and one of them got his head bashed in, and a whole pool of blood emerged, I got smacked and we had to leave. I would have left anyway, but not particularly at that point. We ended up seeing Gossip. Go figure. I have to say that I don't particularly have a stomach for gory movies that are over the top, for that reason, what I saw of Gladiator makes it a movie I don't want to see. As for Private Ryan, after the first beach battle scene, I left. Movies don't have to be violent for them to be fun, but I guess in the case of Private Ryan, it was a necessary evil. However, when Spartacus was made, it became an instant classic without any of the gory details that Gladiator seems to excel at. I'll never see Gladiator. I liked everything else about it, apart from Russel Crowe being one of my fav actors. I just don't like the violent nature and the graphic depiction of same. They could have toned it down a bit. But, it took home $32m in its opening weekend, and I doubt that MI-2 will even top that. The movie is absolutely and unecessarily graphic and every review has pointed this out. Thats my take.

Thats it! I'm off to see it then.

Fixed!
