Make sure your friend teaches you how to use the programs he will undoubtably install on your computer to minimize things like this.
  2. quote:Originally posted by Remo Williams: Prime will take heavy losses to get the job done due to their overwhelming numbers in combat. Hey, that wasn't in my contract.
  3. About Membership: In the military, you can join the Marines, or the Air Force, or Navy, or Army, or whatever. But you do not get to specify the squadron, or wing, or fleet, etc. You join "at the convenience of ..." and live with it. Granted, sometimes you can request a preference. A specific job, or aircraft, or location. But, in the end, what you get is what is needed by the military. Back in '76, just about everyone who graduated from Nav school wanted to be assigned to the back seat of an F-4. If the Air Force had allowed TAC to take all who wanted to go, there would've been a whole lot of tankers and C-130s wandering the skies, totally lost. So, having a quota system isn't such an outlandish idea. Personally, I'd prefer otherwise ... because even Prime can have its problems with "retention rates." About Roles: I can't think of anything else other than "offensive," "defensive," and "intelligence." Prime has always been offensive ... some might claim such is the case in more ways than one. But, be that as it may, if an FC feels uncomfortable in a "frontline" role, then we can always define, in each scenario, who does what. Especially since, right now, we are playing as a mixed bag, anyway. Example: In Gordon's original scenario, it would be Prime's job to take out the enemy shuttle; a member of one of the other GalCom fleets would try to protect our own SC. Personally, I think someone like, for instance, Ben could make better use of his talents out front ... but, if "defense" is what his fleet is supposed to do .... Intel personnel could be the guys piloting an SC in a scenario where other players escort the shuttle. If not Intel, then anyone assigned to a fleet that's normally in a support role. Whatever.
  4. Specialized Fleet Roles Offensive: The guys who go out and attack in other regions of space. Prime Fleet should be offensive. Defensive: The guys who babysit the home front. In most scenarios, these guys will see as much action as the offensive players. Logistix: The guys who work before and after the fleet match. These are the guys who would do the coordinating, score-keeping, and posting of stats ... stuff currently being done by Remo. ISS could do this ... along with some Intel collecting that still needs to be done.
  5. quote:Originally posted by Ben Zwycky: ...but if cap ships can't use PTA, wouldn't fighters have a massive advantage? Yes. Anybody who thinks otherwise needs to go back to single-player and try taking out a fleet of fighters ... without employing the PTA and making good use of its sweet spots.
  6. quote:Originally posted by Remo Williams: Well I see we have a difference of opinion on this ....Not much, if any. I'll explain the rationale ... either in a PM at Prime or in the usual section at the Insurgent forum.
  7. You guys remind me of cavalry officers wondering what to do when horses no longer became a rational option in a war. The SC had the right idea ... fleet leaders should develop scenarios where shuttles or other "defendable" objects can be stashed in or near more than one planet or starstation. Each faction would be required to defend an assigned area ... and that area could be permanent. We could also have allotments ... each fleet being assigned a specific number of members. Once a fleet meets its quota, new applicants must look elsewhere. About Shin's "we" ... Any time the SC wants to create a stand-alone that saves game stats, I'm all over it. For me, that would be primo number one selling point for multiplayer ... the best reason to log on and stay on day after day after day ... leastwise, until I've upgraded the Asimov to the hilt ... making it unbeatable in combat (thanks, in part, to a well-trained, high-AI crew). But I digress. Just as the horse soldiers came up with a new mission to fit the 20th century military, ISS and other fleets must come up with missions to fit MP. Depending on the restrictions (ROE), more than six players can get into a fleet match at one time ... allowing Prime to defend Procon while other GalCom fleets defend other areas of space. Yup. Put the horses out to pasture and find yourself an OC. And stop by the Alpha Wing Bar on your way out.
  8. Check this out at the new Prime Fleet forum. It's one of the reasons Remo is asking new recruits about their intentions and capabilities.
  9. Fine with me, either way.
  10. Howi, Before applying for a slot at the Academy, go to the Prime Fleet forum and check it out. Check out, especially, the Academy section ... you'll find a link there to the Academy page of the Prime website. Download the training manual. After you look through the manual and are absolutley certain you can complete the entire thing in six weeks or less, send an email to: [*][email protected] If you apply and then don't complete the assignments on time ... for any reason ... you're likely to be dropped from Prime's roster ... forever.
  11. Guys, Check the Prime Fleet forum early next week for some realignment of the organization. We are splitting the fleet into two wings ... one primarily for MP and the other for R/P.
  12. quote:Originally posted by Cruis. In: ... we jumped off onto grass, i thought this was understood... not cement, or ground... No guts, no glory.
  13. quote:Originally posted by Remo Williams: No one else will be allowed on the fleet server during the test match except of course the SC. I'll be in the Lobby, though, to sit in on both the brief and debrief.
  14. Will you also need FPS? If so, should it be taken when viewing front screen ... with HUD/bridge graphics visible?
  15. Maybe Prime needs a MP wing and a R/P wing. Role-playing doesn't require much in terms of coordinating times, days, scenarios, or ROE so it should pretty much take care of itself. The only MP requirement for members of the R/P wing would be as concerns the Academy. But, since all the Academy assignments can be done by the cadet any time or day (as long as a server is available), it shouldn't be that hard of an accomplishment. Check rides can be conducted by any senior officer ... including Most (in Japan) or Papi (in Europe) ... allowing the necessary flexability. That's my two. And Cadet Cox: Some time tomorrow (Saturday), check Prime Fleet's forum for your first assignment. Do not miss the completion date.
  16. What was really cool was having the swings in a sand pit with a concrete walkway ten feet away. With another sand pit on the other side. Object was to make it into the second sand pit. Nasty if you hit the concrete ... especially if it had sand all over it. Whupp. Or ejected from the swing at too high a trajectory ... bad on the shins when you hit the edge of the concrete. Life was a lot more fun before the Consumer Protection Agency came into its own. A box of Cracker Jack was worth the five cents.
  17. Kal, All the matches are on Sundays. Specifically because most people don't work on Sunday ... except, of course, around the house and in the yard, etc. Papi, You can't go. Leastwise not until you bring in that shipment of chili nuts you promised.
  18. quote:Originally posted by Shingen: RP would be nice, but it's also more time consuming then a few hours playing a match. Time consuming? It took me a half-hour just to read this one thread ... and I'm talking about just the stuff that was posted today! Who has time to read ... let alone write ... for R/P? quote:Originally posted by the SC: At the very least, fleet membership should be like being in the National Guard; you gotta show up once in a while .... I wouldn't touch that line with a ten foot pole.
  19. quote:Originally posted by Zane Marlowe: Something Ben Z. put together might work better, namely that prestige and ranking within the fleet is dependent on MP performance ... we currently have a standing incentive for any ISS commander who gets 4 kills that they will get promoted to Wing Leader of Defense Wing. I like that idea. Except, of course, I doubt someone would get promoted while playing for the enemy. Which, if I read the SC correctly, is no longer an option ... guess Chavik will be forced to battle GalCom all by himself ... either one fleet at a time or all at once. Shin, likewise. Maybe all GalCom commanders can get together, though, and agree to accept intra-fleet kills for promotion. It would mean some big-time realignments at Prime. Unless, of course, Remo sets aside a few high-ranking positions for our role-playing members.
  20. The one problem I see (as a GalCom commander who would've played Insurgent for the second time had Norton 2005 allowed it): playing as a substitute hampers tactical ops. Who wants to brief tactics for a mission when the guy(s) you're briefing will probably be playing for the other team in a couple weeks?
  21. The planetside shuttle scenario was developed for when the sides are uneven and/or more than two sides want to play at once. It allows two sides to work together without actually being on the same team. The problem with it isn't so much that every kill must be manually inserted into chat (blind entry) ... we do that already with the original shuttle scenario ... as it is with problems normally associated with planetside MP activity. We didn't do the planetside scenario last meeting because GalCom outnumbered the hostiles by too large a margin. It works better if the total number of players is small (e.g. 2 x GalCom, 1 x insurgent, 1 x raider). With larger numbers and more even sides, either "shuttle escort" or "shuttle slam" work out better. Last time, the escort misson worked out pretty well ... except I can't remember which zones we used for home bases. Also, I think it would be better if killing one of the escorted shuttles wasn't the only objective. If I remember correctly, the ROE for both missions are posted at Sho's forum.
  22. The original series often used the same actor in different roles (the most obvious being Mark Leonard as the Romulan commander, in "Balance of Terror," and then his long run as Spock's father) but I couldn't believe they'd try it with a main character from Next Generation. What a surprise to discover they'd decided to do a prequel with Data's papa (or grandpapa ... not sure if the timing is correct). I'm still wondering if, somehow, Khan will make an appearance in part two.
  23. Different craft have different detection ranges. A carrier will detect almost any object if it is in space and in the same zone whereas a transport won't detect an object until it is much closer. e.g. code:[dynamic] terran diplomat,,dipt1,lrt10.3d,DIP-001 [ai] dipt1,100,100,100,100,100,100,0 start inactive near genesis 100 jmp-10 stop events 102 !begin_tod1m2 activate this !detect player escort player ON endeventsIf the player enters earth zone from any of the normal gates or launches from GalCom HQ, the "activated" LRT-10 will ignore the "escort" command. Not until the player jumps toward Genesis will "escort" be activated. Also, if you use random AI (like in the example), you're less likely to get the behavior you expect. Note: for more precise control over your NPCs, make good use of the "!tod*m*tick" command. Edit: quote:Originally posted by Joaquin: !detect bc patrol cloak on attack bc reenable,9 Also, even if your NPC is within detection range, your script probably has conflicting commands. Try putting the "patrol" command under "!begin_..." to have it start out patrolling the area. Or, if it enters the area from another zone, try putting it under the "!arrived..." command. That way, it shouldn't revert back to patrolling, even if it loses contact with the player. If anything, it will simply remain on station after the player jumps out of detection range. 24. I watch 'em both. And Smallville to boot. But, I gotta admit, the occassional sidebar on Andromeda (e.g. Dylan pulling that sword and long-haired wig out of his "hidden" compartment) put it at the top of my list.
