I am aware of the shield/engine/reactor sort of upgrades that can be done along with the artifacts, however I am curious from a trader point of view. Can my unarmed transport be drinking milk and one day be sprouting point defence weapons, missles and anti-ship weapons? Or because it is unarmed it will forever be known as such? Do any vessels have the ability to upgrade from big guns/no guns to even bigger guns? Nope, once a duck always a duck. The only upgrades are shileds/engines/reactors/armor and artifacts.
  2. quote:Originally posted by InversionTheory: During install, I receive the "Error 1311: Source file not found F:Data.Cab. Verify that the source files exists and that you can access it". Make sure you've disabled all virus software during install as they are guaranteed to cause problems during the install. If you are paranoid about the cd containing a virus (which it doesn't) scan it before installing and scan your system immediately after. Oh wait, it does contain a mutant strain of the "What day is it?" virus where you suddenly seem to lose days at a time from your life! PS...the reason virus scanners cause problems is that data.cab is immense and on-access virus scanners (real time scanners) try to read the whole file before allowing your system to interact with it. The delay is so long that the setup program times out. Hence Verify . . . that you can access it [ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: Tyrn ]
  3. quote:Originally posted by Clan_Elemental: I myself have tried trader, explorer and even diplomet and I huddle in SOL system behind the skirt of moma galcom and yet still I find myself getting destroyed over and over by what I assume to be raiders while I am trying to go do some mining. Meanwhile I assume the military/police are eating donuts and watching the fireworks. [snip] Oh and can someone explain what governs an SOS ship being present... I found it really odd to learn the terran homeworld did not have an SOS ship handy. Visit the moons of Jupiter, I hear they're very quite this time of year. Only certain castes provide towing services and if GALCOM jumped in it would be bad for the local economy. If no towing services are currently in the region then you have to wait. 4. quote:Originally posted by AshSpear: I also have a problem: Is there a trick to laying leech mines?Crab mines work perfeclty, but when ever I deploy a leech mine it spins around in a circle on the radar screen until I try to move off, at which point it seems to follow alone behind me. If I stop a little further off, and try to deploy a second leech mine a hole gets blown in my ship. Am I the only one with this problem? Is there anything I could be doing wrong? Use your VTOL and head “UP” as you deploy the leeches.
  5. quote:Originally posted by Mr_Paris: I was thinking , i have read a lot of posts flaming the newbie , for little newbie type acts , and i think we have been getting a bit of a bashing of late so i think we need to have a "be nice to the newbie day". “All right cadets, note the airlock to your immediate left. You will also note that all the old timers around here are always suited up for vacuum exposure. This is not for fashion purposes.” It used to be common practice to actually read a forum/newsgroup for a period of time before actually posting. Lurkers always do better than the wet behind the ears n00b. Why? Because lurkers know the personality of the forum/newsgroup and so will hopefully use what they've observed to their best advantage. N00bs that do not follow this practice learn the hard way and rightly so. This entire concept was commonly known as Netiquette and was, at one time, basically required knowledge for any Internet user. Although most new users are unacquainted with it, Netiquette still reigns supreme because it accurately describes the workings of most online communities. If someone were flamed here they would be throughly scortch and be quite indistinguishable from charcoal. That being said, I've never seen anyone actually flamed or bashed here. I've seen plenty of people warned or reprimanded (even old timers) for not holding to the line when posting and there's occasionally the poster that refuses to acknowledge such warnings. Such posters are very short lived here and for good reason. The net result? A chance to interact directly with the developer, something which even beta testers rarely experience on other projects of this magnitude. At best other companies operate on the “don't call us, we'll call you” principle. [ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: Tyrn ]
  6. quote:Originally posted by Cmdr Nova: I think Quick Save updates your "Resume" data. You can just click resume on the main menu to go back.... Quick Save is one of those things to do, just incase of a crash. Remember that the "Resume" data is changed if you use another file, or start a new regular game. (IA/TA excluded, obviously) Quick save updates the profile and quick save, save & exit and simply quiting all update the data used when you click resume. When you go to the restore dialog you have a column for profiles and a column for named saves associated with a specific profile. If you just click on the profile and do not select a named save and restore, you are using the quick save data. If you click on a named game and restore, you're using using data saved using save & exit.

  10. quote:Originally posted by Gustavo: hey guys, thanks.... My auxiliary support life was off to save energy (I was low on it). What stupid I am. I thought that the main support would be enought. Gee.... Each unit services different parts of the ship, for everyone to stay happy both need to be running but you know that now.
  11. quote:Originally posted by Tac: Hah, he got the niccotine crew Take personnel OFF DUTY and make sure they stay that way. Sometimes some blockheaded officer will order them back. So order the officers off duty first. For best results, take officers off duty first and then the rest of the crew when you dock on a station. My guys never go ever 12% fatigue this way. I likes to ride 'em rough. The more time off duty the more time their AI is not increasing - learned that one the hard way in BC3K. They're smart enough to go off duty when they're ready to fall over and if I need them after that, I simply wake them up.
  12. quote:Originally posted by DeBoNed: You can target the drone, but I could not find out the bearings or the region on the map the drone is located. I got the shuttle to fly to the location of the drone by assigning a waypoint command to retrieve the drone, but I did not tie in the waypoint to any location on the map. The route consisted on only one waypoint, and the shuttle did fly to the drone's location, but did not pick up the drone, probably because, as TAC suggested, my shuttle already had a drone. It would be more interesting if you could see the location of your planet side vehicles on the topographic map. Another suggestion is to be able to assign commands to a drone, or, if the drone is fully automated, when a shuttle is ordered to pick up the drone, the drone would automatically drive itself to the drop off point or stop in place, awaiting the shuttle pickup. When the shuttle was on it's way to pickup the drone, as it entered the atmosphere, it descended at a snail's pace. It was descending at around 5 mph at 5000 unit height, (can't remember the units of height in the game). Could this be due to the fact that there was a drone in the shuttle and there was a bit of a command conflict? Low pilot AI? Would having two crewmembers in the shuttle make the shuttle fly ÔÇ£betterÔÇØ? It is possible that the shuttle picked up the wrong drone. The drones are numbered 1-4 but there is no way to know for sure which drone is which unless you are in the shuttle and use the target drone X command or you remember the general vacinity where each drone was placed. TACOPS displays the drones without id numbers.
  13. quote:Originally posted by Schmendrick: I started a new game in a Warmonger. I give the CC orders to escort Galcom HQ and I take off in a shuttle to do some trading. I was really lucky this game, Galcom HQ had ~900 Deflector shields and ~400 FPI-PSUs I could make billions with this! After about an hour of trading, I've accumulated about 54 million. A Violin and a pair of fighters had entered the system a short while ago and were attacking a friendly Garid. Seeing that the Garid isn't doing very well, I order my CC to attack the Violin while I do one more trade run to Genesis(yes, I know that was stupid). The good news is that the violin and one of the fighters were destroyed, and the other fighter ran away. The bad news is that the Garid was also destroyed, and my CC was disabled. I order my second shuttle, which was out cargo sweeping and towing disabled craft, to tow my CC back to Galcom HQ. I do my trading at Genesis and head back to Galcom to see how my CC is doing. Unfortunately, I was unable to dock with my CC. I need to get my CC docked with Galcom, so I tried ordering my second shuttle to deliver the CC to Galcom HQ. That didn't work. I tried towing my CC myself and docking. That didn't work either. So my question is, Am I completely screwed? I can't figure out how to get my CC repaired, or how to get back on it for that matter. Alt-E from the shuttle and Alt-D into the CC and pray you can dock with HQ.

  15. quote:Originally posted by ooJAYoo: Quick question, Can other craft follow you down to the planet/moon surface? I just havnt seen a single aircraft apart from my own thats all. If I was being persued by the enemy would they follow? Try following an NPC to the surface and you'll find your answer. As to seeing surface craft, try flying near enemy surface structures and see what happens.

  17. quote:Originally posted by Gustavo: Thanks guys,....but I still have problems when my SC tows a disabled ship. I cannot dock a SC that is towing a ship. So, I have to release it firts than use my tractor beam. I will try the Halt command. The RTB command doesnt work becouse the SC cannot dock :|. thanks for helping, but I'll not try to cool my hull going underwater. Clever..... Give your SC a deliver to order.

  19. quote:Originally posted by Tac: I for once think that shuttles should be slow when towing something. The bigger the slower. The energy that tractor beam has to use to tow a stormcarrier should drain its engine power. I like it!. Wish the same rule was applied to the CC's. I can tow a supercarrier with my lil' starwarrior and zip around at top speed. Slower, yes...everyone agrees that's always been the biggest exploit (along with mining drones, I know) and who isn't "guilty" of using it? The trick will be striking a balance between slow tow and tow my butt back to port. That is, of course, if SC decides that shuttles should even be able to tow a CC effectively at all. It is his vision of the universe after all. [ 12-07-2001: Message edited by: Tyrn ]
  20. quote:Originally posted by Slag Head: Finally, I was wondering why there's a pilot and co-pilot slot in the fighters. The copilot can't fly the ship when the pilot dies or anything and I (accidently) launched a fighter without a copilot and he had three kills in one sortie. I looked through the manual, but I couldn't figure out what the copilot's actual job was. If I don't need one, that means I can launch all eight fighters from my Firestorm (tentative Yay!). Correct, you can launch up to eight fighters (if you have that many) using pilots only. Co-Pilot = one more set of eyes to track the enemy and monitor fighter systems while the pilot goes after the target.

  22. quote:Originally posted by Steve Conley: Here's a question for ya; If you target a fighter, and you keep it in front of you, will your PTA system "prefer" to attack that fighter or will they continue to independantly shoot the stuff around you? Cause I've found that for the most part, missiles and PTA are the only things I can use against fighters (at least as long as I'm stuck with keyboard control ;-P ), so being able to focus yer PTA fire would be a big plus! :-D PTA targets the most imminent threat (usually) so it is more likely to target incoming missles (use your EMD to avoid that).

OK before this actually gets out of hand. I did not start this thread to have it devolve into a political debate nor a religious debate, which is obviously where it's headed and treading. Now I know you guys are quite good about keeping things civil but this thread is too near the edge, that fine line between standing for one's beliefs and bashing another for holding a different belief, for my peace of mind. If you really feel that you must continue in the current vein, take it to email or private message. If, OTOH, you want to comment about the traitor, John Walker (you do remember the topic of this thread right?) then please do so. [ 12-07-2001: Message edited by: Tyrn ]
  25. quote:Originally posted by vogelap: I'd just like to pop into the fighter to check out their status -- kinda seeing things from their vantage point, rather than trudge all the way down to the launch bays, suit up, and get into a fighter... Waiting for those turbolifts can be boring! 8-) Is what I'm requesting even possible? That's the way it worked in BC3K but not in BCM. In BCM you have to physically enter the craft either by walking or launch it, exit your craft and then enter your support craft by using the Alt-D method (not very smart but possible).
