Also, I haven't noticed any communications (e.g., radio calls, etc.) from anyone outside of my crew - is this normal? The only off ship comms you can make (other than giving orders to your crew which they will promptly bungle half the time until they realize they are not veggies ) is issue an SOS (read the manual for details on that). Other comms will play a role in MP but not in single mode.

quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: Lets try this again... BCM doesn't map any extended joystick buttons, apart from those listed on the keyboard. So, M1, M2, M3 being mapped have nothing to do with BCM. [n00b translator engaged] I think he's saying M1 = Button 9 = Missile Cycle and according to the quick ref button 9 does indeed cycle missles. By moving the slider to M2 (button 10) or M3 (button 11) he's moved it to a button that BCM does not recognize and therefore fixed the problem. Sounds like a design flaw with the stick to me, why would any stick designed replace buttons (1 push = 1 signal) with a slider (position = constant signal)? quote:Originally posted by Captain Dread: Just wondering, but don't we/you/people want there to be dynamic action on planets? Sort of like how ships sometimes randomly attacking space stations, wouldn't planetary bases launch strikes on each other? In space you don't have two hostile launch platforms within the same region, all battles take place because ships enter the region and attack. Planet side you have multiple hostile launch platforms and if they could see each other, your machine would grind to a complete halt.

Which was the point of course! I do have more but most of it stems from The Silmarillion so I'll rumage through my bag o' cobwebs and see what I can find that's more LotR oriented. Just for the interim, here's an easy one and a stumper both from the Silmarillion: What is Gandalf's true name? Who is Aiwendil? -
quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: Unfortunately, win2K and winXP are different beasts. You cannot safely shutdown everything without breaking something. There may be a version of that program (EndItAll I think its called) floating around though. If anyone comes across it, let me know too. www.mlin.net provides two tools to do this: Startup Control Panel and StartupSelector (under the MISC section). First I use StartupSelector to save a copy of my current configuration (I do this everytime I install anything new). Next, I use Startup Control Panel to force my machine to NOT load any programs at startup. I then use StartupSelector to save a copy of that vanilla configuration. Now when I want to run with nothing in the background, I just run StarupSelector, choose my vanilla configuration and reboot. When I'm done playing I just reload my standard configuration and reboot. While it might sound a little complicated, it's really extremely simple and the tools are both free. [ 12-28-2001: Message edited by: Tyrn ]

Aulë, he defected to Melkor, it was for that reason that Curumo was sent as head of the Istari (wizards) as he was also one of Aulë's followers. [ 12-24-2001: Message edited by: Tyrn ] -
quote:Originally posted by Epsilon 5: Well I've been thru deadlocks too... leaving the ship floating around a station while trading with a shuttle is not good... I saw my sunflash being almost destroyed by a alinix... even thought I ordered it to attack it... I had no more reactor. No logistix computer.. I entered my ship by the airlock (shuttle couldn't dock). I towed my ships VERY close to the station but I couldn't dock! I asked for a tow and nothing happened, money wasn't even deducted from my account... I had 1.2 millions... what to do in such a situation? Ships being towed can't dock. Order your shuttle to stop towing you and then dock.

At least, not if you're referring to goblins and orcs in Tolkien's work.QB] Right and wrong : Goblins is the name for the smaller orcs that infested the Misty and the Grey Mountains in the later Third Age and had their capital at Mount Gundabad. That is the reason that Bilbo faced mainly goblins and Frodo faced orcs. Two more: What was Gollum's real name? Who was Sauron's original master? -

quote:Originally posted by Joe Redhawk: Tyrn: I registered properly. I went from registering in the forum to registering the game. Wasn't asking for tech support. I know that your haven't fully registered properly because you would have added the system profile link to your signature. With that link in your signature, I (or any user) can quickly see what your system specs are and whether they might be contributing to any problem you're having. We really do like to help each other out around here but we also like to make doing that as easy for everyone involved as possible. Hence my previous post. Now, I must say that I am glad you've found such good help and that I never doubted for a moment that you'd find anything but that. Again though, add that profile link to your signature so we can do our best to keep you out of trouble... [ 12-21-2001: Message edited by: Tyrn ] -
Night at the movies - Lord of the rings (minor spoilers alert!!!)

quote:Originally posted by Simparadox: Definetly. Although, to be honest, the Orcs were a bit off from how I imagined them. I'm a AD&D/D&D player, so I have a slightly different vision of goblinoids. Same thing about the troll, a little different from how I would have pictured it. I guess I just have a less "disgusting, realistic" picture in my mind. If you know the history of orcs, you realize that they look right - the orc race was bred by Melkor in mockery of the elves using elves he captured and twisted. My problem was that Rankin and his blasted animated goblins in The Hobbit and his orcs in The Return of the King always pop up when I think of goblins or orcs. quote:By the way, did anyone else notice a strange resemblence between Balrog and Diablo (the Diablo from Diablo the game, that is)? As Tolkien pretty well was the father of the modern fantasy genre, no it's not surprising at all. Trivia question: What is the difference between a goblin and an orc? -

quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: OMG!!! This is THE BEST movie I have seen ALL my life. I'm NOT kidding. In fact, I'm taking the missus and toddler to see it tomorrow. Damn, this movie was good. Now I gotta wait TWO frigging years for part 2&3. Damnit! I hate it when they do that. I would have happily sat through all nine hours without taking a pee break. No kidding. And all of you thinking that Hollywood ruins books. Let me tell you this, if they ruined any part of it, I didn't notice. Except for a scene at the inn which probably didn't make the cut. Dunno. Firstly, I agree best film my eyes have seen. The list of missing parts and people is actually fairly large: Farmer Maggot, Tom Bombadil and Goldberry the River Daughter, Old Man Willow, Glorfindel, the entire Old Forrest, the Barrow Downs, purchasing Bill the Pony in Bree, traveling through the swamp with the bitems, and the list continues. The important thing though is that the screenplay does not diminish the story because most of the scenes and people left out are side line characters and events. That one scene in Bree, however, is the only way the hobbits can dare trust Strider and gives great insight into who he really is. Cutting that was a mistake IMO but a forgivable one because of how great the film is. The audience cheered a couple of times and the silence was deathly still on numerous occasions. My wife, the screamer that she is, when the ***** actually catches ***** in Balin's tomb chamber. From the way they play peek-a-boo, it's obvious what's going to happen but she let out a blood curdling scream anyway. Great show, going to see it again Saturday. -
quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: aha!!! I knew I wasn't losing my mind. You noticed that too huh? That and a few others: The party tree wasn't lit with enough lanterns, "Gandalf, what's the elvish word for friend?" and others but they aren't worth mentioning as they don't really detract from the film. Even the Glorfindel/Arwen thing is passable but to cut that one scene is nearly unforgivable. But the rest of the show is so spectacular that it's forgivable. PS...I first read LotR when I was nine (same time I read Beowulf) and reread them nearly once a year since then. I noticed. [ 12-19-2001: Message edited by: Tyrn ]
