  1. Have you tried lowering the acceleration for your video and sound cards, as indicated in the FAQ? Also, have you tried running the DirectX diagnostics programs via DxDiag?

  3. The movies have been released. Check here for links to dedicated hosting sites. The way I did those is that I made a rather large recording using Fraps, then edited it using VirtualDub and broke it down into five parts. So, you need all five in order to view the entire sequence. I will have the planet based ones ready by next week; these are space only. [ 11-18-2003, 03:18 PM: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
  4. whoa, thats odd. I decided to compress the movies using Windows Movie Maker; and using the High Quality Video (large) codec setting, all the movies shaved around 10-12MB on average without any visible visual loss. Color me stumped as I never knew that the WMV format was this good. e.g. on an originally 4GB file, compressed with DivX, the size was 31MB. In the WMV format, it dropped to 19MB.

I only listed some of the things I've observed im pretty sure there are more (SC will probably grill me for not really elaborating on stuff) The games are as alike as night and day. Anyone who played X:BTF and BCM (or BCM Gold), knows this. At least I think they should. Comparing X2 and UC is just silly. X2 is like the modern day Elite- hopefully on steroids - due to its emphasis on trading, building stuff etc. Obviously there is a reason why BCM/G sold more units than every space sim since Freespace2. Incl. Freelancer. Like previous BC games, UC is purely combat and the trading is just another feature (like so many) thrown in just for the hell of it. And that bit about walking around in a station in X2 is inaccurate - at least the last time I checked. If I added the ability to walk around inside stations, ships etc, it won't be some small corner in a massive station. It would be the entire station. If they can overcome the problems which made X:BTF a tedious affair (at least to me), X2 could be a great game. Right now, the only thing that X2 and UC have in common, is the fact that they both feature a space sim environment. UC, like BCM/G is not a space sim.

Oh sorry, I forgot to mention that. Well, I had gone off and bought the boxed version of TMPGenc so that I could do MPEG=II. Since it wasn't going to arrive for a few days, I had some free time, so I decided to see how much I could accomplish with what I had. After going through all the steps, I was fishing in Start/Programs when I noticed that I had the latest DivX installed on this machine. And it was the pro version to boot. So, I had a DivX codec. With that knowledge, I took off on a new movie making career. Anyway, the movies are in DivX format, using the 5.05 codec.

  8. I have made 8 movies. 5 in space and 3 on the planet. I recorded them in 800x600 using Fraps. The smallest file was about 4GB. . Then I used VirtualDub to remove unwanted frames and then a resizer plugin to drop it to 640x480. I then (using VDub again), stripped the audio stream (which was now out of synch with the audio due to the deleted frames). Then I took the original 44Hz MP3 music, loaded it into Nero Wave Editor and reduced it to the length of the video, then saved it out as a 22Hz PCM wav file. Went back to VDub and added the music Final file size on average is about 31MB for a 2:50 movie. The other movies are similar length, with the smallest being 1:34 long and 16MB in size. Will start distributing them this week.
  9. OK, this is bad. Very bad
  10. Worthplaying have a new preview up
  11. quote: Originally posted by LostInSpace: Oh yeah that one the identity theft commercial. You know the first time I saw that commercial I was like WTF! I thought I was bugging out. . The first time I saw it, I was laughing soooo hard. The actor they used is 100% perfect and spot on. This is one of my all-time fav commercials, second to the heeelarious Terry Tate one. I hope I find it online.
  12. Yeah, this and Far Cry are on the top of my list

  15. quote: Originally posted by Alacard: Thank you very much. I guess it was so late when I tried it last night that I just couldn't get it to work. Just to test it, I send my Marines against a weaker-base near Wraith... they didn't last too long but fought like true marines Marines (and their handling) are so vastly superior in UC, its not even funny. Scary even. You'll see.
  16. quote: Originally posted by Marvin: Then you can do a long one like this: Yep, I was right. This thread was such a bad idea. heh quote: Originally posted by IceBladeTSW: DS: You could as you said export from UC at 800 x 600, then use Virtual Dub to grab the shots you want and compress them. Then Re-assemble them all in Virtual Edit Lite and add music. To cut down the size even more, using TMPG you can convert to mpeg, so that its a very small file type (I've converted some 24min stuff to roughly 240mb files with it). If you wanted to compress it still more, using Windows Media Encoder it could be cut down to a few mb(3min Muisc Video, roughly, 7mb). If you want some links I'd be more than happy to oblige. Right. I'm glad that at least someone thinks I'm going through all that crap; with the limited time I have on my hands.
  17. quote: Originally posted by Alacard: Well, I need the demo; just ordered online but it takes 5-7 days for free shipping What has you needing the demo got to do with ordering the game online? And there is a 99% chance that the demo will NOT be out this year. At all. As soon as the game goes Gold, I'm going on vacation.
  18. quote: Originally posted by SR-71: Hello! These are bad news. I have Geforce4 MX and don't think to change it only to play a single game. This is a great disguise! Many people here have Geforce4 MX, so you┬┤ll have many buyers lost (starting with ME). Perhaps there will be anything to do but change the Video card (forget it!)?? Greetings Please read the thread again! And yes, your MX card is a SUB STANDARD card and won't run ANY game that requires a Pixel Shader. In UC, there are non-PS versions of planet terrain rendering features (e.g. clouds) which need it. Of course, the non-PS versions do NOT look as good as the PS version. In space, PS effects such as shields, planetfall etc will use the non-PS versions from BCM. [ 11-17-2003, 09:05 AM: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
  19. Will you ladies knock if off? Shouldn't that personnel pain sound be frigging obvious by now? It never ceases to amaze me how some of you ever touched this game, when something as braindead simple as this, can be elusive. This is just stupid. Plain stupid. And if you gits don't quit cluttering my goddamn board with rubbish, I'm going to start banning people without warning. I've already told the moderators to do just that.
  20. Just as I suspected. The usual unrealistic requests. Even a 1 min movie at 800x600 (the lowest supported by UC), could be close to 500MB. Let alone one that shows all the game's capabilities and which could span an hour or more.
  21. ....not yet, but I've just bought and checked out the latest version of Fraps which now also captures sound. I did some sample movies and they were quite good. A tag grainy, but very good. So, what kind of movies would you guys like to see? I was thinking of doing a space combat one, and then a planetary air/ground combat one showing how to manage your troops using the new Troop Orders menu etc. [ 11-18-2003, 12:52 PM: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]

That commercial is heelarious.

Yeah, I know - but I won't need to add - yet another gun. I'd probably just allow some weapons to work under water. Its not going to be in the final release, thats for sure.
