  1. dirt, I'm assuming you are talking about IA0115? Thats the IA mission I'm using to try and shake the pause you mention when you get the "hostiles identified" message. For me, its maybe 3-5 seconds and I have pretty decent hardware. Defragging helped somewhat for me, but this might me something we will have to live with. I'm going to try the -preload again since its been awhile since I tried it.
  2. Read that thread again... slowly. And concentrate on SC's posts. No more hints.
  3. Check this thread Sounds similar. Although you will have to wade through a lot of nonsense to get to the meat of the thread.
  4. quote: I may get roasted for this, but I think probably the reason is to make the game more stable in a Multiplayer environment. You maybe right, but I thought it was to add more action focus to UC. More vehicles/ships moving slower = more conflict over a period of time. Something like that.
  5. I have been ignoring that board since it became a cesspool. At least with GG its mostly decent gamers wanting to talk about the game and a sprinkling of trolls. With the DC board, its just the opposite.
  6. quote: hehe, I have reduced the egress altitude from 20K to 15K feet. Hopefully you guys will get the hang of it, or I'll have to reduce it to 10 feet. LOL! And then you'll have to add Fred Flintstone animation of your AE's feet running under the CC! heh, sorry, thats the mental picture I got when I read SC's post.
  7. quote: Is there an autosave feature maybe? Autosave every 10 minutes or something? No there isn't. quote: I forget to save and will play for 4 or 5 hours and then the game crashes and then I go Ouch. Sorry to hear that. But you are breaking rule #1 using a computer, whether its playing games or editing a Word doc. Save often. The fastest way to save is just "exit" which saves to the default profile and "resume" from the main menu, which loads the default profile.
  8. quote: OK, give me one reason Here's mine. We no longer will need to hear that Earth looks like one big blue marble.
  9. The Gamezone review is much more fair. Although he rightly states that the game requires you to use your imagination to get the most out of it and then he got bored playing ROAM. I guess he threw the imagination part out the window at this point. But a decent review nonetheless.
  10. quote: Hey, why IS Resnig hated?? Search under Resnig and you will see some great stories about him. Including the cruel things players do to him. Basically, he's the kid that gets beat up at school all the time.
  11. I for one am quite sad to see the series come to an end. I was sort of a late comer to the series (2002) and BCM and UC represents everything I look for in a computer game. Thanks to the SC and all at 3000AD for providing so much fun for such a small price. So not to derail the topic too far , I'll say that this review (Gamespot) unfortunately represents what most in the mass gaming media think of the series, which is not much. They just don't get it. Oh well, what can you do.
  12. quote: Then when the audio acceleration is turned down it allows more caching of other game stuff? I tried all levels of sound acceleration in directx and turned off both music and sound effects in UC with no noticible difference. I have onboard sound. I suppose I could try disabling the sound in the bios but nothing seems to point to a sound issue as the SC has already said. I'll keep tweaking. I enjoy this kind of thing.
  13. Here's my experience, using IA0115.. Defragging helps a lot, especially for the small stutters when the game is loading sound effects, such as thunder during the storm or some friendlies show up in your view. I still get a 2 or 3 second delay when the game appears to be loading a lot of data, most notably when you get the "hostile target identified" for the first time, and the hostiles show up on radar.
  14. quote: There are a couple of problems, like your NPC troops walking on AIR Are you sure they aren't using their jetpacks?
  15. To prevent Windows from rebooting when it encounters a system error: Control panel -> system -> advanced -> start and recovery "settings" -> uncheck "automatically restart" under system failure. Also, check the control panel -> administrative tools -> event view -> system or application for a clue as to whats causing it.
  16. You guys do realize those flyers were probably printed in like September.. I suppose it does look kind of stupid. But it sure did get me excited about Painkiller.
  17. quote: Oh BTW, for some odd reason, the planet Majoris in the Majoris system looks exactly like Earth. I seem to remember the SC mentioning that the planets shared a limited number of planet models.
  18. quote: Whenever I walk on the planet, my view seems to change and I start to walk in a completely different direction from where I began. From the VCF : 18. FIXED: In first person the view position would drift due to precision loss. I can verify that this is fixed in 1.00.02. Also, its good to get in the habit of becoming very familiar with this document. You will often find the answer to a question or find out that what you think is a bug/issue has already been reported and documented.
  19. Sounds like the AI is using the /i cheat. HAHA. That would be funny if SC snuck something like that in. IF player== "the bunny" %commandline = %commandline AI /i But seriously, I've only played IA stuff. I'm killing stuff but its the usual FC against AI FCs difficulty. The cap ship stuff is easy if you can earn your wings fighting fighters with fighters.
  20. quote: Of course, now, with ships being slower, that cloak can be a liability, as you may end up nuking your crew before you even take down the station. I usually have no problem capturing stations using carriers and that iridium sucking toy you mention. But if not, its always because I end up nuking the station because they refuse to surrender. Its probably because I hit the station too hard because I'm fearing that artificial timer that says my crew will soon be in jeopardy. I think I need to learn how to take a station with a cruiser. Sounds like a fun challenge.
  21. quote: This is Galcom's design decision and it is there game, but im entitled to my opinion just like you guys are entitled to kiss mr. smarts feet and praise his word as if it were gospel. Its ok to have an opinion. Its another thing to be insulting.
  22. quote: My only "compaints" (I have 2 of them)....miss the 1-9 system for speed control. Taking some getting used to, using w,s,a,d....granted that is what the majority of the fps games use. Ditto here. I miss the 1-9 throttle control as well. Also, afterburner and retro rockets although holding down W/S perhaps mimicks afterburner/retro? Not sure. I'm also a little unsure how VTOL/FTOL works. I haven't read the manual yet, so shoot me. Just playing some IA scenarios so far. SWEEET! I'm loving the planet based gameplay. I think I'll be spending awhile just playing these 4 or 5 scenarios. These justify the price of the game alone IMO. Huge improvement over BCM. The added ambience helps too. Plant life, trees, animals and especially the building and vehicle models. And the music is awesome.
  23. quote: Unknown Ouch. Thats the same dreaded word I heard when I asked my wife when my mother in-law was moving out of our house. No kidding.
  24. Assuming you have BCM Gold, there is a tutorial section somewhere toward the back of the manual. Load the instant action mission while reading along. This is the best place to start. Also, there is another section in the back of the manual that is helpful to noobs. I can't remember what its called, but its something like "Things you should know". Someone help me out here.
  25. LOL Are they sure thats oil? Looks like my appt. bathroom in college after a long night of partying.
