Newbie Naval Group Questions
Marvin replied to Darkken Nightshade's topic in Universal Combat Series
quote:Originally posted by Darkken Nightshade: As soon as SC1 was in the air, the CC hit the water nose first. So I guess there was something I was supposed to do before I launched? As always, try giving your command craft the order to Halt (after you've set it level via NumPad 5)... then turn on the autopilot. -
quote:Originally posted by Nicholas Dogris, Ph.D.: Ola SC, I know that UC is a specialized game and that it takes some time to learn the game. It is just so damn hard to engage the enemy in a dogfight that it takes some of the FUN out of the game. Don't get me wrong. You know I love this game, why can't it be just a little easier? Do a forum search for "sweet spot" ... that should help make it a little easier.

When a visiting relative asks to see your family photo album and you drag out screen shots from Universal Combat with Resnig and the gang.

Turns out a Commander in Prime Fleet steered me to a really good place for storing pix. I'll be updating my avatar and profile shot today. Gotta love that Prime Fleet.

Well, until my Angelfire site went down (due to unactivity), it was four standard snapshots converted to JPEG (at 100%) and stitched together using PhotoStitch. Since they closed the site, though, the link won't be any good. Now I gotta figure something new.

Whose fault was it? Romans Or Jews
Marvin replied to Supreme Cmdr's topic in Politics, Religion & Legal etc
The only proof I know of for macroevolution is one fossil found out in the boonies of China. Even though it had been "faked" by piecing together two different fossils, parts of one of the pieces showed the "possibility" of a reptile with feathers. No other real proof exists. The Piltdown man was a fraud. Lucy and her cousin can't be directly linked to mankind. Consequently, scientists are beginning to wonder. By now, with all the exploration and digging, something should've been found. But nobody has found a missing link. Not for Homo sapiens. Not for any other species. I'm not saying evolution is wrong. But I do believe science has yet to prove it as fact. -

His only source for the hydrogen came from his garden hose.I have seen no more about his invention since then. I wonder why???rolleyes: I heard that Diesel (the guy who invented the engine) built it to run on corn oil. Then he died mysteriously and was found floating face-down in a river somewhere.

Crash Landing During Planetfall Without Waypoint
Marvin replied to scorchedearth's topic in Universal Combat Series
quote:Originally posted by Eclipse: you could just also change the planetfall prompt to the "do you want to die? y/n" prompt you get when you try to exit your suit as a SFM Lol. Best answer yet. I accidently tried making planetfall only once without waypoints and ended up on the darkside of Earth ... I survived unscratched but decided against landing. Maybe the MSL v.s. AGL at point of entry has something to do with it. I don't know. Or care ... proper Prime Fleet procedure is to set waypoints. And use autopilot. For me, the autopilot function has improved considerably. I just gotta remember not to leave a green crew in charge of parking my Megaron if I'm outside enjoying the view. When you tell your officers to prepare the ship for takeoff ... well, make sure they haven't been watching old George Pal movies. -
quote:Originally posted by Sebbish: You guys DO realize that it's just a teaser site for an upcoming movie, right? Ratz. I hope they don't sacrifice story line for action, though. Most of the Calvin stories were thought-provoking, not action-oriented: positronic psychology, culminating in the robots analyzing themselves. Even Daneel, robot supreme, spent a lot of his time pondering facts.

Beyond strange. I'm almost afraid to actually order one. Professor Isaac would've probably loved it, though. P.S. Thanks for the link.

quote:Originally posted by ProXimity: So would it be easier in all cases to get any CC or FC or SC to orbit if at higher altitudes to start with?Well, in the real world, the length of an aircraft's takeoff roll varies with altitude. Airflow over the wing (lift surface) decreases as the air gets thinner. But a rocket isn't interested in "flying" ... it just wants to depart Earth's gravitational pull. I'm not sure if an FC's altimeter operates via pressure (indicates altitude above mean sea level -- MSL) or radar (for altitude above ground level -- AGL). Either way, the craft's behavior appears to be quite predictable. If you're having trouble achieving orbit, just head for higher ground. Personally, as an old navigator, I enjoy long hauls over a planet's surface. As long as the pseudo-autopilot is working, I can go to the kitchen and fix lunch without worrying about my craft plowing into the dirt. Just remember to go to TacOps and check your route. Flying over enemy territory while out getting a cup of coffee can ruin your day.

quote:Originally posted by ProXimity: ...I too have a hard time trying to get FCs out of a planet that would seem to have ALOT of gravity. It seems terrain does have something to do with reaching orbit altitude in an FC. From space, I foolishly set the autopilot and told it to "Return to Base" ... "Base" being my megaron parked somewhere in Italy (the proper thing to do would've been to set waypoints). When I made planetfall, I was 13,000 km away, over water. Try as I might, I couldn't get back into space.* So I called up my megaron on the TRS, pointed the FC in the right direction, and started the long trek home. A couple hours later, my onboard computer started yelling a warning and I noticed the EAI had dropped. The FC was flying over mountainous terrain and, as I crossed a mountain top, the EAI would drop and the FC's speed would increase. During one of those fluctuations, I pressed Shift+9 and got the query to depart for space. *Hull armor was at 97%. All other systems were 100%.

Prox, If intruders do make it to a shuttle (even if they fail to steal it), check the shuttle after your marines have apprehended the bad guys. Most likely, they've taken a lot of your equipment and minerals and stored it in the shuttle. When intruders steal a shuttle, they usually take other stuff with it.

Actually, you can open them with Windows Media Player ... though the pix will be upside-down (mine were, anyway). Also, QuickTime Player will work (right-side up, I think) ... the QT Picture Viewer worked but kept freezing up on me. To convert to JPEG, the Picture Viewer allows you to copy the image for pasting to MS Paint. But, if you have any digital camera or scanner software, try it too. I use my scanner program to load and covert the images ... works very well.

quote:Originally posted by JCMan: Does anyone have any tips on how to get back into space? What type of ship? I've noticed that shuttles have trouble reaching orbital altitude when under manual control. If your command ship is in space, just order your shuttle to "Return to Base" and it will climb rapidly. In fact, you can watch the sky darken as you climb far above the normal 30,000 feet.

School Uniforms (and other uniforms)
Marvin replied to Kalshion's topic in Politics, Religion & Legal etc
Besides the "individuality" issue, you have parents who can't afford the $200 some rip-off local merchant might charge (supply and demand is definitely in the merchant's favor) for a uniform. That said, some parent will always complain about the uniform but not the $300 brand-name sneakers the kid insists on wearing with it. Also, with uniforms, there is less need to determine, on a case-by-case basis, whether or not someone's outfit violates the school dress code. Fewer students will miss a class because they were forced to go back home and change clothes. But uniforms aren't the total answer. You also need to get rid of the smoking areas next to the school parking lot and any other activity that detracts from education. Then all you need are more competent teachers and fewer basket-weaving classes. Uniforms won't make anyone a better person once outside the school environment. But they should help limit the anarchy that seriously detracts from a positive learning environment. -

quote:Originally posted by Jaguar: Clinton was the Deserter, NOT Bush.Neither of them were deserters as it is defined in the UCMJ. quote:Bush was NEVER AWOL, from anything, and that he was honorably discharged at the end of his service.Bush said today on Face the Nation that he doesn't have any records. Personally, I still have all my old flight records and I know of no USAF pilot or crewmember who doesn't at least have a copy of total hours flown. In Bush's favor, though, he did name the F-102 (stumbled a bit as he said it) as the aircraft he flew. I'm pretty sure ADC flew that craft during the 1960's and '70s. quote:Go spew your propaganda somewhere else please.Wouldn't that make this a definitively conservative forum? -
Universal Combat - First Impressions
Marvin replied to Supreme Cmdr's topic in Universal Combat Series
quote:Originally posted by Banquet: Shriver, There's a freeware sim called Orbiter which has accurate physics and interplanetary space travel.Go here to download Orbiter. Btw, there are a couple of other "physics-based" freebies, like Starshatter, that are combat oriented. Do a search here, at the forum, to find them. quote:When trying to plan a base attack by bringing in teams of personnel from your ship, placing your assets for attack, the last thing you want to worry about it orbital mechanics and escape velocities!Yes. Think of all the AI processing that would require ... all those vehicles trying to take off, land, and orbit using real-world physics. Besides, doesn't the game maintain a running scenario throughout the entire universe? Things you can't see from your position in space continuing to progress and possibly affect the outcome of your own mission? Dynamically? The physics in this game is pretty much the same as in Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Dune ... on and on and on. Even Kubrick's 2001 ignored physics when it slowed the pace of the movie. -
quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: I have made a decision to restore the joystick and the 1-9 thrust functionality in UC. Thank you, sir. Though my Cyborg 3D Gold is weighted, I still need to keep my left hand on the throttle to hold the joystick in place ... else, in the heat of aerial combat, I'd probaly flip my stick into the monitor screen.

If you want a much bigger pot, it might be better to place any and all UC support (patches, mods, tools, etc.) in a locked part of the forum ... accessible only to those with a (paid for) key code. Just a thought.
