Merry Christmas all. We did the Christmas Eve gift opening. By not asking for much I think I have had the best Christmas in a long time. At least from my immediate family. I haven't even been over to my friend's and my sister and bro in law have yet to visit. The twelve days of Christmas is a reality around here. Got my first gift friday. Makes it last a bit longer and seem nicer. We gonna do a "what didya get" thread as well?

Akira: That's why I put whale in quotes. MOst kids in Sunday School are taught whale for simplicity I think and that's what most people remember if anything. It was some sort of large swimming creature as you say and I just used whale in quotes to signify this. To tender [in this particular case(as a verb)] only means to provide the assurance of payment but not the payment itself. To call it "a tender" changes it to a noun and thus changes it to the actual assurance of the payment but still not the payment itself. Tender has other definitions (I'm still using Draconis' quote). It does not mean only to provide the assurance of a debt; it also means to satisfy a demand . As in tender a resignation. This is why this particular clause of the constitution regarding the States makes it very clear that an assurance of paymentmay only be backed up by gold and silver coins.

"Congress shall make no law regarding the establishment of religion". The key word is establishment. Words mean things remember? Where is freedom of religion in the constitution. It may have been intended but is not the law.

Draconis If I remember right semi colons are used to separate semi independent clauses. Semi independent clause are dependent on something else to make them semi independent. The operative dependent clause in this instance is "No State shall". To break it down (or expand the statement.) ---------------------------------------- No state shall enter into any treaty, alliance, or confederation; No state shall grant letters of marque and reprisal; No State shall coin money; No state shall emit bills of credit; No State shall make anything but gold and silver coin a tender in payment of debts; No State shall pass any bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law impairing the obligation of contracts, or grant any title of nobility. ------------------------------- OK now that we have made every dependent clause an independent clause thus basically a sentence unto itself lets look at them. --------------------------------- No State shall coin money. Coin actually means to produce, or manufacture. As in to coin a phrase. I just double checked. It specifically means to manufacture especially by stamping. ------------------------------ No State shall make anything but gold and silver coin a tender in payment of debts Make does not mean to produce or manufacture. Make means provide. Make way. Provide me a way through this. I made it. I did it. I made my way. I provided my way. I did vote perturbed on both questions that had that answer as a choice. However, continual upgrades/patches/refinements/better graphics were not ruled out so take the perturbed with a grain of salt. Yes I seem perturbed but if it keeps getting better what's the difference?

You should see all the other stuff floating around. Good thing we can laugh at it. I hate when I get one of those calls where the machine has dialed like 5000 numbers at once. Then the phone company completes all the calls at once but the machine only chooses the one call that beat out all the others by a microsecond then hangs up on all the others. I get hangups like that all the time. I want a Telezapper.

Since Christmas is coming up how about the Star of Bethlehem? It talked of the three Magi and how they could have possibly predicted the event and a bit about Herod. Way cool. I did find this. This is a tough one. Really tough. There are reasons for it and against it. For: Like Kiran said hygiene easier. I imagine it traps lint and various fluids and you would have to clean it till the child could do it for himself. If later on the noncircumsised man does not have enough room in the sheath of skin it can cause a forced ummmm "readiness" which can be painful and detrimetal to the entire organ itself over time. There is also the being different thing. Against: Trauma to the child. Missing a natural part of biology. Desensitizes the exposed area. I really have no thoughts myself yet but have often wondered what I would do if I had a son. Wonder if a half type thing is available. I would pin your/the child's doctor down and weigh all the reasons. Whatever YOU decide the child will have to live with it.

Atlantis. Already a legend of a legend when written down by Plato or Socrates. The column of smoke during the day was also a pillar of fire at night no? Sounds like a volcano to me. I seem to remember another Discovery channel show or PBS hypothesizing that and possibly finding evidence. Now then, a skeptic would probably say "How Fortunate they saw it just then and incoprorated that into there myth" and they would be right. It was fortunate. It might have been a natural phenomenom but that doesn't mean God didn't make it happen just at that moment. What bothers me now is why they wandered forty years. I sort of remember the reason (broke some commandment or insulted God or something) but how in the devil do you stay lost for 40 yrs? Even without a compass you could walk away from the sun in the morning, take a break, then walk towards it in evening and eventually get somewhere. The three great pyramids represent and are in line (or were at the time) with the three stars in Orions Belt. Other pyramids found around the area represent the four other bright stars that represent his two shoulders and his two knees. Very interesting. It is a HUGE area and almost represents a scale model of the constellation Orion. But why? The Flood. Yes there is evidence of a flood but it would be cool if were THE flood we are talking aobut. Ice Age. Wooly Mammoths could have existed as little as ten thousand years ago but were very stunted due to lack of food and isolationism for some odd reason I can't remember. Discovery Channel again. So far as we haven't had enough time to eveolve to point we have I feel you are discounting genius. There have been several geniuses "recently" that were above and beyond what normal men are. So why not a cave man genius? Ages ago I heard/read an explanation that in the first part of Genesis Adam and Eve refer to "mankind" and "womankind" and by the time they got to Cain and Abel they were now talking about specific people. This allows for "mankind" to name all the beasts and allows for Cain to go off and marry someone from somewhere else. I do not believe in a literal six day creation. Did they even have months and years back then? A "day" was probably only the only unit of time they were familiar with when the story was first started to be handed down. Not at the time of transcription. If dinosaurs didn't exist how come we got bones? Pretty good joke God played on us there. If they existed concurrently with man one would think there would be a mention in the bible. Saw the Tower of Babel somewhere in here. Glad that was brought up. Might explain different dialects in the region. Good point about the Chinese having a 15,000 year written history. Have seen some Discovery Channel show where there is evidence of a great flood. That's pretty cool. But if it wiped all of man but Noah and family why do we still have Asians and Africans and Europeans? That's it for now. Perhaps my creaky brain will dredge up something else I half remember and I will ask.
