After reading this thread and a couple of news stories I updated the work computer first thing this morning. Norton Corporate caught it about 11:00 AM. This was the Slammer worm. W32/something or other. This is the first time it has ever alerted me.

Been seeing a shorter version on television and this movie actually looks like it will be good. The suit still looks cheesy as all get out but it might be a good movie.

Kinda sorta but not really. Got the old one going again. Got internet access at the house again. Still ain't quite right but oh well. Got the new one fired up. Look around a bit more and see that Lexmark is using the DCMA to sue replacement cartridge maufacturers and refurbishers because a chip contain in an OEM Lexmark cartridge is copyrighted. No more cheap aftermarket cartridges for you. The implications of some of this stuff are, as DragonLady would say, horrid. Some ramblings on Turbo Tax: If the C-Dilla messes with other programs that's bad. Every company has a right to protect their software to some degree. Even having to have a game disc in the machine is a form of DRM. I bet tax software is the most casually pirated software there is. It performs a useful function although only once a year. Isn't that why you buy tax software? To do taxes? I'll do mine, my mom's, my brother's, etc. That's why you buy it. What about a CPA who shadetrees friends and family on the side? Don't people who use tax software buy a new version every year ANYWAY to get the updates??? What's the prob? I'm having a tough time trying to form an opinion on this one. I did my own taxes till last year. Then I went to H&R Block and will probably go back. They didn't do any better than I did on the fed but the state they kicked some major rear and got mem a ton back. I can sort of see Turbo Tax position that they don't want their software casually pirated but I feel you buy it in the first place to do taxes. It shouldn't matter whose, how many, or where you do them that's why you buy the program. It would be different if I let my dad copy it to do his and my brother to do his and my sister to do hers and so on but if I'm the only one actually doing them what then? Very difficult to think about.

I know what not to get. Don't get a Ixla Digital Superpro 640. I got one about a year ago for about $60. It's ok for close ups but really poor quality for like landscapes or anything. Plus if you use the flash it eats batteries. It has internal memory only as well. I'm sure you'd want one with a memory card. It was good enough to start but now I want something much better.

FYI This article in Extreme Tech Talks about the addition of DRM (Digital Rights Management) to a program and how upset some people are. The discussion is here. Most hate it and only two people that I saw sort of agreed with the DRM but they admitted they didn't like it either. This is a Ziff Davis partner (?subsidiary?) called Extreme Tech and I got the info from the news letter. It has three DRM links. The other two are about Hollywood and the new hard drives implementing DRM. Tiny new drives may incorporate DRM. Hollywood out to control with DRM? Enjoy. I can forward the letter to anyone interested.

I liked it as well. The discussion boards and show info page still work at fox.com. In one of the threads I found a link to www.fireflysupport.com. Maybe Sci Fi channel will opick it up.

Jezebal has a pulse but not much else. Scandisk insisted on scanning so I let it. It found all the crosslinked files and seemed to be happy so I re-installed Win98. Heh, it installed over itself without wiping the hard drive. I coulda swore one of the Wins did that or asked first. Or maybe that's an oem restore disk. Oh well. My digital camera software is toast as is Jasc paint shop, ICQ, realplayer, win media, and BCM. Out of all that AOL still works. I don't know whether to be impressed, disgusted, or feel lucky. I'll dig around and see if there are any important files I can/need to save before I wipe it and start fresh. See ya'll on the other side of 1 ghz hopefully. Charles

Nope. Got the parts ordered. Ordered a sound card for the new one and a replacement processor for Jezebel. The processor shipped monday to I should have it tomorrow then I get to reformat the thing and see if that does anything. Hopefully it will then I can peddle it off when the new one works. Cranking the new one up after being idle for so long should be interesting. I'm wondering what it will do. We'll see what happens.

I'm surprised we don't already have a topic with this title but the search didn't turn anything up. Long story short; I killed my old computer and the new one isn't complete yet. It will be a few days before I have personal internet access. I will be at least be able to read from work during lunch. I try not to post and abuse my internet priveliges. Long story long; For the longest time the old 'puter wouldn't scan disk. It would defrag then it would scandisk but wouldn't scandisk first. Then last week it finds an error in the registry and fixes that. It works for about a week then two days ago it goes nuts. I try everything I can think of but it's toast. I think I might have another memory stick going bad so I switch them around to see if the "good" one will work well enough for me to fix the thing. I was about to the point of formatting c: and re-installing windows 98 . I turn it on and then nothing happens. I notice it's not quite as loud as it used to be so I look in the case and discover that in moving the memory I had laid a cable against the CPU fan and that burnt the processor up. Now it's either buy another processor ~$40 @ pricewatch or upgrade the silly thing with a motherboard combo at about $60. The new one needs a sound card to be complete. I bought the monitor for it last week. The Turtle Beach Santa Cruz tht Derek has recommended was $79.99 at the local Comp USA. It's about $20 cheaper online. I'll have to wait a bit but that $20 can go towards a joystick. I want the new one complete because I actually did have it up and running way back. But now it's going ot have a new monitor, sound card, and eventually a joystick. That may be too much addition for XP to handle without it going into "safety mode"(?). Plus I haven't run it in so long I have no idea what it's going to do. I never registered my copy so I am thinking I may just format the hard drive and re-install it like new and register it that way. So anyway if I don't show up for a few days this is why. Charles

I don't think paper money will ever totally disappear, but I do think other forms of payment will become so convenient that paper money will be used much less often. I have already seen it happen in my own life. It is far easier to swipe your debit card then it is to count out cash. I use my debit card wherever a machine is available and save my cash (there's that word again hehe) for use at places that don't have a swiping machine. I did have a bad experience just recently. I went to Target and picked up a few items and then got 15 gift cards. The cashier rang them all up and was ready to recieve my tender of payment. Unfortunately they had taken all the swiping machines out. I asked where it was and she replied " Oh I can swipe it for you." Well ok then, but I was wondering how I was going to get my code in without anyone hearing. She swiped the card and the machine refused the card because my card is a straight debit card and not one of those with the Visa logo on it. I had to break out the MAsterCard to tender payment I didn't think that was cool. What is wrong with deducting straight from my account with a debit card? Why did it need a credit card logo? Uggghhh. Someone is in cahoots with someone about something. To wrench myself back on topic. America's Path: Freedom of speech will never be seriously abridged. The right to Bear Arms will continue to be restricted. We will be very much more socialist in 50 years. Suits me. By that time I may need it.

Just to clarify I WAS willing to believe that it was blown out of proportion till I saw Lott's voting record and witnessed his subsequent behavior. To amend my very last statement above not only do I feel that I am better than that I feel the South as a rule is better than that. ( Wonders if Race is still watching this thread and if I have embarrassed myself beyond belief. )

Coupled with Lott's voting record and other things I think it most certainly can be argued. Coupled with the fact that he wouldn't apologize at first it most certainly can be argued. Coupled with the fact that he is now saying it was a trap it can be argued. What I found funny (as in odd) is that he tried to escape this fiasco with some shred of decency and even that failed him. It was a trap, yeah right. They "made" him say it. Did you not hear the tape? Paraphrased: Lott: "Mississippi was proud to vote for Thurmond when he ran for President." Audience: Cheers!! Lott: "And if we'd elected him we wouldn't have all these problems we have now." Audience: Silence!!!!!!!! He should have apologized immediately and profusely but he didn't. He committed political suicide and managed to set general opinion about southern racial attitudes back about 70 years. Thanks a lot Lott. I'm better than that.

I think it's a wonderful idea. At least in my opinion. It does not infringe on your right ot keep or bear arms yet still is an added measure of security. Not only would it prevent your gun being stolen and used against you it would prevent your gun from being used period if it did happen to get stolen. Or prevent children from using the weapon. It would also maintain privacy reducing the want of people to have guns registered. I'm not sold on that point but eh. But only if the tech WORKS! That is a big if.
