quote:Not hardly. I think you missed the point completely, so this statement is rather pretentious. Well, you have rather overdone the period thing. Thought I'd swap it up. quote:I'm saying that he must proceed LEGALLY Of course. quote: and in such a way that does NOT infringe on another's rights. Impossible. If they block the sidewalk they are denying your right to walk there. But they have a permit to do it. quote: That isn't THAT hard... Then why are you making it so difficult? When did I mention residential? Maybe my post made it seem that way or maybe you thought I was stuck on Gomez' riot example. You can shut your "office" window, etc, etc. quote:So, protests are only permitted on GOVERNMENT OWNED land to not ALLOW people to to interfere with MY RIGHTS. Again, impossible. I'm sure the government tries to make it as painless as possible for all involved but someone's "rights" are going to get infringed upon in some way or another be it noise pollution, you don't like the signs, etc. But they have the right to do that because they got the permit to do it. I'd like to have an example of your rights you don't want interfered with. Sure they can't damage anything of yours but what about the noise etc.? quote:I think you missed the point completely Then feel free to explain again without weilding caps like weapons. They make your posts difficult to read.

Steve, you are correct. I apologize.
-
The whole thing was a joke max.

Steve, I disagree with you on your views of conservative and liberal. I do not think that Conservatism means restricting change. It means traditional values. Liberalism does not mean change just for changes sake. It means more freedom (less traditional and yes, to agree with you, a wilingness to change) in your views. A conservative would probably not go to a nude beach. A liberal probably would. quote:If that student DISTURBS *MY* peace, he is then committing a crime by depriving MY rights. quote:The law is that they must first obtain a permit so as not to interfere with the lives of others. Careful Mike. You are saying two different things. First you are saying he is not allowed then you say he is. If he/she/they do not have a permit then you may call the police to arrest them for disturbing the peace. If he/she/they do have a permit then you can shut your window , turn up the radio, or leave. End of discussion. Give and take. Everything is give and take.

Into The Fire Act Four - Deliverence
Charles Lindsey replied to Blades's topic in Role Playing Discussions
Blades, here's hoping I kept your character true. [rp] Commander Chavik looked at the man who had recently had him knocked out cold. "How can you be sure of that?" Blades deadpanned him. "Ok," Chavik continued, "But I'm not real thrilled after being drug up here like so much baggage." Blades continued to stare. Chavik stared back for a minute before continuing. "Why do you need more baggage Blades? "Blades winced inwardly at the stab. The only outward sign was a twitch of his left temple. Chavik thought about pressing on but decided against it. "Besides, what would you have me do? I'm only a stockboy after all." Blades stared at the man incredulously. Then he began to laugh. The absurdity of the statement and all the tension that he had been through recently finally snapped something inside him. He laughed until his side hurt. The guards outside the door gave each other a look wondering what could be so funny when interrogating a prisoner. They shrugged and decided against checking in. The man had had nothing on him. "Commander Chavik," said Blades, "You are much more than a stock boy. You have been on Orion on at least three separate occasions..." "About eight," interrupted Chavik. A look of annoyance crossed Blades face but he continued, "... and are suspected of sending at least fifteen other agents." Chavik looked at the ceiling while ticking of on his fingers. He made a deep thought pouty face and waggled his head from side to in an about right gesture before looking back at Blades with a blank look. "If you are a stock boy I am still a file clerk." "Aren't you?" asked Chavik. Blades began to get angry and then realized Chavik was more than a little correct. As correct as calling himself stockboy when he was factually so much more. I do probably do a lot of things the same way I used to, just adapted to the position, he thought. The man had some strange analogies but was basically correct. Blades smiled slightly and inclined his head towards Chavik. "Ok, you're a stock boy. But you have the keys to the warehouse. I need those keys." During the course of the conversation Chavik had wandered over to the terminal in the ready room . As Blades made his last statement Chavik stopped and looked at him. He had his measure now. Not too bad of a sort after all. Chavik couldn't help but remember an ancient story about Earth's First World War. One where the enemies would climb out of the trenches and play cards at night before going back to killing each other the next day. "May I?" asked Chavik, gesturing towards the terminal. "What did you have in mind?" asked Blades, suddenly wary. "You wanted the keys to the warehouse, this is the key. Of course the main warehouse is several systems away but I do have a little cache out there." "Communications are blocked for security reasons, I'm sure you realize that. " "What security level did you use?"Blades gave him a blank look while trying to think of what exactly he had told Reynolds. Chavik just smiled and said, "Watch." Chavik then did the strangest thing Blades had ever seen. Chavik peered over the terminal as if he were wearing bifocals. He smiled when he apparently found what he was looking for. He then pinched his thumb and middle finger together as if he were about to perform yoga but extended his first, fourth, and pinkie finger like he was trying to be hyper correct while drinking a glass of tea. He tapped the hotspot and made a clicking noise with his tongue while he did it. Another screen appeared and Chavik perused this one as well. He found his hotspot and tapped that with the same gesture and noise. "You won't get anywhere, I had everything locked down tight." Blades said without much conviction. Chavik looked entirley too comfortable while working on the terminal. "You cannot send a message out. It would jeopardize the mission." "Not going to," said Chavik. He had stopped the clucking noise much to Blades relief but was concentrating hard now. "Well what then?" asked Blades. "I'm trying to modify an existing signal. Now hush. It's tricky right here and I don't want to screw up. Now hush please." Blades got angrily quiet while Chavik worked. He was sure he had everything locked down. But Chavik appeared to be making progress. Still, Blades was sure. Almost."You cannot modify anything," said Blades with some heat. "I had Reynolds make sure of that." "No you didn't," Chavik said while placing his wristcomm on the terminal and tapped one last hotspot. "What did you do?!?" Blades cried as he rushed over to the terminal. "Forced diagnostics." "That won't do a thing," said Blades with a sigh of releif. "Oh?" asked Chavik. "How do you think Galcom modifies the TTD on hulks for cadet target practice?" Blades paled. "What have you done?" Blades looked like he was about to have a heart attack as klaxons began sounding. Chavik picked up his wrist comm and smiled. Blades rushed to the bridge. "Three ships coming out of hyperspace, dead astern" the tactical officer informed. "Scramble the interceptors," yelled Blades. "They are shuttles sir," informed the tactical officer. Neena had investigated as well, "Karl, they appear to be in a holding pattern. Like they are escorting us." Blades turned around to see Chavik standig in the doorway grinning. Chavik looke dback at Blades. It appeared he wanted to hit him. [rp] -
Looks good Blades. May I have an @orion email address? One small thing. On the contents page the last entry/link "Commlink forum" wraps weird for me and I can't get to it. Could be me. no worries. Just letting you know.

Definitely call the police. And get documents. Get the police report. Take your friend to the doctor and get a copy of that report. Take pictures. Take pictures of the injury. Take pictures of the damaged property. Take pictures of the residence if any damage was done to that. I'm sorry this happened to you and your friend. Be prepared to protect yourself and your friend. I'd give you a cyber cookie but I put too much sugar in the last batch and they aren't quite right. Would a hug do? Take care.

Just a few observations I have made over the years. Right of way rules: 01) If it's bigger than you, it has the right of way. 02) If it's faster than you it has the right of way. 03) If it gets there first it has the right of way. 04) If it's doing something idiotic, give it the right of way. Even if you're bigger, faster, and got there first. Speed rules; Mph are cumulative. 01) If you just got your license deduct 5 mph. 02) Two days after you get your license and are comfortable add 20 mph. 03) If you are over 60 deduct 5 mph. If male: a) If rule 03 applies and you wear a hat deduct 5 mph. If rules 03 applies and you drive a buick deduct 5 mph. If Female: c) If rule 03 applies and you can't see over the steering wheel deduct 10 mph. d) If rule 03 applies and your hair is a color not seen in nature deduct 5 mph. Special additions to rule 03 06) If rule 03 applies and it is night deduct 5 mph. 07) If rules 03 applies and it is raining deduct 5 mph. 08) If it is Sunday deduct 10 mph. Murphy's rules 09) If you need to pass you will be on a two lane road with a no passing zone. 10) You will never need to pass when on a four lane highway. 11) If you are not in a hurry the person behind you is. 12) If you are in a hurry the person in front of you isn't. 13) If you are in a hurry the person in front if you who is not will need to turn left. 14) If you are in a hurry the person in front of you who needs to turn left will wait until there is absolutely no traffic for two miles in either direction. 15) The Cardinal Rule of Driving. a)While you are in a hurry, never, ever allow yourself to become trapped behind an old man wearing hat, driving a buick, and needing to make a left turn on a dark and rainy Sunday night. b)While you are in a hurry, never, ever allow yourself to become trapped behind an old lady who can't see over the steering wheel, whose hair is a color not seen in nature, and needs to make a left.

quote:Personally, I don't see how one event can suddenly be known to every commander of an entire fleet instantly. If you are talking multiplayer you are correct. Rumors and/or truths will spread at the speed of this board and/or email. That is instantaneously minus however quickly people read messages. However, if you immediately come to this board insulting fleet members (rp wise) the insulted (rp wise) fleet members will be sure to make you their first target come multiplay. quote:Communication just doesn't happen that quickly. The attacked ship/base, etc... would have to send out a warning to everything in it's communication range (Which will likely be limited), and then it would have to get out from there. That is if they get a chance to send a signal, or if there are witnesses even. Yes I believe it can. All it would take would be for you to one "bad thing" to another guy. That guy could conceivably log off and email or instantly ICQ his buddies. Then the rumor/truth starts spreading. Remember that humans will be playing this game. It won't take much. quote:My readings on the site have led me to believe that Dr Smart made this game as realistic as possible, and logically that would include communications, and character knowledge. Comms and character knowledge will spread as fast as the internet and word of mouth allow. Derek has mentioned corporations.

quote:That was the polite way of saying that my opinion is worthless unless I agree with America. It's called racism. I don't think so Menchise. He was saying that we americans are blindly sitting over here fat and happy the USSR fell and we have no major enemies to speak of. However the rest of the world is extremely aware of our powerful status and is nervous about it. I feel he said you (the rest of the world) are more aware of the unipolarity and understand it better than even we americans. [ 05-30-2001: Message edited by: Charles Lindsey ]

Translation please? What I got: 1) America is the pre-eminent power and everyone at best distrusts us but probably hates us. 2) We still need a missile defense system because some bad guy will shoot a missile at us. 3) The Kyoto treaty was unfair so we dropped it. 4) We should maintain our pre-eminence and police the world. Answers: 1) To the rest of the world, stuff happens. Live with it. America has not had a policy of aggression so far as I know. 2) Goes to #4. Personally I don't think we need one. But if ya get one to work sure, go ahead; scare the crap out of the rest of the world. 3) Had no idea what this was till a month ago when I saw it mentioned on a newsgroup. Still haven't researched it. Wondering why it didn't pop up in 50 ways thread. But it does sound unfair. 4) I thought the US didn't like policing the world without the support of the UN. We gripe about it enough. Spending our resources blah blah. Sounds like might makes right. No wonder the world hates us. I'm going to get into sooooooo much trouble for this post.

This is a day to remember those who have fallen in battle. How can I thank them? I can't. They are gone. Condolences to those families who lost someone. Be assured that I do appreciate their efforts. I have the life I live now because of them. To those personell who are still here I thank you as well. Remember your comrades. It ain't much but I have come to respect the military a whole lot more due to the guys I have met here. You are all stand up guys. Thanks again.

Menchise, it's the same as LMSAO but I just use Y for "you" instead of "m". I meant you are probably sitting there giggling at me. quote:Actually, I cut and pasted verbatim. True, but you left out the core definition which I italicized and is the basis of my proof. quote:I'm talking lexocographal technicality here: argument and debate are slightly different. I know that. I was told a debate was not an argument. It is. That's my entire point. All squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares kind of thing. You said "simply" (solely) a formal discussion. No it is not solely a formal discussion. You said "technically" ( a fine point) a formal discussion. If you can debate with yourself then it's not formal and cannot be solely. I was afraid you were taking my use of the word argument to take the scream-fest we most often think of. I was not. Lawyers argue cases and people argue points. I did not mean a hollering match. At it's core a debate is an argument. However, it is a specialized type of argument that most often implies formal discussion. Is that better? quote:Than ignore it. I thought it was simply a light hearted goof. Same here. Mike and I are having a very nice discussion. And since we are the only ones discussing it do what Mike said and ignore us.

Tac, just be thankful it didn't turn into a discussion of maritime law. Sheesh Tac, what did you put out? A trot line? And what the heck did you use for bait? We gonna need more marshmallows. Ok guys, Mart run, who wants what?

No. The "Admiral" in the RP may remain an admiral for RP posting purposes. At least until SC makes ranks for Gams. The individual who posts must have the rank of commander. RP is separate from the game. We (the players, I.E. the individuals) use game ranks on the board. All ranks are commander per Derek unless you are in a fleet position and that position is recognized.

quote:I'm still here. And probably LYSAO. Mike, to have an a and a b you must have a main part. You left that out. : a contention by words or arguments: as a : the formal discussion of a motion before a deliberative body according to the rules of parliamentary procedure b : a regulated discussion of a proposition between two matched sides. Same site I looked at last night. Actually I used http://www.m-w.com . Then I dug deeper and found this little gem under the synonym of the verb form. synonyms DISCUSS, ARGUE, DEBATE mean to discourse about in order to reach conclusions or to convince. DISCUSS implies a sifting of possibilities especially by presenting considerations pro and con (discussed the need for a new highway). ARGUE implies the offering of reasons or evidence in support of convictions already held (argued that the project would be too costly). DEBATE suggests formal or public argument between opposing parties (debated the merits of the amendment); it may also apply to deliberation with oneself (I'm debating whether I should go). Cool, huh? The fact that debate implies formal discussion does not change the other fact that it is still basically an arguement. Which is the basic definition I used to make my comment to Menchise. It does not have to be formal. The use of the word "as" in the definition above means for example. It is basically an argument. It is most often a formal discussion. According to the synonym paragraph above you could discuss with your wife whether or not to fix the car. You could then discuss which mechanic to use. You could then argue why your choice is best. Then you could debate with yourself whether you actually want to listen to her in the first place. Hehe. Isn't English the best? If it meant formal discussion it would say debate (n): a formal discussion. But then you couldn't have informal debates which would be an oxymoron. I know it's a very fine line I'm walking but it could come in handy one day. Are we done now? BTW, Nice chat. I had fun. [ 05-22-2001: Message edited by: Charles Lindsey ]

Joke or Debate? Put it in subject.
Charles Lindsey replied to Charles Lindsey's topic in General Chatter
After thinking on it Mike is right. I'll do it if I ever post a joke but most of the good ones are already used so that's not likely. -
quote:Dunno, Charles. The definition of debate is simply "a formal discussion". No, debate does not mean "simply" a formal discussion. Look it up. I'll tell everyone what's wrong. I thanked Jaguar for a follow-up argument supporting my case. Whether Jaguar meant to support me or not I don't know. It seems Menchise thought that I thought Jaguar was rushing to my defense after I thanked Jaguar for it. That was not the case and I said so. [edit in]I did not say that. I said I did not beleive Menchise was atacking me personally Menchise said debates are not battles and I said yes they are. Technically they are. We are now debating what a debate means. Formal or not debate equates to argument. Menshise and I are cool. He can attack my argument all he wants. He has not atacked me personally. Menchise? Submission: Put Joke in subject. I'm as guilty as anyone. I simply post and don't use the message icons all that much. I figure the tone of the message gets the tone of the message across. But that is not always the case. We are tripping all over ourselves and insulting each other on the process. If you intend a post as a joke put (Joke) in the subject whether or not you use a message icon. That should clarify things. Even if you use a message icon not everyone looks at them. If a point comes up that warrants debating one should start a new thread. What say you all? Define a joke as a joke and a debate as a debate. In the subject of the thread. (PS: all typos I blame on the humidity and one to many sodas going into my keyboard.)

Urban legend. Been on the net for a couple years and the joke is probably older than that. I believe it was originally about an ordinary freighter vs a lighthouse. Then there is the one where the couple wonders why their boat is going so slowly. A guy dives underneath and comes up laughing. They left the trailer attatched to the boat. Then there is the one where (and this one is really a groaner if you personalize it) you and your friend kill a cat while driving. You search high and low and enlist the Sherriff's help. When you finally find the owner you offer him/her money for killing the cat. The sherriff promptly arrests the owner for selling uhhhhhhm the other word for cat. I'll stick with hypocritical. quote:I doubt that Greenpeace has the funding to build their own power plants. You left out my following statement. quote:I wasn't attacking you, I was disagreeing with you. Debates are not battles, at least they're not meant to be. Yes they are. Debate = argue = fight = attack. Attack with words to try to prove your point of view or a set of facts. Or to prove statements with facts. But no I don't think you were attacking me personally. I was thanking Jaguar for his defensive argument. He made a better argument and provided info.

Pollute: (source: Merriam Webster online via AOL) code:2 a : to make physically impure or unclean : BEFOUL, DIRTY b : to contaminate (an environment) esp. with man-made waste synonym see CONTAMINATE My statement was Sarcasm. Not only did Greenpeace pollute but as an environmental group I think it was highly hypocritical of them to perform such an act with a substance they don't want used in the first place. If not Greenpeace then some other environmental group I am sure totally opposes the use of coal. Not only that but by buying 5 tons of coal they just created a market for another 5 tons of coal. How dumb is that? We don't like this stuff but we will create a market for more of it. To top it all off that 5 tons of coal could have gone to producing some of the energy we use. Some of the energy I bet greenpeace uses to power the lights and computers in it's home office. I wonder if they have any solar collectors to offset their energy use to some degree. Menchise' last paragraph I can agree with to some degree. Sure the quotes probablly aren't typical of most environmetal groups. At least I sure hope they are not typical. But it is those wackos who make such statements that need serious reigning in. Thanks for the defense Jaguar.
-
I've thought about it Blades. The people who truly have too much time on their hands are the nutbrains sitting around thinking that stuff up. I believe in being environmentally conscience but some of the above was ridiculous. Just read in the paper that Greenpeace dumped 5 tons of coal on Cheney's lawn in order to protest. Hope they clean it up before it pollutes the environment. Thanks for the comment Shingen.
-
No Blades, I took some time to give my opinion on some of "points" Shingen attributed to some un-named environmental groups. The fact that I took the time to respond to those "points" shows that I care to some degree. Besides, it didn't take that much time. What I posted should be regarded as an "Open Letter" to whatever group posted such thoughts. Joke with me about something else.
