Welcome! As far as the controller issue, you need to read this document. Specifically the 4th bullet under "General". You should also read this if you want to ask questions in the technical support forums.

Why did your shields drop? Some enemies could have been cloaked. Take their cue. If you are going to take on a hostile star station, do it while cloaked before HJing to it. And then stay cloaked while attacking it until it sends out the SOS. This part is tricky, but if you uncloak, and then dock to it while its sending out the SOS, you will capture it. Do you guys use the AP for flying to points within sectors? I never do. I pick my target in the NID/TAC, wait for the HJ engine to get to 100, and hit shift-9. I then fly the remaining few KM manually when I come out of the jump. The only time I use the AP is when using waypoints, whether set with the Navitron or using tacops to enter a planet's atmosphere.

I just use the date and a sequence # when I name them, i.e. "7/5 1", "7/5 2" and tommorrows first save in the next slot will be "7/6 1". And I just rotate thru the slots.

No, I never had problems in space with ODSs. I believe they are there to protect the planet's atmosphere that they are orbiting. They are not there to engage in space bound units. I take them out for roleplaying purposes. They are a red dot on my tacscan and must be eliminated! Dammit!
