According to testimony at Wednesday's hearing, however, NASA now wants to charge the science budget the full cost of a shuttle mission, which the space agency claims is approximately $1 billion. Such a price tag would eat up most if not all of the annual NASA science budget and for most scientists would be more than they would be willing to pay to keep Hubble operating. Hmmm, budget shenanigans. Initially Hubble cost $1.5 billion to build and put into orbit. Hubble's total budget in one year is in the range $230-250 million. That money does more than simply keep Hubble operating on a daily basis. In addition to operational costs, the total dollar figure includes funds for scientific data analysis, as well as for the development of future hardware and its associated software. The concept of servicing Hubble to upgrade its instruments rather than launching a whole new telescope has saved billions of dollars.

After paying $19.95 to file state (Still WAY better than $121 to H & R Block, and see how I was crowing about that in above posts ) I discovered that Alabama is also part of the Free File Alliance. If I had dug deeper to begin with I may have found the www.statetaxfreedom.com website. Too bad I was not qualified for free state filing but perhaps some of you are. Check it all out.

I'm a little earlier this year. Tip: Go to www.irs.gov and click free file. There is a list of many sites where you can file Federal taxes for free. The qualifications vary. They often charge for filing state taxes though. Prices vary. Also at irs.gov you can click on the various 1040 forms and get an exact copy of what the paper one would look like. You can fill this out if you choose and save a localized copy. Some licensing deal with adobe. A dialogue box pops up and explains it.

I bought Thief III. I installed it. But the obvious synchronization ( the blue doors to change regions/levels) to the xbox kinda jaded me. I never went past the first level. Well I got to the underground with the Pagans. That still is not very far into the game.

One would think that showing an interest in going to Mars would show an interest in space in general. If one has an interest in space in general one would want to save Hubble. One would think. James Webb telescope Edit: Oh, if they decommission Hubble there will be a gap of several years before James Webb goes up. As I said in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field thread what is the cost of something versus the price of not learning? Apologies all. Just my little soapbox.

There is still time to save it. I hope. I haven't researched the figures I have seen enough to really decide but it seems to me that if it takes 1.8 billion to decommission it and 2 billion to save it ... it should be a no brainer to save it. Grrrrr. I'm just disappointed. I thought we wanted to go to Mars.
