  1. Step 1: Read all the GBS documentation that comes with the zip file.Step 2: Print the following files: glob_ag.scr - Optional glob_ai.scr - Optional glob_dyn.scr - Optional glob_rg.scr - Optional glob_ai.scr - Optional navdata.scr - Optional objclass.scr - Optional objects.scr - Optional static.scr - Optional acm1tod1.scr - Good for Reference acm1tod2.scr - Good for Reference acm1tod3.scr - Good for Reference acm1tod4.scr - Good for Reference navlink.txt - Optional regions.txt - Optional tradeitm.txt - Good for Reference bc3k0000.scr (FF Scenerio) - Good for Reference bc3k0100.scr (ACM Scenario) - Good for Reference bc3k0200.scr (FF Scenario - Insurgent) - Good for Reference bc3k0300.scr (FF Scenario - Trader) - Good for Reference bc3k0400.scr (FF Scenario - Raider) - Good for Reference bc3k9900.scr (Xtreme Carnage script) - Good for Reference xc_ag.scr - Good for Reference but Optional xc_rg.scr - Good for Reference but OptionalStep 3: Repeat Step 1 Step 4: Develope an outline for the campaign the you wish to script. It does not need to be detailed or exact, just a rough draft of what/how you expect the campaign to unfold. Know the region where the mission takes place. Refer to the NavChart data. Think about how long the mission should last, time before Start, End, and Next Mission.Step 5: Repeat Step 1 Step 6: Download and print the GBS Design Docs if you haven't done so already. Step 7: Repeat Step 1 Read the GBS Design Docs Look at the various acm*.scr docs as you peruse the GBS and GBS design docs. You should start to see/understand how the ACM scripts work.Step 8: Try your hand at scripting. I suggest that the first be something simple; create a cargo pod with some stores (radine, plutonium, iridium, etc.) in a nearby region after starting a new game and launching from Galcom HQ. Repeat Step 7 Fix any event errors in your script Play test your scriptIn my next post I will point out some of the simple but fatal errors I made in my first couple of go-arounds with GBS TTFN [This message has been edited by Gallion (edited 10-08-2000).]
  2. Welcome back JB TTFN
  3. Game Builder System (GBS) available for download on the BC Download page is a somewhat simple yet difficult endeavour to master. Through out the course of my current project, to script an ACM from the Insurgent point of view, I have made several simple errors that caused script erors when I ran prepare and other in game snafus (events either not firing or misfiring). So I thought that I would pass on what I have learned and how I fixed them. Stay tuned kids , scripting with GBS is not as daunting or as intimidating as I first believed. 5. hehehehe, no comment Project going well, even with one minor dyslexsic (sp?) episode. Failed to change one character after a copy/paste (ya, I am lazy but what is tech for if not used). Had two mission resolve at sametime. Talk about attention to detail easy to find and fix. And yes kids, this is covered in the docs, just remember to check, check, and recheck ye scripts before prepare parse is run. I caught a couple of other minor event errors fixing my first one. Hell of a way to learn though, baptism by fire Sorry fer the buggy files Rattler, I got overzealous some TTFN
  6. [rp] 07:40 hrs, 15th May, 3008 Docking Bay 13 GALCOM HQ Gunney York paced nervously amongst the decks of the docked GCV Graf Spee. Repairs were underway, some major, a plethora of minor, to get the luckless Galactan Class MkII Battlcruiser fit for battle. The Gammulan War had inflicted heavy loses to Galcom needed they any capship that they could get their hands on. With the exception of the Graf Spee's Commander, the entire crew was confined to the ship. Most were busy assisting or making repairs; even the Graf Spee's Marine contingent was pressed into service. The Commander of the Graf Spee was somewhere within the cavernous bowels of titanium, power conduits, and passageways that were the Headquarters of Galactic Command. Held in pre-trial and pre-board of inquiry confinement on charges of treason, collaborating with the enemy, conduct unbecoming an officer, and disrespect to a superior officer; just to name a few of the lesser charges. To the old veteran, the prospect of Commander Gallion getting out of this pickle was next to none. Suddenly his PDA chimed in, indicating that he had received an urgent message. quote:TO: Eternal Warrior Am I not Christopher Sly? Well, well see't. Come, sit by my side and let the world slip: we shall ne'er be younger, Thou art a fool Pixan: For if Echo were as fleet, I would esteem him worth a dozen such. But sup them well and look unto them all: To-days and one, I intend to hunt again. SLY Ay, it stands so that I may hardly tarry so long. But I would be loath to fall into my dreams again: I will therefore tarry in despite of the flesh and the blood. York nearly dropped his PA as read the first few lines of the incoming message. The old marine suddenly had several flash backs from long ago and not so long ago. He shuddered at the implications but at the same time knew what the implications would/could be. The Gunney regained his composure and continued on with the rest of the message. quote:[Enter a Messenger] Messenger Your honour's players, heating your amendment, Are come to play a pleasant comedy; For so your doctors hold it very meet, Seeing too much sadness hath congeal'd your blood, And melancholy is the nurse of frenzy: Therefore they thought it good you hear a play And frame your mind to mirth and merriment, Which bars a thousand harms and lengthens life. Well, well see't. Come, sit by my side and let the world slip: we shall ne'er be younger.  Reality is for those that cant handle drugs or the harshness of life. The only thing Gunney wanted was a nice long pull of lager bier but he didnt have time for thatyet that is. Gunney York watch as the incoming message scrambled, and then disappeared from his PDA. He had plans to make and mission to accomplish. For the first time since arriving at Galcom HQ, the Gunney moved with a purpose. His first stop was with the Chief, after that he didnt know, as he made his was aft to Engineering. 7. To have office at Fleet HQ equates to spending some time there in. Not good for Corsair Wing Though I may create a front company to establish a bar or other entertainment. Mayhaps a bordello or tow TTFN BTW - Dreada be careful with that office space. Grapevine has it that the rent will increase after three months of occupancy. Be sure to read the extra, extra, extra fine print of the lease on ye PDA. ;p [This message has been edited by Gallion (edited 10-06-2000).]

  10. SpacePhish: start 120000 near earthz^jmp-01 1500 jmp-02 Translates to: START 120000[ms] NEAR earthz^jmp-01 1500 (Distance From) jmp-02. Using an azimuth from earthz^jmp-01 TO jmp-02. IOW nothing will happen unto 120000 milliseconds after START of mission/scenario. SC: Thanks! Me questions and prayers are answered! As to whether or not to include GBSII in BCM release, I suggest that you strongly consider including GBSII either when BCM goes GOLD or shortly there after. Documentation is a bugger I realize but required. No need to dumb-down documentation if you keep same standard that was used to publish initial GBS(I) text. The reason I suggest to include GBSII with BCM is replayability. BCM play will be predominately M/P in nature once a player masters BCM's aspects and whatnot in single player mode (IOW learns how BCM works, etc.). Many other games support M/P but only towards the deathmatch mode (Klingon Academy for example) without any player generated campaign or script support/capability (Klingon Academy is a fine example of this). Many good to great S/P games fail in the M/P arena because of this IMO. Those games that do support player M/P scripting or modification (UT, QA, etc.) tend to be more successful in both the marketplace and after intial hype wears-off. IOW the game is no longer boring. Anyway, me ramble is complete now. Thanks again SC fer the documentation and to Rattler for your kind words of encouragement. I need to study some before diving back into my project. More news when fit to print. TTFN [This message has been edited by Gallion (edited 10-04-2000).]
  11. I am working on an Insurgent spin on the current ACM. Basically, I am taloring the current ACM for BC3K v2.09 and combining it with the Insurgent FF mode. I have Read available GBS (Lite) documentation and perused the GBS forum and I understand 50% of the scripting techniques. Which means I knows enough to be very, very, very dangerous quote:...Any half-baked entry level programmer, even without all the docs, can figure it out. It does not need a GUI. It is based on simple logic and all you have to know are 3 things... 1. The game galaxy layout 2. The syntax of the commands and what they do 3. The logic flow of the environment and being certain to take into account that AI entities, that you don't script, are guaranteed to screw up the logic flow of your script if you don't know what you are doing. Very True - I figured it out somewhat and I am not a programmer, I figured out WTF .ghq is all about Question: When using START in the [ai] block, what does this mean: start 120000 near earthz^jmp-01 1500 jmp-02 I get errors when running parse - GBS TOC 6.0 START/STOP 'nav' commands - @date|time|inactive How is 120000 translated? I understand all but that portion. Has this thread been locked down? I tried to create a new topic and received access denied, yet I can post/create in other Forum areasI realize that crunch time cometh but I gots to ask (though I sorta know what the answer will be) - any chance on getting a sneak peak or any more of the GBS Manual (pg 50 and beyond) or at least Section 6.0 thru section 7.1? This is a serious project for me and not a frivolous endeavour. I have already created an ACM where the player starts a game as an Insurgent and eceives a mission. One forum member has playtested it already. TTFN BTW - from what little I know and understand about GBS, a GUI interface is an exercise in futility IMO. 14. do ye has the CD in the CD-ROM drive...? has ye setup ye sound at the dos prompt? i.e. in MSDOS window => C:bc3000adsetup.exe select digital and midi sound devices. has ye RTFM, FAQ, Troubleshooting, and Version Control files? directx 7.x is not supported by BC3K what type of video card are running? You trying to run BC3K3dFx or regular software mode - BC3K? needs more info before assitance can commence. TTFN
  15. Bang away at the Spacestation ye wishes to acquire. Once armor is down to around 300ish change thesetting of ye IOD to 10% and turn ye PTAs off. Fire ye IOD one shot at a time until armor drops real low and the INT is at 25 or below. THe Station should turn grey and start emitting its SOS Beacon. Dock as ye would any friendly spacestation and press Y when the siren begins and Capture station Y/N? starts a flashing on ye bridgeviewer. When ye launch from the station it will be yours. 18. Found it at local wish store - didn't strike me fancy. Not fer the $49 they be a wantin' fer it. after reading this I shant be dropping a penny towards procurement. Maybe, just maybe when it hits the bargain bin. TTFN [This message has been edited by Gallion (edited 10-01-2000).]
  19. The geocities server works Tac. Now make a decision as to where ye are gonna have the Fleet website and leave it there. Geocities popup is not as annoying as other website hosting servers. Look into Crosswinds for hosting the Fleet website. Servers are reliable and no popup ads either. Though their ftp methods leave much to be desired at times. 23. Yep, even old timers can learn a thing or two. I knows the basics of economics - buy low sell high but ye have clarified theBC3K economy fer me Rico - Tx TTFN BTW - The Deflector Arrays have the best profitto cargo unit ratio IMO.
  24. This was fixed in either v2.02 or v2.03 patch. Though by habit I still do not use Slot 0 (the very first player profile), mostly by habit - some are hard to break I am running the same version as you are Tyrn and do not experience the same symptom(s) as ye does. Even when I purposesly use PLayer profile Slot 0. The fix - dont use Slot 0 and check fer patches to ye OS (fer winblows users). For those using pther mices (logitech, etc...) update ye driver. Good luck TTFN
