Are those mods server side only or does the client need to download and install them first? If so, whats the best CoD4 portal to grab them from? I know there are a few sites out there, but I'd rather not do the search. How many of you here play it? I can probably throw up a server, since I'm on a 3G backbone at home and have a spare machine I use specifically for gaming servers.

As long as the server meets or exceeds the games recommended requirements for multiplayer and has at least 1GB of memory, you should be able to run two console instances. My guess is that the stability is due to the fact that the UCCONFIG.INI file was not correctly tweaked for use on the server. But I can provide a tweaked version of that INI file once I know what you guys want to do.

I can donate a free digital distribution copy of any game you guys want to run on Rip's server. Just let me know what game you guys want and I'll make a download available for it. In fact, I can donate a free server copy to anyone hosting a server for use by fleets and such. Also, what are the specs for Rip's server? It may be able to host the console version of any two games.

I have yet to try multiplayer because I don't want to get addicted to it. Can you tell me a bit more about the mp experience? I've heard nothing but good things about it.

No. The DVD-ROM and Direct2Drive digital distribution version use Sony's SecuRom. The BMT Micro UCSE-to-UCCE upgrade and the Digital River distribution versions use Software Passport. Like several devs/pubs, we no longer use Starforce for our games.

If you don't already own this game, BUY IT. If you have a choice (i.e. beefy PC vs console), get the PC version. I started playing it over the holidays and I'm just speechless at the level of quality and polish that Infinity Ward put into this game. Its games like this and Bioshock that pave the way. As I play this game, it just asserts what myself and many others have said before: Halo 3 is just a rehash that sold based on hype & marketing alone. It simply cannot touch CoD4 in any way, shape or form. Yes, different games sure, but I'm talking in terms of hype, marketing and sales. It would be interesting to see how well it does in the long run. EVERY fps fan needs to buy this game. Playing this game at 1920x1080 (on my 42" Westinghouse) with everything on high and my 5.1 audio (I have my X-Fi audio piped in DTS to my Onkyo TXSR603X reciever using the Creative Labs Home Theater Connect DTS-610) is just plain awesome. Yesterday I was so engrossed in the game that well into the night I was still playing. After I got yelled at (around 9pm) to keep the volume down, I wipped out my Razer Barracuda headphones and continued for about a half hour before swapping those for my Pioneer SE-DIR800C 5.1 headphones. I was up until 2am thereafter.

It seems to me that anyone with half a brain would figure out that if you turn ON an option which is OFF by default, and it causes problems, that you should go back and turn it OFF. Also, having 2GB of RAM is meaningless, since any number of things (e.g. some people have the habit of messing with their virtual memory settings in Windows, rather than letting the OS handle it) could cause the problem. That optimization setting only saves load times. And those load times are largely non-existent on higher spec machines. FYI, that attitude doesn't pass muster around here and will only get you banned. Makes no difference to me whatsoever; just don't brink that crap to this board. There are other gaming boards on the Net where you can post anything you like. This is not one of them. My guess is that your next post is likely to get you banned; so I'll just ban you now anyway and save myself (and the mods) the trouble. Goodbye. Stupid kids. Only the DVD-ROM version has a CD-KEY, so you can safely ignore this requirement.

Since its OFF by default because it will cause issues on some low resource machines. So its not a point of turning it off as a temp solution; just leave it off.

I forgot to also mention that as of the .03.02 patch, the console multiplayer server version in UCCE can run on HW+SW that does not need to meet the requirements for running the game e.g. it will run on Windows Server 2003 R2 with an on-board and non-compliant (i.e. non-PS 2.0 spec) graphics chipset. Due to the architectural and engine versions, that code cannot be backported to the previous games.

hehe Anyway, yesterday I removed my Intercooler from XB360. Luckily there were no burn marks of any signs of damage to the console. I think I'll just buy a small fridge from Walmart, plug it behind the console and leave the door open. Either that or just buy a small external fan and plug it back there.

He has some good ideas about pairing people with compat versions. As for multiplayer, this is how the games are paired. Remember that all clients should be running the same version as the server. BCMG (not sure why anyone would still be playing this) UC + UCG UCAWA UCSE + UCCE The incompatible aspects of these games is mostly down to content and multiplayer layer. e.g. the multiplayer layer, as well as the content in all of the above games are different. But those [paired] games run the same version of the multiplayer script. In fact, UCAWA + UCSE + UCCE can all play on the same multiplayer server as far as the mp script is concerned. The only problem would be in terms of the server version because e.g. the UCCE server running the latest build, will not allow UCAWA or UCSE clients to connect since they are at a different version build. I am not releasing BCMG and UC for free anytime soon (maybe around the end of 2008), but UCG is only $9.95 fer crissakes and its system requirements are the lowest of all the three later games. Even UCAWA has low system requirements, a much improved multiplayer layer than UC+UCG and is only $20. So, you guys standardizing on a single game for your fleet purposes, should be a no-brainer. I would suggest either UCG or UCAWA due to their lower sys requirements. In fact, one of the reasons I stopped hosting official servers is because you folks couldn't get your acts in gear to actually use them. Why pay for something if its not going to be used. I still have the servers, but they're going to be hosting GALCOM games instead.

Whoa!!! I didn't know this about the Nyko coolers melting!!! Holy smokes!!! I need to go inspect mine right now! I also have mine plugged into an APC surge protector. Guess I'm gonna have to go disconnect that as well. I have so many consoles that even if my unit RRODs, I won't miss it.

The RROD is usually caused by overheating. If you didn't use it, then I don't know why else you'd get that. You should have done what everyone else did when we first learned of this RROD rubbish: buy a dedicated cooling unit for it. I have a Nyko Intercooler attached to my Elite and so far so good. When you get your machine back, it will most definitely have a new heat sink + fan combo, but unless you take active steps to keep it cool, you will run into the problem again. A LOT of people are now on their third and fourth repaired units, so most suspect that this problem goes beyond cooling. MS is mum about the actual cause.

Since I travel frequently, someone sent me this video. Just unbelievable I'm a class one germophobe, so this video didn't wind me up since I never -ever- drink from hotel room glasses. Period.

Oh, I also got for myself a set of Pioneer SE-DIR800C 5.1 headphones. I have yet to hook it up, but apparently it got good reviews and as far as I can tell, is still the only wireless 5.1 headphones available. Until now, I'd been using a pair of Razer Barracuda HP-1 headphones for late night gaming and a pair of Sennheiser PC-150 headphones for late night movie watching. Never liked the wires at all. I can't wait to try these out when I hook them up later this weekend.

Merry Christmas everyone!! Kinda late to the party So, what did you all get? I got a Bose 3.2.1 GS, which I promptly installed in the master bedroom since I already have a 5.1 in the family room and a 7.1 in my media/gaming room. Let me tell you, everything you read about this 3.2.1 is 100% correct. For the longest time I hardly ever watch ANYTHING but the news and the radio in the bedroom due to the rubbish audio when compared to the family and media room. The missus doesn't care much for anything audio/related, so the less-than-stellar sounds coming from the Sharp 37" LCD TV (connected to a low profile Sony DVD player as well as a Hauppage MediaMVP unit) speakers in the BR, was just fine for her. ...until I installed the Bose. Oh boy, now she loves it. The Bose unit was easy to setup and connect to the TV and DirecTV receiver. In under ten minutes, the room was thundering. We have a pretty large BR, so the audio experience has taken it to all new heights. Of course with the Bose unit, the DVD player was deprecated and now I have the DTV unit, Hauppage MediaMVP and TV all connected to this single unit. Its heaven I tell ya, HEAVEN!! Now I can even watch my recorded shows (located on my HTPC in the media room) via the MVP unit with MUCH better audio than before. Bliss!!! Oh yeah, I got a ton of other stuff that I'm not that exited about: they include clothes, books, books, more books, DVDs and the like. What I really wanted was a pony; but the Bose 3.2.1 filled in just fine.

It looks like rubbish. Summer 2008? Its going to die - horribly - against the likes of HellBoy II, The Dark Knight et al. I smell another Wild Wild West epic disaster.
