Commanders, Have you noticed how stupid your own crew is when you start out? A marine with an AI of 12 is only good for a couple of things....Cannon Fodder....and moving everything to one side in cargo bay 1, mopping the deck, then moving everything again and mopping the other side. You can usually include Resnig in this equation too. ROTFLMAO So, we've all seen the antics of low AI. Did you expect any difference with the really smart cookies? IE: During beta testing, I was running a trade route between GalCom HQ and the Science Station out in Pluto orbit, in a SC. The CC was parked safely on the western coast of Africa with halt orders. (To prevent the low AI crew from trying something on their own..and they will) Everything is going swell for about six trips, trading Deflector Arrays, then I started hauling OTS weapons. I had just dropped out of hyperspace and started my approach to the Pluto jumpgate when three, count 'em, THREE Stormcarriers with the usual support compliment of heavy and light cruisers, decloaked off the port bow. Apparently they didn't care a great deal about me running guns to a science station that was sitting in a region with a jump anomaly to another system. I said: "Someone set us up the bomb." They didn't say: "You have no chance. Make your time." The fireball was Stu-pid-ness. The look on my face ----> My AI AI'nt up to snuff either. Space is a dangerous place. Expect the unexpected. MUUHHAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

The next step will be home gaming systems that include hydraulics and 360 degree view monitors. True simulators. At present, cost is the only blocking factor. I can cite the current equipment that is being used by the U.S. Army to train M1 tank drivers. The sensory effect is so realistic that many recruits become ill while operating them. I found it a real hoot watching an instructor send the Joes through the "Over The Cliff" scenario. BAAARF! One has to admit that there is no substitute for being plastered against the plexiglass in a 7g turn.

The military is better suited for single people. Stay home and raise your kids $ilk. FWIW: Recruiters are lifetime members of the Liars Club, so don't let their BS fool you. All the ads that are run on TV depict the military as an exciting place to be. Again, don't let it fool you. See above comment regarding Recruiters. In reality, the military consists of a great deal of dull, boring, and tedious hard work, no ifs, ands, or buts. Long hours and low pay for the enlisted personnel do not make it the most attractive choice of careers. As for your beliefs, you're entitled to them. Even in the military. United States military personnel are not expected to blindly follow the orders of their commanders. If even one soldier feels that his orders go against morality, then the soldier can't be faulted for refusing to follow it. Quite the contrary as a matter of fact. Any soldier who blindly follows an immoral order will be just as liable as the commander who issued it. Be warned my friend, you will face hardships unlike any you are accustomed to, and if you aren't prepared to kill other human beings, by all means stay home with your family.

Paddy, A couple of in game tweaks that may help you.... Try: 1. Turning off dynamic stars effects. 2. Turning off Hyper Jump Effects My rig has plenty of muscle, but it still bogs down in large skirmishes and planetside. That's running 1024x768 with everything maxed out. Turning those settings off improves the FPS, and IMHO seems a little more realistic. Deep, dark space.

Not a bad review all in all. I still get the feeling that many of the reviewers have only skimmed the surface.

I especially enjoyed his dig regarding the graphics "swimming", etc. etc. Get some better equipment, Scott.

For those players having the CTD issue... It's a very good possibility that your problem is hardware related, ie: Bad memory chip, overheating, etc. Try running the game with the cover off your rig. If that doesn't work, put a fan on it. There are utilities on the web that you can use to check the condition of your hardware. The problem could also be caused by what is known as an aging OS. Windows tends to start breaking down after months of intense use. I generally wipe my drive and reload the OS at least once every six months. WARNING Don't go wiping your drive for a reload unless you absolutely, positively know what you are doing. Bottom line... Get to know your PC inside and out. Oh, I almost forgot... If you have AOL installed, then you deserve every problem you ever encounter. They should rename their program "Gremlins 'R' Us" [ 12-13-2001: Message edited by: Wolferz ]

The noobs appear to be quite intelligent so it won't be long before they're up to speed with the rest of us since this type of game generally attracts the more cerebral denizens of our planet. In fact, I'm surprised at the relatively low number of noobs launched out the tube strapped to a Bugnor. And you guys thought the airlock was bad...

$ilk enlisted? Kewl Me? 1987-1996 U.S Army Reserve. 1987 was the year I turned 33. Boot camp was a blast. Imagine if you will, a 128 pound, 33 year old man with premature grey hair, in boot camp with a bunch of young pups. Average ages were 18 to 23. "They called me Dad." Bastards! Funny thing though, I remember a couple of 8 mile marches with full packs and combat gear where 202 pups were looking at Dad's ass the whole way. Number 203 was the guide-on bearer, and he was warned not to let me pass him, under penalty of answering to 4 Drills who had their hands full making the slackers keep up in the back of the column. Nice Death Run for those guys. I think I hurt a few of them. One guy in my platoon was never right in the legs after that. I digress. Served six years in the reserves on good ol' Fort Knox, which included support duty during Operation Desert Storm. Our parent unit was sent but S-3 decided it would take too long to get us ready, so we stayed behind. Reserve units always have plenty of openings, and we were no exception. This is usually caused by kids joining the reserves then going active duty soon after boot camp. The young'uns did a lot of growing up in boot. When conducting Drone Recovery, just zoom to the planet/moon, tilt your view and spin around. You will see where the drones are and can click on them to zoom in. Set a WP and grab 'em.
